I was terribly bullied and ridiculed in school and by one of my siblings because I had a quite obvious physical impairment, a birth injury (Urb’s Palsy) resulting in my right arm being paralyzed. Never told my Mom about any of it. That wasn’t the childhood code, to tell. By the time medicine caught up with my issue, I was 8. A wonderful paediatric surgeon had perfected a surgical procedure that could help me. I was the 5th Canadian child to have the operation, and the 3rd success. I went on to a wonderful career as an ER nurse in Canada’s largest teaching hospital, had two wonderful kids, and have no idea where my tormentors are now. My self esteem is still and always will be 💩! If I had an email address to write to them, I’m afraid my comments would be less eloquent than yours! I’m so proud of you, Sarah! You took adversity and turned it into laughter. At work I was worthwhile. Outside of that, I deemed myself worthless. Unfortunately, this mind set is hard wired in my brain after 60+ years. Keep being you! You’re one of the few comedians who can make me laugh. I’d come to your show if you ever tour Canada. Just to say thanks for the laughter in person. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦

@@DrJudyASmith Thanks for the kind words. My kids are adults and I’m a grandma. Just turned 70. My kids know the gory details. My grandkids are 11 and 6 and their mother, my youngest, is very good at teaching them the right way to treat others and not bully. It was my visible disability that tempted the bullies, and my mom only found out because I got the mumps and was talking in a fevered haze. I gather a few parents got called though. Kids don’t tell. I’m retired now, have endured 11 major spinal fusions in 5 years, due to bad genes, and ended up forcibly retired at 48. Sure didn’t encourage my self esteem, as my job was my identity. It was a long hard road to recovery from the surgeries, but I left Toronto, bought a house in a small agricultural town, and live with a cat. When I was bullied as a kid my usual response was a right hook which usually quickly solved the problem. Psychological bullying in the workplace is far harder to deal with. Having been in the situation in the workplace I suggest documenting every incidence and saving any emails and when you believe you have enough evidence go to HR. You can alternatively use it as evidence for a constructive dismissal in an industrial tribunal. I am very protective of my staff and am generally quite well liked and not prone to going off on a rant, particularly in relation to staff below me in the organisation as I believe it is unproductive. I will however happily go and tear a strip of other managers if I feel they are bullying my staff as when confronted by someone on a similar level in the organisation who is usually quiet and is obviously angry at their behaviour they tend to pull back a bit.
