I found this Warren Teed adze at a second hand store and I picked it up with the intention of restoring it and using it as a grub hoe. I need a tool for grubbing up roots and clearing trails and this looked like the tool I would need. When I got looking at it I discovered that it is a woodworking adze usually used for shaping beams. I have also learned that people sometimes use this tool for working in the dirt an anyway. I am reaching out to all of you to see if I can get some of your experience to help me make a decision about how I will restore and use this tool. Thank you in advance and I hope you enjoy the video.

I know that they were considered essential to Pioneers to notch out wood for log cabins.

I fought fire for a number of years. I've dug a lot of line with an adze, it will be a great tool for you. Will be an awesome restoration and old tools deserve to have new life put back into them

I agree with Sunless. Use the tool as you see fit. Add to its history. You did your part by respecting it by researching it.

Fix it and use it. If you have no use for an adze in it's proper application, then use it as a grub hoe as you originally intended. As long as it's being used and not becoming junk or a display item.

I heve been living in Indonesia and we call this a Patjol. It is used for working the ground before seeding, also for mixing cement and many more. Still in use in Asia.

Great find! Glad to see you are staying safe. Hope family and friends are too. Wranglestar has a restoration for one similar to yours on you tube and you can see the entire handle shape there. A mattok would give you and your back a better chance of surviving clearing trails. The Adze was not designed for that kind of torture and torque placed on it. It is definitely a more refined cutting edge tool for beams like you said! Just watch your ankles and shins! Good to see another video! Thank you!

Called a 'Jem-bee' in East Africa (don't know their correct spelling) used to work the soil etc ... well it was in the early 60's when I was there.

🤔I use a mattok for general ground work its advantage is that it has blades at 90 degrees to one another, the flat blade I use for grubbing up soil, stones, etc, the axe blade can provide leverage for the flat blade when removing the stones. To cut through roots and chopping you simply turn the head over ( if you choose the adze you'll also need to carry an axe). In your position I'd restore the adze and use a mattok for the ground work. However it is your decision and there is no right or wrong, just go with what feels most comfortable for yourself. 👍

Hi...Given your woodworking skills...particularly like your food garden fencing..I'd keep this find for wood use. We use what I call a backward hoe for ground clearing by hand, it's long handle and spade shaped blade being very versatile en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoe_(tool) First seen as a child in Sri Lanka, a 'mometi', then later life in Portugal, an enchada. So this influenced purchase for use here in Scotland! We find the mattock blade rather narrow tho it has its uses for rockier ground. Hope your clearing goes well...

Obviously there are purists out there who will cringe if you use any tool for it’s not intended purpose. However it’s your tool and you have to use it in the manner that makes your life easier. If you find using it to clear trails is what works for you then that’s fantastic. Don’t let somebody else dissuade you from using the tool the way that best fits your Homestead. What’s better using a tool the way that it would work best for you, or letting it sit on a shelf somewhere not being used just because originally it was built for another purpose? Just my two cents.

It would be a shame to use it on ground work. And as you built on your homestead maybe restore it so you can prepare your own beams. It doesn't look meaty enough for groundbreaking, hit a few rocks or heavy roots and it will soon be knackered. I've got a pickaxe (spike/flat blade type) that I use so easy. But then again it's your tool ,your choice.

Use it. What’s the point of a tool you won’t use?

While it'd be nice for it to be an adze, if you won't ever use an adze there's no point in restoring it as an adze. I don't think that handle profile will be much good on a grub hoe, since those tend to be straighter and significantly longer. Whichever handle you put on it, that'll prolly be its job 'till it gets a new one.
