What's Wrong with Earth's Magnetic Field?

Strange things are happening in space but the cause is right below our feet. The earth's core is changing and the magnetic poles could possibly flip in the not too distant future.
We are just discovering a whole new hidden weather system in the earth molten core that has direct effects on the magnetic field which in turn will have a major effect on our future technological development. But all is not lost, we can work our way out of this but time is of the essence because we don't know just when things are going to get tricky

Paul, I wish more documentaries were like yours. The two traits I enjoy most about your documentaries are the complete lack of artificial drama that has become the norm in other documentaries, and the information density you offer us. Instead of stretching out a little information to cover the time allotted by the other programs, you give your viewers several many times the information density in a shorter time period. Like so many others, I am so totally sickened by all the pumped up artificial drama that other documentary producers feel they have to work into their programs, even to the point that I am mostly turned off by most of what's available to us, the viewers! Your videos are like a much-needed breeze of fresh air clearing out all of that unnecessary and unwanted drama. The science and information provides enough of that already. Thank you so very much for this!
@MervynPartin

To Edward Cabaniss- I totally agree with your comments here. The BBC "Horizon" program is a case in point- its science content could be delivered in 5 minutes, but the producers are more interested in fancy graphics and weird noises to to fill an hour slot.
@BlackKnight344
@BlackKnight344 5 жыл бұрын
In the case of Horizon, I would say the dramatisation is only fairly recent. This I would say, is in partial response to the 'documentaries' on Discovery and the like, which have a tendency to repeat/summarize the 'content' including over dramatisation and melodramatics) already communicated every 15 mins or so, just in case the viewer, has by some miracle, forgotten what exactly was being discussed before the adverts. :P
@MervynPartin
@MervynPartin 5 жыл бұрын
To BlackKnight344- I completely agree. As you say, the dramatisation is recent. At one time, Horizon was actually a good science program, but the BBC is no longer what I would call a quality broadcaster. Take the News format as an example:- 1: This what you are going to see, 2: A quarter hour of padded out "news" item with input from "the community" who live somewhere in the area, 3: This what you have just seen in case you forgot, 4: What you are going to see coming up, 5: A couple of news items, 6: Our main story again just in case you had forgotten it yet again! In other words, half an hour of drivel with little actual content.

@@rswpt Well, thanks for your kindness. It's appreciated. Got a story for you. 1980 my freshman fall semester. Dr. Van Allen announces to class that Voyager 1 is flying by Saturn. The university of Iowa had a plasma wave detector on board oversaw by Dr. Donald Gurnett, one of Dr. Van Allen's students and now a full professor. (Dr. Gurnett just retired this year BTW) That night we returned to the physics building to watch the closest approach live. It was a big deal, we were connected direct to NASA and it was being shown on two huge 25 inch color tvs. Line by agonizing line the pictures would form. I sat, in a full lecture hall, in the row behind and to the right of Dr. Van Allen. He was surrounded by his freshman students. The look of wonder, lit in the dim light of the lecture hall, was on the faces of the students. The look on Dr. Van Allen's face matched his students and he was smiling ear to ear. He could have been at the show instead of watching it from Iowa City. He chose the latter and watched it with a bunch of 18 year old kids.

How could "space" end?🤔 💣💨💥🤯💫 ¿How could it not?🤨 Why does earth rotate? Why only 1 side of the moon? Why S&M the same size? Why is there a hexagon on Saturn's north pole ? Where do oceans curve? How does a level flying aircraft (blimps included people) not gain altitude? Communication satellites 20,000 miles up? Gas & dust scattered &/or held together in a vacuum? Geostationary orbit? Stationary frame of reference? Space force? Maneuvering in a "vacuum"? Ice cØld° space with blazing hot sun? 93million miles away? 66thousand mph orbit? 1000mph axial spin? Then wtf generates gravity?? Why a molton "core"? Why no properly documented Antarctic (or polar)exploration? Why no civilian space travel? Why no lunar rover? Over a year on the ISS? Space suits? Space walks? China made it to the moon? How'd the water get to earth? Elliptical orbit & no evidence of it? Why wouldn't the Earth rotate below a circling aircraft? Why does the sky remain lit after the sun goes down?

