Great Video Robert. Scotland truly is an amazing place to live. So many scenic and historical locations to see and visit. As you have said you have probably done every test that can possibly be done with a drone above and beyond. Maybe do some stories of the locations with some of the history involved shown from land and air. There is a lot of forgotten Scotland out there and so many untold stories. With you having your wee army of drones you are in the position to incorporate scenic views into your stories that the public dont get the chance to see. Nice to see you managed not to scud that wee island in the middle of the river this time Robert

National Parks here in Australia it is illegal to fly a drone, no matter the size. The Blue Mountains National Park, for example, is 2,690 square kilometers in size! and that's only one national park.

I started flying drones 4 years ago and I did it because I always wanted to fly. I could not afford an airplane or lessons to fly it but the thought of soaring over the countryside was just a dream until the first drones came out. You live in a beautiful country and I remember one of your videos where you flew around a castle. Not a teaching video but just the fun of flying. Maybe all of your educational videos have worn away at the fun of flying. I have enjoyed your videos for quite a while now and wish to thank you for all you have done for the drone hobby.

Don't give up Robert. You'll get your passion back. I appreciate your videos more than you'll ever know. My grandpa was from Dalkeith, and Scotland - although I was born and raised in the U.S. - just feels like home. I'm not sure if I'll ever get back there again, because of some recent health issues. So, perhaps selfishly, I hope you stick with it. Oh, and from a Wallace lass, to your newest drone - welcome to the clan. ;-)

Great video Robert. Felt like a nice walk and conversation about your passions. Ironically it was clear that you do have a passion even if your enthusiasm has taken a rest. Maybe it's time to teach. Maybe time to go on a reality TV show. 😮. Or maybe time to not worry about doing something 'new' all the time. Nothing wrong with incremental changes. Your fans will stay with you because you're the star of the show. Lassie, Caledonia, Wallace and even Scotland are just supporting cast.

I really liked this video, and the drone shots at the end. I like these nice locations and the history of the area in a video. I haven’t uploaded a video on my hobby drone channel for over five months, I can’t face editing the flight videos I have saved, it’s like a writers block, I haven’t flown either of my drones for four months. I have avoided drone channels as well. I also look at the weather , and don’t feel like flying. I am running out of local locations to make video’s about. At some point I will feel like carrying on. I hope you carry on making video’s that you feel happy doing.👍 Many of your videos were inspirational to me. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Robert - I have felt the same things after owning and flying these marvels for about the same time you have. I think it is very healthy to take a pause and have a look back and ahead. Professors take ‘sabatticals’ to do the same thing, get in a change of pace, and “imagine forward.” Many of your friends have suggested more historic connections, and I think this would be a good way to build on what you’ve already done. I was thrilled to have your video of Knockdolian Castle, long ago in my grandmother’s lineage. More like that, especially with your enchanting style of storytelling, would be wonderful. Another branch of our family came from Bridge o’ Weir, and if you think that area is of interest to your many fans, It would be lovely to enjoy. In short, Rob, keep up your good work! You are very special to us US Scots!

I've been the same this winter haven't flown for months now I need to motivate myself to get back out and rekindle my enthusiasm, once I'm out I love it, it's just getting there. I think one of the problems is I've been flying for 4 years mainly in about 10 different sites so I feel I have all of the footage I could ever want in those places. To go to new locations therefore takes time and planning, driving over an hour and then unsure of any access problems when I get there. If you could take a drone tour around the UK it would be interesting, if you came down my way (Bristol/South Wales) I would love to show you my flying spots.

