Yes!! The PURSE Test! I'm 43 and every single item in my purse goes in its exact spot. It has lots of interior pockets. I can reach blindly into my purse and get right to an item. What blew my mind was that my grandma, who lives an hour away, also bought the same purse and independently my Mom asked where I found it so she could buy one! Three generations all excited by the same detail in our purses!!

Well that cleared everything up. I am officially a confused organiser. Sometimes detailed, sometimes not. Sometimes hidden, sometimes not. I think what I mostly am is pragmatic and efficient. The tea towels won't fit in the drawer if I don't fold them, and it's very satisfying to see them all neat and tidy. I don't care about the undies....no one else sees them. Not even I see them! I pull them out of the drawer in the dark of the early morning, so why would I bother folding them?

I'm pretty much 50-50. It's so hard for me to find out my organizing style. I'm a ladybug, but I have my doubts about it sometimes, as I am quite visual in some instances. For example, I always make piles on my desk, but I crave visual simplicity. I prefer hooks. My handbag is a disaster, but I do take the time to fold my underwear and dish towels....I am some kind of weird bug somewhere in between, lol.

@@cynthiaajmurray1827 I am also a bit all over the place. I crave a decent amount of simplicity, but I do like some things on display; I get super uncomfortable if it looks too empty. What I have found is, instead of limiting myself to one style, I use the one that accomplish what I want in specific areas. :) For example my clutter piles, I use the ladybug strategy of 'shove and hide', but only until I can deal with it. Once dealt with, I prefer a neat, semi hidden systems, that still have easy access if I need something. And I want it to look neat and tidy inside the drawer. For everyday beauty products, I put most of them in a drawer with super easy access, but leave out one or two. I was sure I was a cricket, but I think I am actually leaning slightly more towards bee. Because it would bother me a lot more to not fold the towels/undies/reciets, and to not screw the lid on properly. And though I HATE open cabinets and cluttered surfaces, I think I would go more crazy in a super empty environment, than a slightly cluttered environment. So maybe to figure out yours, find out which one would bother you most to not do? :)

I'm definitely non-detailed (ADHD, ENFP, Ravenclaw butterfly here!) but what I found most interesting in this video was recognizing the handful of areas in which I identified more with the detailed option. And THEN realizing that for the most part, I adopted the detailed habits to make my detailed husband happy. For instance, I couldn't care less about having my underwear folded - but I always told his, exactly the way he likes it done. (And you can always tell when it was his turn doing the laundry, because suddenly my underwear drawer looks organized!)

I could have written this word for word! I’ve implemented more systems than I thought to find a balance. I can take the time to be detailed on things that make me happy or that make my husband happy. My underwear drawer has boxes to partition types of underwear so I don’t have to fold but it contains to make life easier, but his are folded because that makes him happy. The pantry has containers for broad categories that I just throw in, but the school snacks container is detailed because that’s how my daughter likes it. Our main sticking point in this house is visual vs hidden. I want everything behind doors. My husband and kids do not.

Same - leaving the bread bag unsealed makes the bread dry out, so all it does is waste food, because one little bump and the nice "twist and tuck" comes undone, and poof! your bread's dried out; leaving the cereal unsealed/unrolled makes it go stale (and can make for a big mess the next time you open it, since it lets it get out of the bag and be between the bag and the box), so wasted food, again; same with the ketchup and toothpaste - it wastes it if you aren't meticulous with how you squeeze it and put the cap back on. Not cleaning off the threads of peanut butter/jelly/applesauce/etc. jars if stuff gets in them makes it next to impossible to open them the next time. Tossing cords makes them get tangled and they become a giant mess, not to mention just tossing stuff in makes things take up far more space. And I actually like to be able to enjoy my desktop background, thank you very much, so I, too, can't imagine why anyone wouldn't organize all their files into folders - I have zero unread emails in my inbox.

I've come to realize my husband and I both tend toward "bee" (detailed and visual). It's been great to see organizational systems that work for bees, but the biggest transformations in our home have come from embracing the opposite (ladybug). Less complicated, macro systems have been easier for us to maintain, and as visual people, I think we are greatly affected by our surroundings, so putting more things away means that what's left gets the attention it deserves. Than you, Cas!

