Jaguar IPace is a beautiful all electric SUV with a 200 mile range that apparently not many people want and I don't understand why. InsideEV's Tom Moloughney is here to shed some light on this phenomenon in his weekly segment "Plugged-in with Tom Moloughney"

My wife just read a book about when trains where being first introduced into the Western World. Detractors were saying they would easily explode and kill people, that it was unhealthy for the human body to travel at 40 mph, that chickens would stop laying and cows stop giving milk if located near train tracks, etc., etc. Sound familiar? The book ends with the ceremony at a town celebrating it's first train service, and many people came to jeer and taunt. But when they saw the train, and saw it operate, they were amazed, and suddenly they were all for it. Electric cars are coming.

@@81chrisling Well that's a fair assessment. There tends to be quite a difference between the European & American sense of aesthetics. The European aesthetic sensibility also applies to Australasia. For example, Jaguars are often offered as prizes in raffle tickets, competitions etc. If nothing else, when you get into a Jag the sense of luxury & build quality is immediately apparent. My uncle had one & it was beautiful - inside and out.

I agree with the arguments presented in this excellent video. I am an I Pace owner and really love the car. One drive would help many people decide. Reasons for slower sales in my opinion are: most people know nothing about them as there is little effort to advertise or educate, fear of Jaguar reliability issues, though electric cars have far fewer parts to fail, initial software issues with the first models (lag, black screens) which have been solved, limits with public fast chargers (EVgo, Greenlots, Electrify America etc.) which include charging numbers and reliability, all improving, but not anywhere close to Tesla network. If EVs are to succeed, everyone will need to be all in. Build the fast charging networks and they will come.

Gilles Pelletier I think differently. I drive a Porsche now, and a Model 3 is on its way. I do not drive fast 99,99% of the time, but a fast car is nice in traffic. If you need to change lanes but the traffic next to you does not allow it, give a little bit of gas (electrons), pass the traffic and change lanes. Easy.

Billy Can - Drove the i-Pace an thought it was nice, but what is a turn-off is the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ nose bleed price, and doesn’t have the cool autopilot features, nor the range. 240 miles is paltry and compared to the 240 mile Tesla is twice the price. So, they need to lower the cost to $40,000 grand and they would stand a chance.

This is for Bill 2. 7 million ev sales world wide compared to 50ish thousand a few years ago I’d call that a change or a new trend maybe not trendy Tesla is selling 100000 a month up 130% year over year everyone wants a ev just not everyone knows it yet Rivian and Ford are going to cement that and auto company’s will turn a much larger profit because the won’t lose so much in warranty work hence auto prices will eventually go lower I do believe who would have guessed people would talk about electric vehicles via the internet on tablets

This is for Matt. In 2018, U.S. sales of PHEV/EV's combined were only ~2% of all car sales as Americans snubbed EV's. 98% of car buyers still preferred buying an ICEV for it's convenience and complete feature-set, to serve as their principal vehicle for transportation. Tesla had LESS than 1% of the market in 2018. Auto industry analysts forecast that 2019 will be much of the same, with EV's only getting 2% market share in the U.S. as tax-incentives dry up; and according to the latest numbers for EV sales through July, they seem to be correct. Likewise for Tesla sales figures through July, they also seem to be on track to only snag another 1% of the market share for 2019. EV's just aren't "there" yet for the vast majority of consumers.

💯 A Tesla isn’t an EV in the same way an touch operated BlackBerry wasn’t an iPhone. Tesla has redefined what a car is: electric and very, very smart. Traditional automakers appear to believe that “It’s just like a regular car, but electric” is an advantage. Just like BlackBerry thought those silly little keys were so important to people.

I have had my I pace for 1 month now and driven 3500km.(2200m). Every km has been just wonderful and I don't think I'll lose that feeling for a long while if ever. I have kept one of the trip meter going since I got the car and my overall consumption has been 22.7kwhr/100km or approximately 370km (231m) It would be possible to go further but it isn't easy to hold back.. It doesn't want to go slow. (or is that me) The GOM has surprised me with how accurate it is. After driving return trip of 260km into Sydney and back the GOM showed 120km so I decided to go to a charger 70km away. The trip was up a 500 meter steep grade and a gradual rise of 200 metres after that. Never having depleted the battery to this level before, I was a bit worried, however, we arrived with 11% left and the GOM showed 37km.