A very moving video, Robert, thankyou very much for sharing. At the age of 70 I'm just getting into droning since about 3 weeks ago. I can understand the waning of passion for something, as I've had many different hobbies, sports and passions over my lifetime. Most recently I seem to have lost interest in my passion of golf - a game which I've been playing an average of six days a week over the last five years. One pastime which has waxed and waned over the years has been photography - my first images were taken as an eight year old some 62 years ago. Back in the '70s I did a stint as a professional photographer in my own business. Photography has, however, been a recurring theme and I've managed to combine it with many of my other sports, hobbies and interests over the years. (Various evidence of that sprinkled in my KZbin videos.) In my case, I made the decision - about halfway through my life - to follow my enthusiasms. While I've never been accused of making much money (in fact my father told me when I was 20 that I seemed to be "living a champagne life on a beer allowance"), I've found that decision to have resulted in a very happy and satisfying life, so far... (as yet I don't know what I want to do when I grow up). Like you, I am privileged to live in a particularly beautiful part of the world. The lake I live next to presents many opportunities and challenges for an aging photographer with new tools. I'm just taking each day as it comes and enjoying my participation in it. If my passion for golf subsides for the moment it quickly gets replaced with something else. If anything, I've got too many interests! ['Droning on' is apparently one of them going by this comment]. All the best and I look forward to watching more of your excellent videos. Gregg

Thank you for such a great video! I've had the same feelings and you really expressed them quite well. I stumbled into drones through my kids and really got into it through my mapping business, but as I approached retirement I really wanted to go back to exploring my dear Colorado Rocky Mountains. That reignited my passion and FPV fueled it even a bit more. I still have a bit of that lack of passion but as Spring approaches I'm beginning to get that stirring feeling again to get out and explore again. At my age I can't climb to the same heights again, but with my drones I can still explore. I'm glad I found your page - Thank You!

Don't stop Robert! I live in the U.S. I got to visit Scotland in 2010. I saw as much as I could see in the 10 days we were there, but I know there was much more. I would love to go back, but that won't happen for awhile. So I must depend on your videos to hear and see Scotland. I have a suggestion. Take a road trip through your Country, a long road trip. Stop and film along the way and fly your drones as well. Talk to people and include these conversations in your videos. I guarantee it will bring passion back to your hobby.

So sorry to hear this Robert. I'm sure your passion will come back. I've been following you since I bought my Mini 2 (my first ever drone) in 2022. I've had times when the weather has been perfect and I've not known where to fly. You have some fantastic scenery in Scotland and it's good that the restrictions are very relaxed. I've always enjoyed your scenic ones, but also learned a lot from your tutorial and experimental videos - sometimes giving me the confidence to try things that I wouldn't have been brave enough to do had I not seen you trying it 👍☺. You're the reason I invested in both Maven & Litchi as well after watching your videos. I'm taking early retirement in three weeks time and really looking forward to getting out there and capturing some different aerial footage from further afield. We have a lot of great scenery in Yorkshire as well of course, but there's also lots of development taking place. My background is in engineering, so I do tend to gravitate towards interesting buildings, disused railways and industrial areas, potentially recording a bit of history before these landscapes change forever. I have captured different land features as well that you wouldn't be aware of from ground level. Please hang on in there and I'm sure you'll be back with a vengeance very soon. We all go through periods where our enthusiasm wanes, but it will return. Take care 🤗

Give FPV a go Robert... it'll open your eyes to a whole new perspective on drone flying. The DJI camera drones are a great way to position a camera in the sky but real FPV is like being superman and actually *flying* . Also, there's a whole new set of skills to learn. The new DJI Avata 2 should be out soon and that'd probably be a great option for you to start with (if you can afford it). Take a look at come cinematic (and other) FPV videos on KZbin and get a feel for what you could enjoy.
@WindsweptRobert
@WindsweptRobert 10 ай бұрын
I've had a DJI FPV for a couple of years and had some fun for a few months with it. But because of the different muscle memory required to fly Acro Vs the muscle memory to fly a GPS cinematic drone, it's untenable to fly both types on a regular basis.