Cords: I actually wrote on the vacuum "Do not wrap!" because my cleaning professional always wasted her time wrapping and I had to waste my time unwrapping. That fixed it.
@SnowySpiritRuby
@SnowySpiritRuby Жыл бұрын
That's why I love the vacuums where the top cord hook swivels (almost all the ones I've personally ever used, at least the upright vacuums, have been like that, even my parents' ancient Kirby) - unwrapping the cord takes about 2 seconds: rotate the top hook down, pull the cord off of it, and BOOM! cord all unwrapped. I, too, would hate having to unwrap the cord every time I needed to use a vacuum otherwise, because some of those cords are _really_ long. And the ones with retractable cords are just awesome - when I first moved into my house, the landlord had left a couple vacuums there for me to use, and the cord on one of them was retractable, but I had to really hunt and search for how on earth to wrap the cord the first time I used it because he left it with the cord just hanging around the handle, so there was no clear indication that it was retractable; as I was trying to figure it out how to wrap it, I eventually discovered that if I pressed a certain lever, the entire cord retracted in less than 5 seconds, but it won't retract unless that lever is pressed, so I never have to fight with it when I'm actually using it - on this particular one, if you pull the cord out, it stays pulled out to the length you pulled it, but you can also retract it from any length (i.e. you don't have to pull it all the way out in order to retract it).
@antiantipoda
@antiantipoda Жыл бұрын
@@SnowySpiritRuby I don't think I have ever seen a vacuum like that. I am in Brazil and things are a little different here. I wanted to buy a model that has a button to automatically wrap the cord inside the vacuum, but I got one online where there are little wings in the back where you are supposed to wrap and unwrap manually. They are very close together and are annoying.

Part of that may be socialization that "highly detailed" is organizing. Some might be mixed bag that just bc you do something doesn't mean that's your preference. You can try to optimize for those things by setting your space up to make that easy. Macro organizing with baskets/containers can also help ease visual clutter. Decluttering overall though will help the most to avoid overwhelm.

Have fun being a butterfly! I’m a butterfly as well, and it’s really nice to accept that it’s OK to have a lot of things out. The kitchen is also very unusual at the moment I suppose… For example I don’t have a silverware drawer. I have a silverware and glass jars or tall cups in a cute crate that’s on its side making a shelf… along with my salad oil and vinegar and salt and pepper. Things I use there regularly. Easy to get out and easy to put away.

¡Ayyyy, no!

As always, I come out somewhere in between on a test and I loathe things that say, "On a scale of 1 to whatever..." but I'm an extremely detail-oriented person whose hidden spaces tend to be incredibly neat, while every visible flat surface is a legit space to cover with random small items or stacks of paper and books. I was mostly detailed and a real mix of hidden and visible in answering the questions in this video. Too much stuff out is visual chaos and causes sensory overload but anything hidden is lost in a black hole and I am unlikely to remember its very existence. I do love Lisa Woodruff of Organize 365 and the Sunday Basket, so (while I may be writing stuff down on small, random index cards, post-it notes, and the backs of envelopes) all those small notes to self have a great place to go, where they can re-emerge each week until I need them. A *lot* of my success has been due to finding some kind of middle ground (say, between hidden or visual), making small changes, and reinforcing them on a regular basis.

