Idols have always been popular. Celebrities around the world have always been a thing. Idols used to be somebody that you wanted to look up to, though. People used to ask kids, who is your hero? Who inspires you? Now kids answer back with answers like Lady Gaga, RuPaul, beyoncé.... You don't really hear athlete's names. You don't hear scientists names. You don't hear names of people you would really hope your kids aspire to be. And that's because people let their kids watch whatever they want to

The thing is though, Oli London doesnt give a shit about Jimin, the actual person or artist, he barely even knows anything about him. He's just obsessed with the look with his I think a form of body dysmorphia and any attention he's getting. To people who have seen his shenanigans for these ~4-5 years it's obvious that he doesn't care about BTS as artists or people, it's just a facade to be the cringiest koreaboo ever and get attention, because any attention is good for him. I think BTS fans have mostly learned to ignore him completely, because he's recently mentioned some other groups to kind of see what sticks, I guess. I guess my point is: He doesn't even glorify or put Jimin on a pedestal, it's just a vague tool for his disturbed mind.

ooh something that might be useful to your essay might be that woman on tiktok who photoshopped celebrities to show how she would improve their faces. Super fucked up, I can't remember where I saw it, I think it was maybe a Kurtis Conner podcast. If you search "plastic surgeon tiktok natalia" it will bring up articles. i just had a look at her tiktok and found this one. khloe kardashian does NOT look like the picture on the right, it's photoshop and lighting! she edits her photos to death so she is very obviously still very insecure and self-conscious still, despite god knows how many cosmetic procedures from the most expensive and best surgeons available. Using her to say cosmetic surgery will make you happy is so fucked when not even khloe looks like khloe, and clearly nor is she happy with her appearance considering how vastly different she makes herself and her body look in photos! EDIT: i can't include the link, but she's np.miranda on tiktok and the tiktok includes a "before" photo of Khloe and an "after" pic - the one that went viral where she looked like a completely different person with the caption "Therapy is not enough... all the people who said money can't buy happiness need to admit they were wrong". Unsurprisingly, her comments are turned off. This particular tiktok was posted 29/6 if you're looking for it. EDIT 2: One more edit, her edit of Natalia Dyer to "improve" her looks doesn't even look better afterwards. It looks much worse.

When you have facial surgery it can take up to a year for your face to settle into its new shape. The first several weeks are the worst because of the swelling. From what I can tell, Oli never leaves any recovery time to see the proper outcome of any of these facial surgeries. They also had no idea what the jaw surgery was going to entail, so something tells me their surgeons are not bothering to have a conversation with them before the procedures (or they are and instead of a brain Oli’s head is full of butterflies).

Yeah, even the styling in their video just feel like a bad and almost racist parody. That's the definition of exploiting a culture for monetary gain. That's what a lot of Japan obsessed people do too. Or any culture tbh. My theory is that it stems from capitalism packaging cultures in neat little boxes filled with a country's superficial cultural traits and stereotypes and selling it like a product to ppl, and we buy it (tourism industry is built on it). It's a palatable, low effort way of consuming ones culture for escapism and self-exoticism. These sort of ppl aren't interested in learning the language because they aren't interested in talking to actual ppl from the country, that's too hard and might reveal some unsavoury realities about the country they've been idolizing. They only want to enjoy superficial fuss-free version of a culture in a very detached anti-social way.

Its because in the end there is no legal and safe surgical procedure that can allow the doctors to actually manhandle your face to look the exact way you want. Its not just skin, fat distribution and cartiladge. Your face shape lies literally in the bones. They can shave a bit like in Oli's jaw, but thats where it ends. All they can do is play with your skin a bit like Play doh, but i'm the end all the tissue will try to fit the face again. Your real face, the skull. They can't shape people like marble figures. Theres nerve endings, proper blood access and other things that need to be done correctly. So theres only the same safe techniques the doctors know, and all those people end up looking identical. Its more affordable to just get therapy and learn to like your own face, because nobody will ever achieve the doppelgänger look theyre going for via surgery

It’s important to acknowledge that someone is problematic while also having empathy for them, as a lot of people on the internet seem to forget that not everyone is 100% good or bad. yea the body dysmorphia and whatever other mental problems is causing this is def real, they're just playing it up even more for the attention (and money) I'm not sure how genuine the racist stuff they say/do is or how much of it is to purposefully gain negative attention but its pretty bad to do regardless of why. this is kinda tin foil hat of me but i kinda wonder if they're actually trying to look like jimin with these procedures or they just keep saying that to continue garnering attention and money to support their plastic surgery addiction, bc a lot of the stuff they've had done really doesn't make sense as an attempt to look like jimin or look Korean, the overfilled lips and shrunken nose that comes to a tiny tip doesn't look like any (even exaggerated) typical Korean features, it just looks like a typical person with a plastic surgery addiction. like I've seen pics of white ppl who had surgery to look asian and regardless of how good/convincing or bad it looked it was obvious they were trying to look asian, like getting their eyelids made into monolids and their eye shape changed to a more almond one, or getting their nose to look more flat, etc edit: nvm i watched more of the vid lmao

This person absolutely baffles me. I have had my own obsessions in the past when I was a teen, and I did little things to try and be more like them, like getting the same model of guitar as a musician I looked up to or watching the same films that my idols had PUBLICALLY said that they loved. I even dyed my hair blue because I loved Cluster-era Awsten Knight so much when I was 15 or 16. But there's a line and whereas I never got close enough to that line to even see it, Oli is so far past it on the obsessive side that even John Hinckley is giving them weird looks.

Not knowing this person prior to your dissection of their life I was wondering, since money doesn't seem to be an issue to them, why didn't they just put roots in Korea, enjoying the culture and building their life there. But what I seem to have gathered about this individual is that they don't really care about the culture itself, they were obsessed by an idol they worshipped and wanted to become him, but ended up entangled in their own nonsensical actions to fulfill a growing sense of emptiness this parasocial relationship left them with. Maybe investing in a psychologist would've been a nice and cheaper way to cope.