Why not create a portfolio of all the castles, beaches and Lochs in Scotland using the fantastic Mavic 3s Hasselblad camera. Robert i feel the same, how strange is that? for me i think its because i have done pretty much everything with my mini 2 and now mini 3, there is only so many things we can do in life before we get "bored or burnout" were i live in Dorset i have flown all the scenic or interesting places over and over, i have flown in London too, but recently can't be bothered to fly even when the sun finally makes an appearance after all the bad weather we have had, I also fly fixed wing RC planes and lost the passion for that too! I think you need to try new things to make things exciting again, weather that is with drones or something else, sorry i can't help but this just my thoughts 🙏

I struggle to find the time myself Robert, but a retired friend of mine contacted me with a view to ask advice about which drone to purchase as a new hobby, I advised him to either get a 3 pro or a 4 pro, but a week or so later, a guy local to me was selling his 3 pro with 5 batteries and flight case etc, he accepted a £600 offer and now my friend has his drone, he’s just learning the fundamentals of flying it at the moment, he’s quite fortunate as he owns a small holding with fields where he can practice, but he’s either had visitors or has been dog sitting and not had much time to fly, so I went up with my mavic air 1 to give it an airing and we flew it around his place , he was absolutely smitten with it and says he likes it better than the mini, but is fully aware of the restrictions on the legacy drones. He is in awe at just how technologically brilliant they are.He says he’s concentrating on the flight controls at the moment and once proficient enough, will delve more into the camera side of things. I hope you get your mojo back, cheers Dan

Excellent video and the first of yours I have come across (sorry!) I love photography and video making. Not for KZbin but just because I can create something I find beautiful, that tells a story without having any artistic talent myself! A drone, for me, is just one element in that, giving perspectives few people can usually see. Combining that with ground shots, stills, ambient sounds, and music is what does it for me. You can evoke so many emotions in the viewer that way, but editing all that is an art too! A recent inspiration for me was the programme “Gone Fishing” with Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer. It was a master class of what I want to achieve visually and emotionally. I think we all find our own path and with your talent, screen presence and excellent narration skills,it won’t be long until you get your Mojo back! I look forward to seeing what you do next!

Hi Robert, it's been a while I landed on your channel, since I lost my passion for drones as well. I started my wee channel with drone tutorials and was super excited. But after having lost my last drone (Mini 2) I was so sick of it, I made the decision to never buy one again and every time a fellow traveller brings his drone with him, I feel some kind of resistance as if I'm trying very hard not to relive some memories. I have done almost everything I wanted to do with my drones and then I suddenly was fed up with it. I started focussing 100% on my other passion: Exploring rivers in a kayak or packraft. And even here in this niche, I have good days and bad days, but my love for rivers will always conquer my lack of inspiration. I really hope your passion will return, and I think it will eventually, and if it doesn't, you'll find something else to show us on this channel. It's not bad to make changes. Cheers Eckie🍻

Well, it seems I was not alone in this feeling, and I decided to do some historical videos incorporating the use of my drone instead of just flying my drone over a beautiful landscape. Adding a commentary with some sort of context to make it interesting. It does knock you back with all these drone regulations and leaves you feeling that is it all worth it? . The answer to that is yes, it does. Your knowledge of Scotland is amazing, and your ability to explain and describe is without question fantastic. So simply fly your drone and explain what your eye in the sky is capturing.. go for it Robert, you know you want too..! 😉

There is more to life than camera drones, they're probably the least interesting part of the entire RC hobby ... get a 5" quad and learn to fly it FPV with a set of goggles. An absolute game changer. Fly around "bandos" or interesting structures. Fly fixed wing aircraft using FPV goggles. Learn how to slope soar. Learn how to glide. Find thermals. There's tons to do. And many interesting videos to be made. And stay away from the "rules" discussions and arguments. Nothing kills the hobby more than fighting about stuff with random people online. Best of luck. (Sorry I removed my last comment, i felt like this one was more relevant).