I literally have boxes with papers that need sorting including small bits of envelopes with random notes on them. - a hidden organiser... except for important papers I need to tackle. - a cricket, always have been since I was a small child (I know you say it's unusual but there are some out there 🤩). It has always been a struggle because I love my drawers, wardrobes/closets, cupboards etc. extremely well organised but that means that everything doesn't fit... I swear I was already like that at 3-4 years old. But... I think I have also reached obliger rebellion so... it's a bit of an emotional and psychological hot mess 😂 - when it comes to love language, I think I'm open to almost all of them, in some shape or form. I feel that's quite significant... 😞 As always, I love your content Cas ❤ Sending you love all the way from France 😊 🤗

First off, that dress looks FANTASTIC on you. The color and style both suit you so well. I used to fold my underwear, because that's what I was taught growing up. Then I moved out, and one day I was doing it, and thinking to myself, "This would be so much less hassle and take so much less time if I didn't bother folding them." So I stopped. I have never had cause to regret that decision. As far as all the other things: I am definitely a non-detailed visual organizer. The only major exception is my emails. It gets mentally overwhelming for me to look at a jam-packed inbox. For stuff that rarely requires responses (i.e. advertising), I have filters set up to automatically shunt them to folders and skip the inbox altogether. For everything else, I use the Snooze function to send them to a day when I know I'll have the time to deal with them, and once dealt with, I delete them or tuck them away in a folder. (Oh, and unless it's documentation of something I KNOW is important, I do not let the "might need this someday" mentality take over - I delete anything I possibly can. I figure I can always ask someone for the information again, if needed.)

Thanks for your pragmatic thoughts about emails! My email folder is way up there! Although every once in a while I do spend an hour or so and delete certain categories or whatever. Also about the underwear folding. Am I just doing it because I’ve always done it and it’s the way you’re supposed to do it? I also put them in The drawer like Marie Kondo recommends, for the most part. Although I did have one time in the last few months I suppose when I actually just laid some undies into the drawer without folding them! And I didn’t die 😹

@@beccismith4454 Hey, you're welcome! I hope maybe those email tips help you out. They build up pretty fast, don't they? Honestly, I don't even remember how I got signed up for half of them. (Though I'm always willing to unsubscribe if I stop using a particular store or service. That helps a bit, too.) As far as the underwear, I mean, there's no "right" or "wrong" way to do it (or any organization task, for that matter). It's just a question of what works for you as an individual. If someone wants to roll, or fold, or tuck them into one of those latticework drawer organizers, more power to 'em! It just isn't a good idea for me, personally, because I have ADHD. If I view a task as complicated and/or time-consuming, I'll struggle to get started. Before my "epiphany" that folding was not necessarily a required step, the clean laundry would pile up. So I'm better off just dumping my underwear directly into the drawer from the clean clothes basket than mustering up the mental energy to set aside time to fold each particular one. After all, the important thing is that they're clean! 😆

In my defense, now that I'm not in a job where I was overloaded with stressful work, my cords are wrapped, my computer desktop is neatly organized, and my kitchen dishcloths and towels and underwear are all neatly folded. My paperwork is on it's way to being organized as my stressful years as a single mom of 4 is wearing off. Definitely a visual organizer, and I can't remember if I'm Ravenclaw or Slytherin . . . Thank you for your light-hearted channel and view point - they are a great help💖

I got 2 curious kittens 4 years ago. No leaving things out from then on! Given the opportunity, they lick the dirty dishes, tear open the groceries and eat them, chew on anything plastic, and make a toy of anything. Dishes get done and groceries get put away immediately. Soft plastic things, like tubes or spatulas, get put away or get destroyed. And cords definitely go in drawers as one of them loves to chew on them. I'm amazed she hasn't been electrocuted yet! They definitely boosted my natural tendencies to hide things away!

Well done! Random-ish thought, have y'all heard of ultradian rhythms? It's about our personal energy upside and downs. I heard about it on a KZbin video, noted the book's title (The 20 Minute Break: Using the New Science of Ultradian Rhythms by Earnest Lawrence Rossi). It goes with my self observations on matching tasks with my energy rhythms--I need high energy for my writing work and no energy for my Dirty Thirty, so I write in the high energy morning hours & do brainless, essential chores in my afternoon slump. I know this has little to do with today's topic, but by writing here I won't be lost in our similar approaches to email. I am a bee, Gyffendor, & ENFJ whose love language is quality time. Thanks for asking.🤟