What’s wrong? One word: range. I test-drove it. Nice car. Good looking. Don’t know if they are going to offer OTA updates. Regardless, driving any electric vehicle with only a 200 mile range (worse in the winter) is like driving a car that has half a gas tank and takes hours to fill up. Shame. Nice car. But they missed the bullseye rather significantly by not designing it to go over 300 miles.

I own an I Pace. It has covered just over 10,000 miles with zero faults and it’s a great car. Early battery software wasn’t great, but current software gives 250-270 miles to a charge and there is a software range update coming too. Before I ordered the I Pace I test drove a Model X and thought it was OK, but the Jaguar is in a different class in terms of build quality. Jaguar will build many more electric cars and they will improve their electric technology, but Tesla has to improve its car manufacturing which is a much bigger challenge. JLR makes its profit on expensive luxury cars, sales of which have plummeted in China, a market where they are unlikely to sell electric vehicles. They have no high volume small car inertia which manufacturers need to balance their cash flow and lead customers to more expensive products. The I Pace will become a classic in the long term, but it will take time. Give Jaguar some kudos for producing a brilliant car and see what they do next.

I own both. IPace HSE (black with white interior) top of the line, $70K (discounted $85 list 0% APR) and Model 3 standard range plus with (also black with white interior) and a few options for $45K. I have far more toys on the Jag (heated/cooled) leather seats with a billion way adjustments, Heads up display, Carplay and Android Auto -- I really like that, even a heated windshield -- why, I don't know. Both cars have Auto Pilot (Teslas is better in that it can "find" the lane much quicker (around 3 seconds versus 10+ seconds), but once the lane is found, they are both about the same. Tesla interior is very inferior to the Jag. It better be for the price difference. The Jag is faster, the Model 3 would beat it on 0-60 if I got the performance variant, but that would raise the price to $60K. Right now the Tesla network (in the US) is better but that's changing fast with Electrify America building out and others. It's like the early days between iPhone and Android so I don't the network as a plus or minus. Range on the IPace is 220 summer (90+ degrees every day) 240 spring/fall. The model 3 is around the same. The Model 3 is a great car, the Jag is more of a competitor to the Model X/S, although the IPace is more or a CUV. It's not advertised much at all in the US, and a Jag is viewed as uber expensive and not looked at by most consumers. The dealers suck as they don't know the car, the finance guy tried to sell me extended service (free oil changes!) LOL. I told them that you should take one of the IPaces and add it to the loaner fleet. I think if people actually drove it they would be very pleasantly surprised. I found the Model 3 interior cheap and bland but the exterior is nice and it's fun to drive. Model 3 build quality is nowhere as bad as you may hear (it's fine actually -- 0 issues). The seats are cheap plastic foam (you have to give up something when you get that much of a high tech electric car for $45K). The IPace's software was awful when it first came out, the latest fixed nearly all of the bugs. IPace has 3 screens compared to 1. I prefer the the heads up 3 screens combo to the 1 large screen. As for charging, the IPace can handle 100 and the Tesla 125 (I think). Here's an odd thing. Because the battery is smaller on the Tesla, it starts to slow down much earlier, so to fully fast charge the cars the time difference isn't as much as you might think. In hindsight we should have opted for the long range on the Tesla. Alex -- I saw an IPace with a red leather seats/black interior with black Alcantara roof line and steering wheel, paired with 22" carbon fiber rims. OMG. Had I saw that before I would have gotten that one.

@John W Before we bought our 1st Tesla, we looked at the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf, tried to do a test drive BUT the salesmen convinced us it was a waste of our time then tried to steer us to other ICE vehicles in their inventory and on their lots. The lesson we learned is that ICE sales people don’t know how to sell or don’t care to sell EVs. Tesla is committed from the ground up in selling EVs. Tesla’s sales approach completely removes the dealerships (no 3rd party to up the manufacturer’s price) because they are confident their product sells itself. Jaguar may retrofit their factory in the future and promote that they are committed to the EV revolution but their efforts may be unsuccessful or long in coming unless they get each dealerships’ sales team member behind this commitment. The same goes for every ICE manufacturer jumping on the EV revolution. EV start-ups from China may have a better chance of success as being the “Tesla Killer” because they are committed from the ground up to meeting or raising the EV bar that Tesla has set since no time has been wasted on the ICE paradigm of the past. The Chinese government would rather see the Chinese populace (of 1.4 billion with the largest adult population in the world) buy a Chinese designed and built EV rather than a Tesla even though a Tesla factory in China is due to open later this year.

