I'm glad you like that. I try to keep my advice general, but sometimes it really helps to know where I'm at garden zone wise.

I'm in zone 5b and always start my peppers by the end of January. This year I'm trying to overwinter jalapenos in my basement. So far so good. If they survive, I'll make sure to keep 'em far away from my bell peppers so they don't cross-pollinate again.

I am in Zone 5b and there is no chance I can plant anything out at all in March, or generally April either. The ground is typically frozen solid for about a foot and a half that time of the year. And/or covered in snow. I can't reliably work the ground at all until early May, and then it is usually all mud. I can typically start to work the soil here and begin to plant things the same time the black flies come out, around Mother's Day.

We are Zone 6 but a lot the same. Everything that we plant in January will go out in our Cold frames in March. The frames keep the ground from freezing.

The only place on my farm that doesn't freeze deep is where the spring is. That stays open, otherwise the ground freezes on me here. Heck, this year my pond froze late and it has been frozen over since November ninth. A couple of years ago it was frozen over by October 15th :( Now, when I lived in northern NJ in zone 6 planting out in March was not a problem. I could usually work my soil in late February, or very early March and if it was a warm year I could have tomatoes in the ground by the end of April. Up here I don't dare put tomatoes out until the first week of June, and I've had my first killing frost here as early as August 19th.

Im 5b too. Mom and Dad always planted on Mother's Day. Our last frost is April 29th.... but you know how that goes!!! I start onions mid- late Feb and trying sweet potatoes this year so I'm getting slips going on my window sills. Other than that, mid March is early enuf without overgrowing and losing your starts to problems....

I'm also in zone 5b. I cover my garden beds with leaves, grass clippings, shredded cardboard, and plants cut at the root collar while leaving the roots intact in the ground at the end of autumn. I give the chives a thorough shake to scatter their seeds before covering them up for the winter and get some hardneck garlic into the ground as well. Then in March I clear it away and set up low hoop tunnels a couple weeks prior to sowing carrots and turnips in order to warm up the soil. I use the leaves to pack the base of those tunnels for added insulation. The only plants I even bother to put outdoors before May are marigolds. Most of the time they do fine the last week or so of April, though I'll cover them with a hoop tunnel if needed. I like to have them out a couple of weeks before the tomatoes, peppers, etc. to deter pests in advance. If you're having issues with mud, then I suggest using cover crops in late summer / early fall. Chop and drop. It's very helpful to keep your soul covered, both during the off season and in the growing seasons. Mulch that soil to keep it cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Not to mention that it'll add nutrients back into your soil and mitigate erosion.

i'm in zone 6b in Washington State, southern stevens county. i want to try starting onions early, though it's february now but it's still cold. I do have 2 greenhouses that go unused most of the year because it gets below freezing in there until a time when it's too hot during the day. i have no heaters or fans in there. I know outside we are still getting into the teens over night. But i'd like to give growing a try anyway. Will my onion seeds germinate out in the cold weather or do i need to germinate them inside and them move them out to the greenhouse when they emerge?
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 4 жыл бұрын
If you are still getting freezing temps in the green house then I would start them indoors. You need soil temps in the 60's or better to get the seeds to germinate.

I have a solarium that gets lost of light and is warm, just wondering if i still need grow lamps to start my seeds?
@StoneyAcresGardening
@StoneyAcresGardening 2 жыл бұрын
I feel that seedlings do best with 14 to 16 hours of light a day. This time of year you won't have that in your solarium. But you also don't need expensive grow lights. Some simple florescent or LED shop lights is all you need.