This is so frustrating! My wife is STRONGLY nondetailed and I trend heavily to Detailed. It drives me crazy when she uses my toothpaste! Although, I have her mostly trained to squeeze from the bottom. :) We are both Visual though. Meaning I'm a bee and she is a butterfly. I want the cords neatly wrapped up, and she just shoves them into her bag. I'm on my first charging cable, she is on like number 25 because she keeps ruining them. The compromises we've had to make are astounding! :)

OK here goes! I think the fact that the first thing I did when you mentioned the seven things was to reach for a pen and notepad says a lot! 🤣 I always wrap my charging cords when I'm done. Same with my vacuum cord but it has a button to wrap it automatically. My towels (kitchen, bathroom, face) are all folded even the old ones that I use to dry off the washer door. Email folders...so many folders! Plus separate emails for different categories...main, medical, etc. Computer desktop doesn't have folders but the icons are all sectioned off on the left side. I have a planner but forget to use it. 😆 I have a lot of random brain dump and to do lists on many pieces of paper. Occasionally, I'll condense into one list. Kitchen food: bread gets the clip or twist tie every time. Cereal gets folded and a mini chip clip inside the box. All lids are put back on all the way. Toothpaste gets messy if I use the flip top so to prevent that I unscrew it to dispense. However, I do squeeze from the middle and my ketchup bottle top only gets wiped off if it's noticeably messy. My purse is organized and I can find things without looking. If there's any trash inside it is because I wasn't near a trash can and didn't wanna litter. My car has a tiny trash bag and there is never any food containers left in there. However, it is dusty and my windows need cleaned. My fridge is covered with magnets and Appt reminders. I have piles of papers but also a working filing system. Jacket gets tossed on the back of a kitchen chair by my purse/work bags. Shoes are in the bedroom but still in the box they came in for storage. Bathroom is a half and half situation... some things out and some outta sight. I'm a Butterfly/Bee, Ravenclaw, ISTJ or ISFJ, Obliger, and my love language is Acts Of Service. Oh, and Eneagram 9w1!

Close cupboard doors, pretty appliances out, cords wrapped, planner and paperwork out, toothbrush sometimes left out, shower curtain closed hide bottles and face clothes. Husband hides his mess simultaneously leaving it out all over. Won’t ride in his car if at all possible. Sharing a basement and sharing a spare multipurpose room is torture. He knows who’s needs better be met for organization in bathroom, kitchen and all closets. By the way the toothpaste and ketchup bottles. I now take the time to fold my tea towels because the container won’t fit what we need if I don’t! Underwear isn’t folded but it’s partitioned to keep it neat, and I only have what I wear. Car is neat mostly due to my husband 😂 Emails are not in folders but I read and delete ruthlessly daily, and papers are in a Sunday Basket that really only gets checked every few weeks, so I’m half detailed?