I shuttered a little after he described the fate of that poor japanese satellite. Doubledeepfried problem is there isn't enough room in the space around our planet. It will eventually all settle back down in a few decades they hope. But thousands upon thousands of small debris is cruising around at an incredible speed. Translation is we are littering that area to almost unusability. Go humanity!

CausticBURN The problem or space junk is far overblown by the media and that overblown description is taken as fact be space deniers why think that satellites, and especially the ISS, can’t exist because if all that space junk. Let’s put it in perspective. It every piece if space junk were the size of a pickup truck and this’d pickup trucks were set down into an area of the earth the size if Texas and there is nothing else there, you would easily be able to travel the are without ever seeing one. But wait there’s more. Most junk consists of stuff not much bigger than a gas can. And it’s spread over an area more than twice the area of the earth. In three dimensions. Were gonna be ok.

Nowhere is it suggested that the disruption or even the flipping of the magnetic poles will result in our extinction. Afterall, the last time they flipped obviously didn't cause the extinction of our more primitive hominid ancestors. No, but getting live footage of the World Cup, for example, might be problematic.

What didn't appear to be discussed in this video or to be honest I have never heard explained anywhere is why the North and South poles are so cold. Is it because of the magnetic forces that cause the cooling or something else. I've seen this information on many respected scientific programmes and they also show many "candidate" positions which the recognized poles could switch to. Say the North Pole continues on down to the middle of North America, will those forces cause the surrounding area to become a mass of ice miles thick? Will the rotation of the planet stay the same or will it change to rotate around this new pole? and more importantly, will this shift in rotation occur over a decade or will it snap suddenly?

What we need to do is come together as a species and pool our resources and our expertise and start immediately designing and building a massive space ship or several big ones. We need to establish an out post or colony on the two nearest places that we can reach - the moon and mars. We need a backup plan and we need to have vast servers and libraries stationed there to transfer all our data and written knowledge. We have the technology to send a small army of droids to mars and start terraforming and preparing for our arrival in the next ten years. Or we can stick around until we get wiped out by Earthquakes, tornadoes, storms, tsunamis, climate change, pollution, disease, violent crime, mass coronal ejection, space junk and debris and not forgetting Polar magnetic reversal. Better to have a backup plan and not need it than to need a backup plan and not have one.

The relative coldness of the geographic poles has nothing to do with the location of the magnetic poles. There is no evidence that the lack of a magnetic field would have any short term (less than a million years) effect on the climate. Over the long term the magnetic field prevents massive loss of light elements from the atmosphere. The amount of angular momentum in the Earth's spin is stupendous. A dinosaur killer would make the planet "ring like a bell", but wouldn't change the rotation by a second per year. The power of the magnetic force is insignificant compared to this. The problem with the Earth's "magnetic shield" going away is that we lose that portion of our protection from the the Sun.

@@supa3ek it'll take much more than that to take us out. We already have the tech to mitigate such an event. The grid in my province is equipped to deal with solar flares after it was taken out for a few hours due to one in 2003. Communication lines are now using fiber optics rather than copper. A Carrington-level event would probably cause severe damage especially in unprepared countries, but not a society-ending event. The damage would be mostly to the energy transport infrastructure and especially transformers which are difficult to replace. There would be damaged equipment everywhere due to the pulse carried by the powerline. Unconnected equipment would be unaffected. Contrary to popular belief, small devices such as cellphones and laptops would be mostly unaffected (permanent damage is possible in the proper conditions) or just upset and requiring a restart. You'd need a really impressive EM pulse to destroy most small electronics and at this point I think we're having other kinds of problems, such as being vaporised by a plasma pulse. I actually did some research on it and did the math after an argument with my EM professor. I checked the flux required to destroy modern microcontrollers. It is physically possible to create such a flux over a large area, but the main source I could find was way too close to a nuclear detonation for comfort. An equivalent solar flare in magnitude (that cause similar EM flux on the ground) would make the EMP the least of our problems.

Electrical grids are indeed the most vurnerable to a huge CME, followed by satellites. And just because measures can be taken to counter it, doesn't mean those measures are actually taken... A Carrington event today would throw the world into darkness for weeks, months or even years in some areas, which is way longer then most nations have stores of food for... 3rd world countries would fare the best, as they don't rely on electricity as much as 1st world countries.

