The worst part of watching this very inspiring video is wanting to do a closet-clean-out but being inhibited because I bought a bunch of lovely new and in-style clothes but then......the stay at home orders came in and I gained a lot of weight. Now I hesitate to get rid of all of the beautiful things that I bought because I want to wear them when/if I lose the weight.
@Myover50fashionlife

You may lose the weight. I just lost 1 stone unexpectedly through medication but it’s a weight that better suits me. So store them away in case. Use belts to wear them now if that works too.

I gave up and did toss all my slim clothes, then I had to retire because my health was so bad. Once I had time to focus on myself, not only have I regained my health, but I've been able to drop all the excess weight, now I have a wardrobe of stuff that's too big!!! So I'm slowly buying a few smaller items again, and giving away the too big ones.😢😢

Thank you for articulating exactly what I needed to hear. I am transitioning from a work life to stay at home and it is difficult to get rid of clothes that I loved, but there is just no way I will wear again. You reminded me it's about moving forward especially at my age (58). My goal is to keep current, but be age appropriate.

@@lorrainehughes-smith199 I get it, a smaller wardrobe with better quality always makes me feel put together, even if it is a quick t shirt and jeans outfit for running around.

Thank you for this! I have a closet full of items from around 2008 until now. I never wear the older items anymore and when you said something about that being the past it was like a lightbulb went off. I love my 53 year old current modern life and I really don’t need to saving that one shirt I wore in 2009 for ‘someday’ 😬 time to make some space in my closet!

This was very interesting - as I was surprised at some of the colors. Then I realized that your hair is evolving, and (like me) the grayer color, which is lovely, is a little draining and I think brighter, clearer colors would be more flattering. I was always a person that liked "greyed-out" colors, subdued blues, greens etc. but now that my hair is white (which was a real surprise) a lot of what worked before, doesn't work now. I realize that skin tone doesn't usually change, but found that what worked as a honey blonde definitely doesn't look as good now that I am more silvery gray/white. Doing a clear out like this is so therapeutic! Love the top you decided to keep. Agree that dated styles really have to go, but if they have been favorites, it's hard!

A clear out at the end of each season is a good idea, we dont always do it, but it feels so much better to get rid of stuff we are just not wearing and can actually see our wearable items better....

1st, ur hair looks so cute today. 2nd, I'm in my 50s & I have clothes that are still in wonderful shape, favorite colors, but ppl comment that it's not current. Sometimes, I let a piece go, but other times I keep. U make such a good point, we need to let go of some thgs we like because they do make us look older & my hope is to look stylish and relevant. Excellent topic for this vlog. 🙂

Thank you so much. Im glad it was useful. Yes i do believe we don't look with the times if we wear things that were clearly in style over 5 years ago . Use them for just in the house and housework, gardening days maybe. I'm surprised ppl have been rude enough to tell you though, unless its your children. I think they can tell us meaning well.

I LOVE your video! It gave me help and lots of ideas. I'm all for wardrobe changes and as a once-blonde-now-white-haired 70 year old, a number of things I own make me look dumpy (yuck!) It doesn't help that I carry around a few too many extra pounds, but I've been sewing since age 7 or 8, and as an "almost-seamstress," I know that virtually anything which fits properly or is somewhat loose can be updated There are exceptions of course, like those waterfall cardigans. They're pretty awful. But if you know or can make friends with a seamstress or perhaps find someone who's experienced at sewing, many decent quality items can be altered to freshen them up, making them more modern and attractive. Side seams can be adjusted, changing boxy to shapely. Three-quarter sleeves with long ruffles at the end would look newer with the ruffles removed and perhaps the neckline changed. Round necklines can be changed to V-necks, V-neck can be made square. Your much-loved navy blue t-shirt could have the stretched-out neckline binding fixed or even replaced with a contrasting color. And that same color could be added to the sleeves in a color-block way with a rectangular piece going from the neckline down over the shoulder to the sleeve-edge. Your pretty teal hi-low top could be turned into something exquisite with the lo-o-o-ng back hem shortened, the neckline changed to a "V" with an understated white or turquoise lace insert. The piece cut off the back could be used to lengthen the front and the entire shirt-tail enhanced with that same understated lace judiciously placed around the hem, hiding the "extension" that makes the front long enough (I don't like little tummy bulges showing either). It could be hi-low still if desired, just much less dramatic. That teal color was so beautiful for you. It's possible to add crotch depth to jeans such as your nice white ones so the waist is higher on you and they could be shortened into a Capri style if you like those - nice casual summer wear that in my mind is timeless. None of this would work for you unless you find a seamstress, REALLY hate to part with items so pretty like the turquoise top and truly WANT to update it, so these are merely suggestions. I like new clothes too and I do buy them, but hate spending a lot of money on poorly-made mass-produced items when I can make better myself. I've been known to take apart and re-fashion something I've bought because the fit is just a teensy bit off or hangs wrong. Yep! I'm a bit nuts, but for me - it's a fun way to go and I end up with something fresh that no-one knows has been re-fashioned. So please keep donating (that's always smart in my book) and perhaps think about finding that seamstress so you can keep the things you really like simply by having them re-fashioned.

