Yeah, I had gone to Home Depot earlier today and bought that Peat Moss and some of the top soil and some raised bed mix then mixed them all three together in my raised bed I just built. I had already put cardboard and yard litter and small limbs and an old bag of cedar mulch I had from a couple of years ago, in the bottom of it. The raised bed came out very nice. Planted 4 marigolds in the front part of the raised bed to help deter some pests. I will sprinkle some of the plant food in it tomorrow. Can't wait to plant all the seeds I bought from you! Thanks again for all you do. Peace and Good Fortune and Good Health to you and your family.

We've made 2 batches so far this season. Lol we mixed it up in a little swimming pool for young kids. I was using a fork and had it in a big mound and my wife said I looked like Richard Dreyfus in Close Encounters. We both enjoy your channel.
@joanies67784 жыл бұрын
LOL. That's exactly what I used! We had a strong wind and it blew into my yard... had a few holes in the bottom, so I assume someone had it at the dumpster to be picked up. So I thought, heck... I can use that to mix my garden soil with a pitch fork. Worked great!
@joanies67784 жыл бұрын
Already went out and bought some bags of mushroom compost, mixed equal amounts of previous year's raise garden bed soil. I love the mushroom compost! For new beds in pallets, I mixed 1/3 dirt, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 bag organic raised garden bed mix left over from over a year ago. (One has mushroom compost, too.) For a no dig sunflower garden over newspaper, I used 1/2 leftover raised bed mix and 1/2 peat moss, then threw in some vermiculite and fertilizer. It's all an improvement as far as texture. Well, time will tell what the plants like best. My lettuce and spinach transplants in the pallet bed with mushroom compost are struggling, but hopefully they will bounce back. I planted cabbages and kale in a different pallet bed, covered them with row cover and fencing to protect them from the freeze and winds... last look most of them have perked right up. I think they must go through a little shock when transplanted. Fingers crossed!

I started making Gary's recipe a few years ago and it has been just fantastic! Used to be equal parts topsoil, compost and peat, but now I do equal parts compost and peat with half a part perlite (I bought 2 giant bags - like double dog food bag size - for $50 online last year and saved a fortune, and it was delivered right to my door) and it seems to agree with my plants and my climate. I'm longing for the day when I can go back to raised beds, but this is a great solution in the meantime.

This is a great video. I have a large tub that I use to mix my own garden soil. Same ingredients... larger amounts. I use a 1cf bag of top soil (which is 57 cents at end of season sale at True value Hardware), 1cf bag of generic "manure and compost" (97 ¢, you can spent $6 to $8 on black cow... but why?), about 1/4 bale of Peat Moss (typically I can get this for about $10 at TSC), 2 handfuls of organic fertilizer (which I buy from box stores for $1 (small bag) to $7 (20lb) a bag on clearance when they put Halloween stuff out... I buy A LOT), and depending on what I'm planting... I sometimes add a 1/4 cup of Epsom Salts, eggshell, spent coffee grounds, DE, bait fish, oyster/ clam shells, beer 🍺 (slug lure...be careful), chopped mint, chopped garlic, chopped hot peppers, and composted chicken manure. Fresh rabbit pellets and worm castings I use frequently is my plants are showing signs of stress or disease.

Took your advice from earlier videos and went with a 50/50 split on leaf compost and a potting mix for my container garden with lime and fertilizer mixed in depending on the plant. So far the results are great in early growth up here in zone 5b around Chicagoland. Really appreciate the level of detail you go into with your videos. I’ve had the best success with the miracle gro nature’s care raised bed mix. I’ve begun experimenting with the miracle gro performance organics but with the inground. The black and gold label sold me. It hasn’t been really good for seed germination but it’s been fine for growing zucchini. After this year I may buy some perlite and peat moss and mix it in.

This was a great primer…thanks! I’m trying to renovate the vintage gardens at our Recently purchased FOREVER home, located at the base of a mountain. It’s been…interesting!! One thing I will say about the $3 a bag dirt these days (2022)..it seems to be made up of not-fully-composted pallet wood and sand…they’re isn’t any part of it that I would call dirt or soil…I’ve already taken soooo many clay clods OUT of the garden beds that I’m reluctant to put any more “high-fiber” filler back in them…even if it will all ultimately degrade down to good stuff. What’s a gardener to do??
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
Nice on the forever home. My current one is that. Yep wood and pallet wood in those bags. Compost is good to make. Lots of grass if you have it, those bags of pallet wood can go in that. They shreds break down faster that way. Also looking for local landscape companies can help for bulk soil. I understand this is cheaper but what size raised bed are you able to "fill" with that amount of soil mixture? My raised beds are made out of 2x10x10'x4'. In some of them I layered wet cardboard and/or newsprint then a mixture of either my natural garden soil or some bagged soil with peat and compost. I fight with all kinds of grasses/weeds from my farm invading these beds. The next beds I build will have a layer of a professional grade of landscape fabric in them to hopefully suppress the weed pressure. I used this fabric on the ground in my backyard plant nursery for years and it really does suppress grass growth. I plan to start using deep layers of wood chips between my beds and walkways to help with that weed pressure also.

Peat will benefit in water retention. Compost benefits soil life, soil structure, and nutrients. More compost is probably best. I would go with looking locally at landscape companies for something pretty good and get a truck dump, if possible. That is the cheapest way to build garden soil. I wasn't counting on adding topsoil too but don't want to kill my strawberries, but if If you say I must have the top soil, I will run dig up some dirt to put in with it. I also have ash from burning wood, bone meal and blood meal available to go into the bed and also 10-10-10 or 9-3-4 fertilizers available it I need to add those to. What do you suggest?