This video highlights the very question that I have been asking myself recently, I have been on a similar path to yourself and have now not flown a drone for several months. I too live in the Scottish low lands, on the opposite coast to yourself, with abundant scenic areas on my doorstep yet cannot be bothered to go out and fly at present. I did pack a drone on a recent trip to Inverness and Fort Bill but did not even charge its battery, total lack of enthusiasm. I have been following the DJI path since the days of the Soark however recently my fleet has sat in a cupboard and been ignored, DJI did not help the situation, why have they not allowed the RC pro controller to operate the mini 4 pro or the Air 3, this has really annoyed me and prevented the purchase of either one of those drones. The CAA don’t help either with the ongoing uncertainty over regulations, I have been waiting for this to finalise since the Air 2 was released (April 2020) yet even now 4 years later we do not have clear guidance of the future requirements. I also believe several other KZbinrs are having similar thoughts as a lot of the drone channels I subscribe to are either not very active or are producing non drone content. I have always found from past experience that if you leave your Hobby alone the interest will come back however if you force yourself to fly you will extinguish that flame for ever. Personally I have returned to another long lost love of mine, motorcycles, and intend to cover many miles this year without a drone by my side, they will remain in the cupboard until the day I decide that I actually want to fly one again. Therefore my advice to you Robert is to try a completely different direction (old or new) for now and see how you feel about your drones in a few months time.

Right Robert, it sounds to me like a lot of the thrill with drones, and Lassie in particular, was simply seeing what they could do and learning to fly them. That's done now as your vid clearly explains. My two p worth is that you need to find another hobby that you can link flying the drone to. Not knowing you personally, well not that well at any rate 🙂 I can't say what that hobby might be, maybe night flying, maybe checking out dams, point to point racing, chasing pigeons, seeing how fast birds fly etc. What I do is nip over to Germany and flim Roman sites, especially the Limes towers that are deep in the woods and very difficult to get close to other than in the air. Perhaps, as another chap has said, some history linkage, Lord knows you have enough of that in Scotland, battlefields for instance. Either way, I've really enjoyed all your vids and hope you regain that passions soon.

Something similar happened to me but not with drones, it was with photography. (after 60+ years fishing, it previously had happened with that. Haven't said hello to a troot for years now.) It had ceased to be interesting because I'd topped out with learning. Then I started "shooting" flying birds purely because they're so difficult as targets. Demanding of skill but also of equipment. Getting suitable camera bodies and lenses over several years kept me on the hunt for what was needed, then seeking to get the best out of it, improving my learning and associated skills. I was progressing again, then I topped out again at that. Still there. 72 and feeling like I'm done. Various other age related moans & groans could be inserted here but why bother? I'll not feel any different. I feel i've run out of road to travel.... (But then I lack a braw young lass at home like you have.....) EDIT. Something I've not seen a lot of footage shot on is - low level stuff. scraping walls close enough so the camera can see surface textures in detail. Varied speeds. skimming water almost like the view a swallow might get when its lower mandible cuts the surface in getting a drink. Flying at 45 degree angles to surfaces of usually natural sorts, lichens on rock faces, scree slopes in ancient glaciated glens... In short getting up close and personal with landscape features of every sort - that's not bending rules so you get your collar felt by some of those cops who now aren't going to be investigating 24,000 reported crimes any more. Maybe that's a misquote, canny mind the exact words now... Or - take a sabbatical. Do something different, away from drones. But keep making unscripted talking videos, it's your strength. I doubt you'd lose many of your followers if you did. Research a place, find a story, go there, tell the story. (maybe a couple of minutes droning to augment the story? There's a Perth comedian does that sort of thing but he concentrates on history. Just a late breaking thought. Personally, I now find it takes much effort to just leave the house. For ANY reason. Be glad you ain't there, lad.

Thanks for your comment, Sir Beau - a lot to ponder. I think I've come up with a 'new' and interesting style of video. I'll be testing out a few to see if my viewers enjoy them as well and if so, I'll do more. My 'lass' has been telling me for years to do more 'story' type of videos, so with your suggestion here and her 'nagging', I think I'll do some of that too. We (me and the Wee Yin) are working on a story atm about the Hurricane that crashed into the hills at Loch Doon :)