Not sure what that is but there seems to be an issue. At that price point with the extra 15k tacked on … I can afford anything in the market. Jag has lost their way.

I live in America, in the middle bit, Iowa. The local Jag dealer near responded to my enquiry about the i-Pace, and still don't appear to have any on the lot. There are quite a few Tesla S and 3s in town, soooo...it's not like people aren't interested in EVs, just that the dealer isn't really interested in selling any.

In April 1 in 8 of Jaguars sold globally was the IPace. Tesla is an american brand, its appeal in America, a country where "Make America Great Again" and Trump was voted for President is as much a cultural icon as it is a car. Trying to compare sales of European EV's to Tesla in the US is fruitless and meaningless Alex.

Maybe 30k off and then it will be more attractive

Yeah plain and simple, the i-Pace costs too much. I really enjoyed my test drive experience in the i-Pace as did my fiancee but the HSE models they had at the dealership were nearly $25k more than our model 3. We don't need two long-range EVs, but we are unwilling to pay that sort of premium for less car overall. Our performance Model Y w/FSD (at reveal event pricing) is $15K less than the HSE i-Pace we drove. We will just wait. The JLR group have come up with a much better offering than the VW camp but the price is just too high, perhaps they really don't want to seel them =(

They could have these cars be featured in a movie or series of movies, like Fast and Furious or some horror movie franchise. Many people like the cars featured in movies like Fast and Furious because of the fast and reckless driving the stars do in them. A horror movie would be a great product placement for electric cars because they are so silent and the characters would not need a traditional key to enter the vehicles when fleeing the villain. They could then do these test drive events at the beginning and end of the premieres of the movie(s) all over the world. The stars would have the opportunities to promote them and everyone at the event would be able to drive the vehicles they see in the movie and know why the company paid to have them in the movie. Such events would be so much fun and way better freebie than a laptop bag giveaway. They could make it so that attendees would not need to run their credit to take a test drive in the vehicles. It would also allow movie theaters to become destinations to get people out and to the movies.

Just noted Tom's comment comparing size of ipace to model 3. I pace is massively wider and turning circle horrendous. I pace is wider than 6 foot 6. Google width is wrong. Jlr web site show it correeclty. Also turning circle is almost 12m. Model S is 11.4m. In the UK the I pace is possibly too wide for some parking spaces and width restrictions and minor roads.

The IPace is a wide car, and is 6" wider than a Model 3. (79" compared to 73"). This discussion is primarily focused on US sales, and in the US, the width is much less of a concern compared to Europe. But, point taken.

Only fanatics are buying electric cars and they are all Elon zombies. Just look at the comments on every thread on EVs. They can't even paint the Model 3 properly and the zombies keep cheering. Having said this, the I pace and E tron are too expensive for their ranges. Both are stuck between the high end Model S and everything else. This thing is 25k CAD more than the Model 3. That's a hard sell.

No mention of adaptive cruise control or FSD options in the future. Over the air updates? Jaguar charge network in the works? I don’t think anyone can catch up with TESLA. Electrify America is likely to raise charge rates to better profit margins with zero blow back from customers because they are not tied to a specific manufacturer.

Tom, you rock as usual. You know your (EV) stuff. Alex, for 50K you can get a Model 3 Performance now. It will blow away the iPace. Try taking a long CA road trip in the iPace versus a Tesla and you will know why Tesla rules. I drive a Spark EV and Bolt so I'm familiar with DC fast charging. I will get a used Model 3 in a few years when they are cheap when the Y is out.

You remember how naysayers used to say they couldn’t be successful without scale, right? Guess what? They’re achieving it... Why you you insist “nobody” wants them? The people who can afford to spend what an Ipace costs and want an EV will probably choose a Tesla first since Tesla really doesn't have to 'sell' them. The people who Jaguar probably want (and need) to sell to will need the typical "ICE type" advertising, which Jaguar, GM or most ICE makers do not do. They ICE companies don't spend millions advertising their EVs because they couldn't make enough of them if national TV ads were pushing the cars, so then people would be upset. It's the same reason GM doesn't advertise Corvettes on television; only a select few will ever be able to run out and afford one.

That silly comment about blip in sales is the worst of FUB. Almost as bad as the prviousnclip I saw from this channel of a guest telling us not to buy a Laef or any electric car because an owner had trouble with a repair and the owner was constantly on FB looking for a mechanic.