Nothing of consequence in relation to Global warming, this has all occurred before and we now have relatively accurate timings and can cross refer that to the geological and fossil record. The Cosmic Rays and radiation do not have high energy levels compared to Solar Luminance, however organic and electronic devices such as DNA will be damaged and electronic and electrical devices also. The Cosmic rays lead to increase in cloud cover which reflects sunlight at the same time as they increase reflection i.e greenhouse effect. What is not being addressed is the shift in rotational axis due to the alterations in mass distribution and the changes in crust shape due to rebound as the great ice sheets melt (observed and measured in Iceland and West Antarctica),. this axis shift is also altering the tectonic place stresses especially around the Equatorial bulge which is shifting along with the axis, increased activity around the Ring of fire etc etc. The interactions are most complex

For years I have suggested a sub-crust 'weather' caused by the Coriolis effect, only to be called a fool. Thank you for sharing that idea, at last someone sees what I mean. I had suggested a link between that and the hot-spots away from the ring of fire, such as the Hawaiian islands that I believe are sitting over a Coriolis-induced sub-crust system, with the associated convection. The plates drift, but the molten material continues to create pressure under the crust. Check-out google maps and look at the way the island chain has shifted over the millions of years.

I remember being a kid in the 1960's and reading the 'routine science books' of the 50's and 60's explaining the 3-rings or layers of the Earth's core...and thinking 'exactly how do they know what the core of the earth is structured like?' Keep in mind, all they really had was basic seismograph data then...and now, with the use of Sonar, Radar and other advanced 'viewfinding' (like MRI on a human body), the findings seem to almost validate all the old data. In the meantime, I finished a couple of bachelor degrees in chemistry and engineering, and went on to get a graduate degree in engineering - and have to call TOTAL B.S. on this perpetual '3-layer concept', being as they seem to now believe that the core either cooled twice-as-fast as they thought, or was twice as radioactively hot as first assumed (upwards of 800-ppm), claiming that the 'core cooled and solidified' earlier than thought... FYI...you CANNOT have 'pole-shift' if you have a 'solidified core'...no more than you can have a volcanic moon if it has a cooled-solid core... In truth, if it is ever admitted to, I would expect the Earth (and most other larger mineral-based planets) to be nothing more than 'mini-stars' with live, active nuclear reactions going on inside them, and that in fact, one of the main reasons that we live on a 'warm, living world' is because that some component of our actual 'warm Earth' is due to the planet being 'self-internally heating' based upon live, ongoing fusion reaction at the core'....

I find your comment very interesting. However we don't necessarily need Fusion, which in a planet as small as Earth would be very difficult to achieve given the relatively low pressures in the core. I think however, but this is also a common theory, that the core is kept active through radioactivity and fission. That would be a long term reactor to power the processes inside the earth's core.

We at best have theories about what is actually inside our planet past a few kilometers... there is absolutely evidence to suggest that most of researched geology seems to be fairly accurate with plate tectonics, sliding around on a layer of liquid magma which causes immense pressure and volcanic activity where over vast distances of time places that were once under ocean water become mountain ranges and vise versa. However, we simply cannot physically go down into the earth very far even with tools and technology that is the strongest materials able to withstand immense pressure & heat just simply fail after a certain depth... i cant remember exactly how far down the deepest hole we have drilled was but it was in russia and it was not even scratching the surface really. Trying to get down very far in water is even more difficult! There are some theories now that itvis entirely possible there could be a second ocean under the sea floor, meaning it could be an entire other layer... we really just don't know until some kind of technology is invented or learned that can essentially allow us to view a cross-section of a planet in super hi-definition as well as the elemental composition of everything within the planet so that there is no question of what we are looking at. Pretty sure the core of the earth is liquid iron or else how would we have a magnetic field protection?

@@javihache8066 Whatever fizzes, spreads. No, it rests on chemical and heat exchangers through convection cells and conduction. To fission the interior you would get an exponential spread or chain reaction that would create dire circumstances for most life forms.

Suddenly we have an answer to the question of "well if it isn't our under-arm deodorant then what ELSE could have caused that hole in the ozone layer?". We may have had thousands of ozone holes and just noticed this one because we looked at an opportune moment. And I have to then consider how this mini-sun surrounded by it's own weather patterns of molten magma might not also have an affect on our atmospheric weather as well. Curious Droid, you do EXACTLY what a great teacher does - you inspire questions based on facts. You are the hubris-killer.
