Most Oilers fans knew that this year wasn’t going to be the year. Are we disappointed that they got swept by the Jets? Absolutely even though it was four really close games and essentially all one goal games if you exclude the empty netters, either way, incredibly disappointed and definitely should not have been swept but this summer and the summer after are when all of Chia’s bad contracts come off the books so Holland will actually have cap space to work with. Now what he does with that cap space is a completely different discussion but the window in theory should open up next year. Surround Mcdavid, Draisaitl and Nurse with actual talent and we’ll see where it goes. And to those saying Edmonton goaltending was suspect, Smith played well consistently the whole year. Goaltending was never an issue when he was in net, it’s insane that they take a narrative from the past and apply it to Smith this season when it’s not accurate whatsoever if you watched him play this year. Oilers getting swept was due to depth and coaching, the coach didn’t trust 1/4 of the lineup. Nurse played 60 something minutes in a 100 minute game? That’s depth issues and idiotic coaching.

I have never been a Nurse fan; felt he's irresponsible with taking penalties and leaving the net front, but this year he was often the guy doing the right thing and it was his partner who left him high and dry. Now was he awesome defensively no, but considering his offense, his first pass and his ability to carry the puck he doesn't need to be Adam Foote on defence and he wasn't. He was good to sub-good and for his game that reasonable. I like Barrie, but I always felt Nurse needs a better more defensive pairing that gives him more opportunity to jump into and drive more of the play.

Lots of really good players never win cups. The demise of many teams have been the big contracts players sign when they win cups. The demise in Edmonton was giving the big contracts out with-out winning. They lost to the Jets. At best with a little more depth they could win a series or two. Teams win when they role 4 lines.
@mhales9186
@mhales9186 3 жыл бұрын
If you look at the Oilers, the only 2 "big" contracts they gave out were to Draisaitl and McDavid. Leon at 8 milliion a year is a bargain and McDavid, though at 12.5 a year is more than manageable. Their problems are Chiarelli left a huge mess when he left and Holland has done nothing to even help clean it up. He said you can't go all in every year, but , until he learns how to massage the salary cap, that team will be mediocre. Say what you want about Kyle Dubas, the Leafs went into game one of the playoffs with a team salary of 86.5 million in a year with a 81.5 cap. Also, getting quality free agents to play in Edmonton is more difficult and you have to overpay. Your mistakes become larger when there's a cap involved. Plus, if your goaltending wasn't good enough last year, why would you run the same two out this year?
@coryjohn4057

It's a two man team. Shut down those two and the team falls of drastically. Solidify the top six by giving your two superstars some support. Then, fill up your bottom six with solid depth guys that know how to be defensively responsible. You shouldn't have to rely on two guys playing almost 30 minutes a night just to have a chance at winning. The d-core is decent I guess, not really an emergency. Focus on the rest and come back to this if you have some remaining cap space. Solidify the goal tending so that you don't have to over rely on a 40 year old to save you every night. At this point in his career, Smith should be the perfect back-up to another goal tender. Instead, he's the guy the Oilers have to put in net or else they'll get blown out. Their success depends on two guys, they need team depth and they also need to support those two guys. TL;DR; Built an actual NHL caliber team around your two superstars.

We as sports fans need to look at Connor Mcdavid. To be clear, am a life long Oilers fan. Our captain is arguably the greatest offensive player to ever put skates on, but his defence… he is so bad defensively that in the box score and when it comes to out scoring the other team, he is not much better than a strong two-way 50 point scorer. He, and to be fare Leon too, float in the neutral zone in transition on defence I can only assume hoping for a turnover and an odd main rush the other way. Then skate with one hand on their stick seemingly not trying like they have no motivation to play the defensive side of the puck. And it would be nice if Mcdavid got at least serviceable at the face off dot. The team is putting far too mush money in these guys pockets to not at least get okay defence from them.

If I’m Oilers GM I’m seriously thinking about trading McDavid and Drai… I’m not gonna pretend to try and spell that name, Leon. The amount of cap they eat up puts the in the same situation as Toronto. You can’t really rely on free agent signings and trade because you don’t have the cap for it, or at least it’s very difficult to do so. The best way to supplement players of that sort of cap hit is through the farm system where you can get players on cheap entry level deals. The big question is, do the Oilers have a good enough development system to do that? If the answer is no, those superstars probably need to go. You’ll get multiple good players and 1st round picks from them, and if you draft well you can easily build the team around them.

Simple. You'll never win a Cup with only two players. McDavid and Draisaitl cover up a ton of problems the Oilers have and they have for years now. People continually call the Oilers a contender despite them never fixing their problems, and I don't understand why. They have the same problems they always had. Why has no one clued in that they aren't fixed.

They're not in a "terrible" cap situation next year. They currently have $22.16M in cap space next year. If they dump at least 1 of Koskinen or Neal, they can get to at least $26.66M. RNH will be no more than $8M on the open market, so that leaves with like $18.66M with 7 roster spots to fill. Trade for Khudobin and they have $15.33M in space. Larsson/Barrie will cost $10M, at the most, that gets them $5.33M with 4 spots to fill. Then sign guys like Barclay Goodrow and/or Blake Coleman to fill out the Bottom 6 and sign Yamamoto to a bridge deal. Dumping Neal as well will give them enough space to add another Middle 6 guy.

People talk about EDMs 22M next year. They have 14 FAs to figure out. Let's talk Nuge. He's a 6M player. They sign him at the same price, suddenly that 22M goes to 16M and the 14 FAs go down to 13. It's not at all an enviable position and I don't think Ken Holland has the managerial chops or group around him to figure it out.

Look at that draft history especially outside the first round in the last 15 years. Far too much failure there. Mike Smith kept them in that game. Give the Jets credit, they understood the importance of drafting well, they rebuilt their scouting and development departments the right way and that playoff series showed the hockey world how important it is to be able to draft and develop well.