What's interesting is that I've always been a very detailed person (I was probably color coding in the womb), but the systems that are working great for me are pages you've taught me to loosen up and be more macro. My simplified filling categories had kept paper clutter under control for the first time ever, and not finding my underwear and my preschooler's clothes had meant less dread related to laundry and I'm keeping up better there too! ? Love this- I'm an INFP-& fellow Hufflepuff :) Cass, watching the first 5m, I've found myself answering that I do both the detailed & non detailed, & depended on my current energy level, having chronic illness; which thing I did. 'Spoonie' here. I'm also aware of things needing 'homes.' I pretty much do both of everything you gave examples for except the food & toothpaste-those I keep neat/closed. I use both scraps of paper jumbled as well as notebooks/journal/sketchbooks. (artist brain?) I both fold/roll or shove my delicates, towels rolled,etc. (side note: my illness makes me very clumsy, tripping, falling, knocking things over a lot, think-domino effect 24/7 everywhere; progress gets spoiled that way a lot.) ? Please-How do I figure it out from there? I've felt cricket-bee-ladybug & that doesn't surprise or bother me, I just would love to apply the right way for me. Thanks so much in advance! I think I am a bi-polar organizer. My car is the dumpster on wheels LOL, when I get home it is too hot to take the time to empty it on a regular basis. My purse does resemble a trash bag with handles now and then but I do regularly clean it out. I wrap cords. I have taken a view several times of your different videos on organizing styles and I am most definitely a BEE! I am so glad to find out that I am like I am for a reason. I once discribed my own organizing style with a stamped image of a tornado. The fact that I like to see my stuff or I don't remember where I put it causes most in my family to be terribly stressed. I too am stressed but get more stressed when I can't find my crafting items. We are a 4 generation household and I lost 2 dedicated craft rooms when circumstances called for us to open our home to family members. I am 70 now and my fantesy self is still dreaming of a big home filled with just me, my hubby, and my ton of craft items. Hubby's dream is that I will soon thin down our belongings because of the stress of owning, storing, and being crowded by it all. What to do for me, who is definitely visual & naturally is mostly non-detailed, but I also love when things ARE detailed because it makes it so much easier to easily find the exact things I’m looking for??? I know I am definitely visual, but I’ve always had trouble determining whether I’m a bee or a butterfly… and my husband is the exact same, visual & with some detail but not overwhelmingly so. It’s not just for different areas, but within each area there are some details but not others. I guess we just have to do trial & error on all the ideas for both bees & butterflies until we find what works 🤷‍♀️ I do LOVE you though, Cas - you & Dawn the minimal mom have helped me organize wayyyyyyy better than ever before in my life!!! (and I’m almost 40). I never knew how visual I was until I discovered you 6 months ago, because I was always trying to hide things away to please what everyone else around me (other than my husband & kids) thought was “normal” organizing (hidden)… Now I just need to do some fine-tuning to really nail things down 😁

This kind of freaked me out! My husband and I have been together over 52 years now....and I just found out he is non-detailed....but I am detailed!!! LOL!!! I always thought I was the one that was the real slob.....BUT!!! The open doors did it for me more than anything! I have left one open for three days....THREE!!!....and he never closed it! I finally couldn't take it anymore! He is very visual too.....wouldn't you think that someone who was visual would notice more that there is paper all over the floor by their chair? He just doesn't see it! LOL I loved this video!!!

IDK how I missed this video before... thought i had seen them all. 😂 But this should be linked with the Bug Quiz every time, bc it really helped me understand the differences. I'm a Cricket but my ADHD son is not, and learning about the bug categories REALLY helped me understand why he just stacks things up on the kitchen counter, instead of putting them away like I do. This understanding went a long way in helping me be less frustrated with him, so I am eternally indebted to you for that peace, Cas! ❤

Totally detailed. My underwear drawer is not only folded, but categorized by type of fabric and each fabric further organized by colors. (Dark colors and reds/purples are left for that time of the month) Same with my entire closet. Everything is by type and each type by color. I also actively use 4 planners to go from general brainstorming to detailed day to day tasks. My purse/backpack is always categorized and I can reach into any pocket without having to browse for what I'm looking for. For totes and stuff without pockets inside, I always have smaller bags/pencil cases to organize everything neatly and know right away where they are without wasting time/brain power. I do probably have ADHD, and, honestly, I learned to become detailed for my college thesis work and trained myself to return everything to its place. It was probably the best thing to come out of my Biochemistry degree. 😂😂 I'm still super messy and forgetful. I've made peace with the fact that I'm always going to struggle with that. But, my efforts have paid off enough that it's second nature to make sure to organize and give everything a home and, for the most part, put everything back once I'm done using it.

Lol the spatulas in the container on the counter! I have an old pottery crock on my counter full of all my kitchen utensils organized by type. It is definitely clear I'm a visual detailed person! 😁

Definitely detailed AND hidden. Although my currently apartment doesn't allow it. It drives me nuts that there isn't a linen closet, coat closet or pantry.

