Caitlin has already eclipsed Sheryl Swoopes. CAITLIN'S ROOKIE STAT LINE is BETTER THAN the STAT LINES FOR EACH of SHERYL'S MVP SEASONS!!!!! The thing that first got Swoopes hating on Caitlin is that Caitlin beat her 1993 NCAA tournament scoring record of 177 points (in 5 games due to a first round BYE) by scoring 191 points in 2023 (in six games due to NO first round bye). Sheryl is angry because Caitlin had six games to score her points in. However, Sheryl should consider this: because of Iowa's very limited bench, Caitlin had to play 40 minutes virtually every game from the start of the Big Ten tournament to, and including, the national championship game - that's 10 games played pretty close together (40 min/game) - a rough haul!

If it's anything to do with CC or the Fever that spits on them, she's on it, sense, logic and consistency be dam*ed; and (b) if I had to try to read her mind, I'd guess what she's saying in this instance is that CC has been given too much credit, at Kelsey's expense-- that CC is a credit hog, or that the media, Fever fans and others give everyone's rightfully earned flowers-- in this case, Kelsey's-- to Clark instead of to the players who deserve those flowers. You did your usual great, lawyerly job of refuting Swoopes' off the wall, agenda-driven b.s. If she were commenting on Larry Bird and the Celtics instead of CC and the Fever, she'd be trying to stir up the same trouble by making the same claims about Robert Parish vis a vis the Celtics and, implicitly, Bird. Kelsey wasn't the #1 or #2 option for receiving passes and shooting, the coaches wanted paint touches. The only way Kelsey could score was to create her own shots. She had to go iso to do it. We saw that at the beginning of the season, when Sides was still using Erica Wheeler as point guard and relegating Caitlin to the corner to wait for passes that never came. During this era, Kelsey knew that if she gave the ball up she'd never get it back

Obviously, a two guard gets a big boost from having a great passer at the one, but you still have to make those shots. So it goes both ways. Clark also benefitted from Mitchell's excellent shooting. She turns passes into assists. There are players who turn great passes into turnovers (and, indeed, several Fever players were doing that before they learned to look for Clark's darts). So what I am saying is that Mitchell benefitted Clark as well. As an illustration, imagine if Stockton had them take Malone away and they gave him Rodman instead, who was a great defender and rebounder but not a great scorer. There goes a few thousand assists.

I remember when Caitlin was awarded Eastern Conference Player of the Month for August after receiving several Player of the Week awards. Her reaction was to say she thought Kelsey deserved the POTM award. That is both gracious and I believe her honest opinion. Apparently Swoopes either didn’t hear that comment or conveniently “forgot” it.

What's with this idea of players getting participation trophies? I never see this nonsense in other sports. Frankly, I wouldn't lose sleep over Kelsey leaving TBH. There's always a hierarchy on teams, and Clark is at the top of that hierarchy. Stephenie White and Kelly talked about having players that want to fit around the core. If Kelsey wants to go chuck up shots somewhere else in obscurity, then be it. Already, she averaged more shots than Clark last season, so what else does she want.

As much as I am not a fan of Swoops, Kelsey didn't get the credit she deserved and that was league wide. Even Clark mentioned that she should have gotten a player of the week at least in one of her press-conferences. But she could have been given a lot more credit all around. Swoops like to keep mess going. But if she puts this out, it gives the Fever the ability to reevaluate and MAKE SURE that Mitchell gets the love that she possibly feels that she didn't get. Sides benched Mitchell because she was "being Kelsey Mitchell" a couple of times. So, she was checked. And rightly so. But even Mitchell made it seem as though she wouldn't be with the league next year. Mitchell even spoke as though she wanted out at one point. It's not just the Fever that messed up. The whole league messed up.

Kelsey said herself that her previous style was to "be under the radar" but she was also enjoying the extra attention in 2024 and getting used to dealing with it. I'm not sure it falls on the league to promote individual players if the Franchise doesn't promote them first. If a player isn't breaking Franchise records its probably difficult to justify the Franchise elevating a player in a team sport.

I would need to know how the Fever treated their players before 2024, but my suspicion is that they've had to do a lot more work in 2024 and I'd only be concerned it they aren't more on top of it for 2025.

Nothing against Kelsey Mitchell, but there were moments when she went all ball hog and turned CC into the invisible woman too many times. Kelsey Mitchell is a free agent, who is edit 28 years old and is coming up on her best-before date, if she stays, how would she fit into the direction that the fever seems to be turning to, in particular building a long-term competitive team and how would she fit in. .

Are there other players who can step into that role and stay in the role? My thoughts on that last point is that Kelsey Mitchell might not stay in that role, and allow the ball to run through Clark and that should be a no-no. Or are there players coming into the draft in 2025 who would fill the space? @@dbs1136 Ah, I see your point about long term. I still think Kelsey Mitchell fits. I doubt ANY player will sign a contract longer than 1 year, because the new collective bargaining agreement is expected to lead to a higher pay scale. It will take effect for the 2026 season. Players won't want to sign a contract beyond the 2025 season because they'll want the door to be open for them to negotiate new contracts with higher salaries under the new CBA. As for embracing her role, I think Kelsey works be okay with it. She is now being talked about as part of the best back court in the league, one of the Splash Sisters. She loses that buzz if she leaves Fever. That said, Fever could use a good backup for her to sub in when needed. The bench should be populated with capable young players with the potential to move into position as the vets age out of the league.

I never thought I’d agree with Sheryl swoopes… I can’t stand her. But I noticed when they introduced the new (former) coach…. The New president kept mentioning CC, Aaliyah Boston and Lexi Hull. It was noticeable to me she didn’t mention Kelsey Mitchell.IMO the 3 best players are CC, AB and KM. I would consider Lexi 4th. I was wondering was Kelsey in the middle of a contract negotiations with Fever but that wouldn’t make sense unless they didn’t want Kelsey. Just this week the coach said Kelsey was very important. But the obvious lack of saying Kelsey’s name at that press conference was a miss in my opinion if it wasn’t intentional. I believe there was something behind it.