I live not a million miles from you and agree that Loch Doon is a beautiful place from top to bottom. As you say there's a need sometimes to get away from filming scenery. You have a passion for your area so how about creatively filming some of the local ruined houses and castles and even giving us a bit of the history that goes with them. There are quite a few and they are easy to find on the ordnance survey maps. I know how you feel though because I've lost my interest too since I lost the mini 3 pro in trees in the wilds of the Galloway forest. I replaced it with Care Refresh and haven't taken it up since I received it. I even went back to the forest 10 days later to look for the old one and found it using What 3 Words. Two drones and no interest in flying them again. It's a sair fecht @Windswept Robert

I think we are all the same, and it’s quite simple really. When we do anything on our own, it’s very solitary. Our hobbies that do not involve other people can be, and are lonely. Without question the biggest drone channel would be Ken Heron. Most of his videos involve other people. His Thursday night live most definitely does. Perhaps if you could form a small drone collective in Scotland, you would encourage one another and share ideas. You could also have meet ups where you could experience a far wider range of drones. How many of us have a mini 2, mini 3 or avata? Probably most of us . How many would have a Phantom, Air 2s or Mavic ? Far fewer… 😊 To be in a group where you can try, hands on flying a different drone, now that would be fantastic. This would make the hobby, less of a solo experience and a chore. Just a thought Robert, because you are not alone in feeling that the novelty of flying your drone is wearing off. John

Robert, As you said there are many great ideas. You could do "Scotland by Air" videos all day because it truly is a beautiful place. You could travel to far off distant lands and video. I can't tell you what you need to do to rekindle the passion... but I can tell you what I did.. First off, I got into Drones for the love of flying and not the ability to take great shots. My videos and pictures have always been secondary to me. Being up there and soaring with a hawk, (Or a buzzard since we have a lot of those big buggers here), anyway just enjoying a viewpoint that very few people have ever seen or going over a place Ive never seen before does it for me. We are both a bit gray on the top so this isn't the advice of a youngster. I guess what Im trying to say is to just go out for your self. Go for the thrill of the flight and damn'd be the video. Do what makes you happy and do what you enjoy in the sky. If others like it that's great but the only way to have true passion is to go to places and do things that make you happy. So what did I do when I started feeling like that? I flew for me.

"INSPIRATION" It's probably the hardest thing to find as a artist or musician, Photographer or even a KZbinr. Beating yourself up is also very easy to do Tae. My advice is to stop trying so hard. Stop having so many mental conversations in your head and just accept that today or tomorrow I might still have none. But the following week when ave rested there may or may not be loads of inspiration 😊

I enjoy all your videos and understand what you are sharing today. For myself, I am only interested in owning one drone at a time, so I sold my Mini 2 and will buy the Mini 4 Pro. My usage is different. I simply incorporate appropriate drone videoss into my adventure travels across the world. As an idea, what about setting up a competitive system where viewers can submit videos in the categories you select for non-monetary awards. You could set up a panel of judges. Any thoughts from anyone? Roger Canada

Robert you are right drone video's have been done to death by the various KZbinrs and they are sooooo boring. If I see another ND filter related video I'll scream. But have you thought just making videos for yourself and not KZbin. If you want to do KZbin videos then use the drone to simply add scenic footage to a more broader topic. For example you could provide videos on the history, scenery, interesting stories etc. about these please. That's far more interesting that seeing how long a drone can fly for. By the way I have hardly used my Mini 3 Pro for a year, but when I have it's good fun and still amazes me.

Looks like you've got some of our landscape in the Lakes, mate. Very much like that. Look, I got bored with it a lot quicker than you've done, so, to reinvigorate my drone photography vids, I've decided to add my ambient guitar music compositions to more avant-garde shots. Instead of just basic scenery, I'm planning on some really weird shots with multiple drones of different capabilities. DJI FPV, mini 3 pro and Avata 2 etc, when it lands, (pun slightly intended ;). A real festival of flight from differing perspectives. Let's see if that makes me happy again. More work, but real artistic films. That's the plan, anyway. Love your stuff...always have. Mix it up a bit and try things you wouldn't normally. Try the ideas you think are rubbish. We'll be the judge, and, we'll tell you if your new offerings are just plain shit!
