This is a clip from the second season of "Touched By An Angel", the episode titled "In The Name of God". The Angels have a confrontation with someone who turns out to be Satan. Tess makes a statement to Satan that you will find might be a bit ironic, but when you think about it, it does make sense.

According to Jeremiah, mankind is capable of sin that even God didn't think mankind was capable of. One of the basic beliefs of Christianity is Free Will, which could not exist if God knew every action we would take before we took it.

"I thought he'd be more scary. You know, horns?" Nowhere in the Bible (as far as I'm aware) does it say Satan has cloven hoof and horns. That idea comes from misinterpretations of satyrs from Roman mythology as well as various ancient and modern cultures' depictions of the horned/antlered god of nature. I say this as an open-minded Christian with several pagan/Wiccan friends. "Sam, how about a mocha latte for the road?" Best ending ever. "We just defeated Satan. Let's celebrate with mocha lattes!" Tess is right. God does love Satan or he wouldn’t send him and all the other fallen angels and unrepentant people to Hell, because that is what they deserve and he is a JUST God. He gave Satan a home in Heaven and made him the greatest of the angels and most importantly he gave him a FREE WILL too. If there was no free will, we wouldn’t know the difference between good and evil; instead we would just be a group of robots going through the motions. Free will is a gift because it shows that God desires a true relationship with his creation. He doesn’t want us to love and obey him because we HAVE to but because we WANT to.

Ok I figured out right away "what was wrong." Tess said God loved the Devil. Ok, not a theological concept we think about a lot. And how do we the handle both truths that Satan is pure evil but Satan is also God's creation? Understanding God and his world is wonderful and obviously something we thrive for as we build a connection with him. And one day may we so blessed to be given such complete knowledge. Until then is it so hard to say, it might just be good to leave our theology open for debate while making our mission a closed discussion: That above all God is not just good but Goodness itself. That God is the Truth with a capital T, and that God is Love personified. Can't we be united by the shared wonder we have for the God of Creation? Can't we meet at the table to discuss matters of dogma and ritual but stop in reverence as we see a stranger in need. And can we no longer be called upon to be our bother's keeper despite differences? Can we, the believers, not see a greater fight the Church body should be fighting? When will the Body stand simply to say that above all else: God is Good.