I am definitely a hidden organizer, but with the detailed part, I'm somewhere in the middle. I think I figured out that ideally I prefer it to be detailed, but I only do it if it's easy. So I like to sort things in specific categories, but only if all those categories are easily accessible in one step. If I have to open lids or take things out of closets, I don't put it away. But if things are in broad categories, they spiral out of control. I think drawers with drawer organizers are my best friend

How interesting! I’m only at the beginning right now, but chords: yes, I generally take care of them unless like with my toaster doesn’t really work very well to stow it away… my underwear is generally folded as well, and my socks etc. Not sure if that’s my natural style or expected from how I was raised. I do like to be able to find things quickly and that does help in that regard. But emails? I do have some folders, but are not used very regularly! The main folders I use our inbox, “unknown“ and then of course the trash and checking the junk folder… The other folders that I have made over the years are in some cases really old and haven’t been used perhaps in years… some photos get added to periodically, like maybe emails from Family or regarding business, finances or computers… Things I think I will want to or need to access in the future. But how often I actually do is not very much. 😂 I think my Cass organizing style is butterfly.

I‘m a semi-detailed visual organzier - for example, I actually organize my underware nowadays since I used to not be able to know what I own and if it is in laundry when I just tossed everything in the drawer 😅 If I put things away, ist has to be organized, yet I prefer to keep important stuff in sight. I hate it, when my husband puts „unused things away“, because he just stacks things in cupboards and drawers, regardless of system or completeness (e.g. if parts of an appliance are still in the dishwasher). Oh, and yes, I‘m almost 90 % 🐝 with sometimes minor tendencies toward 🦋

Thanks for this Video Cas!!! I'm a detailed/hidden clutterbug who always believed she was a non-detailed/visual bug! Im realizing that so much of my organizing style was/is informed by the people i live with(their bug styles) and the lack of access I have to storage solutions. If i could have all the bins and dividers - life would be a dream!!! 😅

I initially tested as a Ladybug. But as I’ve been decluttering and organizing, my style has shifted. I think I’m a Cricket now! I do like many of my pretty treasures to be visible, but everything else put away. That’s so much easier now that that I have much less inventory. I’ve taken your “Take Your House Back” course and have been working with a professional organizer. She has taken loads and loads out of my home for me. She even donated my books to the library! Thank you for inspiring and teaching me. 😘

In your system I am also a ladybug (and INFJ). But I do like detail oriented when there is a setup in place. So I do wrap up the cords, put away clothes and close drawers and doors, and would keep my kitchen appliances in a cabinet if I had a good setup. So I am working on making more of these things happen.

I have seen a lot of these video's and I've always felt like I'm both a detailed as a non-detailed organiser, and a visual and a hidden organiser. I still think that I'm a mixture of all but Ive made a list of the items in this video that actually apply to me and I looked at how in most cases I do or tend to do something and it made me think I'm mostly a butterfly. I also tend to be a perfectionist and see details easily, which I think made it confusing as I have a lot of trades of a butterfly I don't think if I'm doing some organising things in a non-butterfly way cause of reasons beyond myself, I think I've considered what's best per situation. For instance with laundry. I do fold the kitchen towels and such because I have a lot of them and also they are relatively easy to fold. Clothing I fold to save space too, I don't see the point in folding underwear, but I do like to fold socks (just 1 fold for a pear), and I fold other clothing too before putting them away. Only I don't fold (in a way they fit best) often because I like to keep stuff hanging on the (inside) clothing things. I take them as I need them and if I need to make space I do quick folds and I use the umh clothing things kinda like an open closet. Only when my washed clothing becomes too much, I'll start folding. For email and the pc (and kinda also with papers), I feel like I'm both detailed (organised) as not organised. I like to have a good structure but I find it hard to get there and to get every thing in there takes a lot of time. But not doing that is not good for me either. With a bag I guess it's kinda the same, a mixture. I generally like bins which are easy to open them but I don't need them to be see through and I'm not against lids with some of them, if I don't use them often I guess and when I want to stack a few they need lids. I don't leave kitchen cabinets doors open, but I leave clothes laying around a lot. I don't mind seeing a lot of things, but at some point it becomes too much and I become annoyed, not when it's just a bit here and a bit there.

Happy to say I'm detailed. My late grandmother said you can tell what kind of person is by their car. If it's clean their a clean and tidy person, if it's dirty well their a dirty and cluttered person.