I'm 33 and I still wear waterfall tunics and cardigans with leggings. I'm am inverted triangle/apple shape and I carry some extra weight. Not only is it comfortable but it gives my body a bit of balance and makes me look less top heavy. I also like cold shoulders because they make my shoulders look smaller. In fact I recently bought a waterfall cardigan from lidl. I don't live in the UK anymore, I have lived in bulgaria for years where any woman out of high school doesn't care about trends so I don't feel awful about it. British women definitely pay more attention to their wardrobe and wear more makeup.

Great advice. I do have a few thin waterfall cardigans that I still love to take on trips to warmer places because they wrap around so cozily in the evening. I tie them at the waist with a dress and it’s so cute and current. Otherwise chunky cardigans for me, especially as I’m always cold. So glad those cold shoulder tops are finally out.

I haven’t been wearing jeans for a few years now and wasn’t sure why. Pulled them out and tried on every single pair, from skinnies to straight to wide leg. They all seemed to fit but most were uncomfortable to move in. Something was wrong. When I measured the rise on the ones that did feel comfortable I realised I need a rise of at least 12”. So a lot of my jeans are being given away and I’m going shopping for a couple of pairs of new ones that must be a perfect fit. Anything with a v neck is also going. They just don’t look good on me.

What an entertaining video - thank you! And very sensible decisions you made , I think Would you be offended if I made a suggestion or two that would make your ‘ look’ more contemporary and youthful ? Firstly, the centre parting you wear is actually rather age-ing ... just try making a parting more to one side. Your hair will achieve some height above your face which is flattering and will help to lift the eye up , rather than dragging the eye downwards with two straight ‘curtains’ either side of your face . And , after all , when we are teaching 60 , it’s nice to focus upwards , as you know ! Secondly , have you tried a shirt top ? Those scoop necks and round necks become less flattering as we age .... a shirt collar frames the face and elongates the neck which looks far , far more elegant. Try it - you’ll see how great you look! Kind regards xx

Thank you. You spotted my lockdown hair. It was a work in progress not having had a cut for 6 months. Yes my hair was side parted last cut but having grown i had to move it and had this awful curtain. Now again a few months more on my hair has got over that awkward wayward length and ive lost the curtain now. I did a video on my hair problems at the time. Urgh. Due my first cut next month and now ive got it longer than in this video I'm going to keep it long for a while. You are right about blouses. Much better for us but I'm rebelling against collars a bit as only just stopped wearing them for work in the office. Been structured in collars for 40 years but now after a year at home ready to navigate to them again. Thank you for your very pertinent comments. I appreciate helpful advice like yours as we are women together here helping each other.

Those waterfall cardigans are okay until you put a shorter coat or jacket over them, then they hang out hideously. Am so glad I never bought into the cold shoulder look. Unless it's a tiny slit opening, I do not find them flattering on anyone. Those sleeveless tops can be worn as summer pajama tops.

I have things in my wardrobe that I love and feel good in, they are not current but I'm not throwing them away. I'm 4' 11" in height and have enough problems finding clothes that fit my cuddly frame without throwing away everything that isn't bang up to date. Just my opinion. Just saying 😀

I love how you painstakingly let go of the blue tee. I know I have a few of those pieces. Going to do my jeans. You inspired me and it’s a relatively cool day today. Nothing worse than peeling denim off of sweaty thighs. Here goes. Subscribing because you remind me of me. Bonus…all fit. Only the Ralph Lauren look iffy. Found $24 in the pocket of one pair. I am pretty much a purest when it comes to jeans. I have only one pair of skinny jeans that I bought at the of the trend…they are buried somewhere.

Retirement from commercial driving for 33 years was hard to do for me. But....not in the clothes department!!! I'm free to wear that maxi dress to the grocery store! I lost all my weight(25lbs), and I'm now a size 4!!! I wear a lot more girly clothes now. No, not the stuff I wore in my 30s, but definitely feminine! Oh man it's been fun! It's been 4 years now, thanks to nagging doctors, I kept the weight off, I work hard in my garden, I'm in the best shape I've been since my 20s! WOW!!!! Retirement may not be the solution I expected, but the freedom saved my life! I hope everybody gets it this good, I cant believe I got so lucky, was a lot harder growing up! Damn I'm grateful!🌹🌹🌹

I'm watching you but everything you are mentioning are still in the stores and still in the patterns if you make your own clothes so I don't see where they're going out of style. All the stores are still carrying these types of clothes

Hi its the shape ie sharkbite and waterfall shapes and cold shoulder that i was refering to not colours or patterns. Where i do get of a patterned item its not because of yhe pattern but another reason such as my new lifestyle.

If you’re going to get rid of something…take the scissors to it. Cut that bell off those sleeves. Cut the back off that two level top.

I don’t know,,, I am very soon to be 68, & slight petite, gotta remember with the skinny jeans tank tops tube tops cardigans etc. history repeats history, flare is back , & bell bottoms pedal pushers, called Capri ‘s today. I myself very pickie how I dress. I do closet sweep with clothes I’m just simply tired of Not because they’re dated I don’t think there is a such thing as dated, anything goes these days.🤗

'Unfortunately' for me, I do alterations to make a garment look more fashionable. I have changed tops into scarfs, if I like the colour and material. The only things I have to give for charity, are those items I 'grew out of'!

Thank you. I’d say I also grew out of these items. Had them so long I got fed up with them. Better items now to reach for now in my wardrobe. But that wouldn’t make an interesting video, if I just said I got bored of them. 😂
