YES, YES ,YES! The vegetarian food that is available here is AMAZING. I love being a vegetarian in China, so much to choose from and so many exciting new veggies to cook. When I go to Sweden, the food is what I miss the most about China.

well, i dont want to be the bummer but some of the vegetarian food is cooked with oil made out of pork. you might need to confirm that every time. sorry for mentioning that.

Isaac Wan well, most of what I eat is home cooked by me and my mother-in-law, so no pig oil in that haha. Plus there are so many halal restaurants here, that definitely don't serve anything with pig's fat in it. You can usually ask too, what oil they've used or if they have bones etc. in the soup 😊

I don't eat meat so the first thing I learned how to say in Chinese was "without meat" and "I am a vegetarian." It is amazing how many dishes come with bits and pieces of fried pork! I love all the vegetable dishes you choose and also eggplant. I don't know how the street food scene is in Shenzhen but I would love to go out to clubs in my former city and then stumble to the street barbecue guy and just choose the vegetables I wanted and he would fry it up in front of me. I also recommend trying a whole barbecued eggplant, its delicious!

Hi Poppy, thank you so much to share this nice video. It is very nice to watch your videos while missing my hometown. I am from Guangdong province, and I love the food and life style over there especially Guangzhou. This video really reminds me of a lot of childhood memory. I listed all the food that is in my head right now, and if there is any that you haven't try yet, I really recommend these. Dim sum(早茶)if you go to a Dim sum restaurant at 9am, try order a pot of Chrysanthemum Tea (菊花茶)and ask for some sugar (砂糖), add 1 or 1/2 tsp of sugar into the tea and mix well, that is very nice. BBQ (roast duck or geese with sweet and sour plum sauce for dipping) (烧鸭,烧鹅) very long time boiled soap(煲汤) ->watercress pork bone soap is very good (西洋菜猪骨汤) very long time steamed soap (usually cooked over 6 hours) (炖汤) fresh congee with sliced fish, chicken, beef or seafood (生滚粥) delicious boiled chicken(or soy sauce chicken) (白切鸡) fresh steamed lake or ocean fish (清蒸鱼) silky steamed rice noodles with eggs and special soy sauce (鸡蛋肠粉) Cantonese style hotpot (completely different with Sichuan hotpot, and make sure you order chicken and crunchy fish (中山脆肉皖) for it! ) (打边炉) Chaozhou dishes (潮州菜) hand hit beef meat ball (supper delicious, good for hotpot) (手打牛肉丸) chaoshan beef hotpot (潮汕牛肉火锅) watercress (西洋菜) a kind of vegetable, good for hotpot, good for stir-fried with garlic stir-fried luffa with garlic (蒜蓉炒丝瓜) a kind of vegetable salty fish eggplant pot (咸鱼茄子煲) good with rice salt baked chicken or shrimp (盐焗鸡, 盐焗虾) which are the dishes that were cooked by hot salt Kejia dishes (客家菜) Bozai cake (钵仔糕) a kind of snack on the sweet steamed ground pork with vegetable(梅菜蒸肉饼) All the best!

I am a native Chinese who lives in Shenzhen. Here are my three recommended restaurants:1 面点王(mian dian wang) 2 红荔村肠粉 (hong li cun changfen)3 嘉旺(jiawang) These three are very famous restaurant chains. And there is an app called meituanwaimai ,it has all the food you want to try.And you could find all the locations of restaurants with various food with meituanwaimai app. There are at least 10 food streets in Shenzhen. And the sea coast from Shenzhen Bay Park to SeaWorld is very beautiful. It is the best place for jogging. And 茶溪谷度假公园 (Cha Xi Gu vacation park) is the best park in Shenzhen.

1.. is a play on words. 一点 Means a little. But you can also say 点点. So if someone asks you if you want something spicy, you can say dian dian. Basically the name of the shop is a little bit of tea, and agreed, it’s the best. The peppercorn is called Ma, if you order something Ma La, it is numbing spicy. It’s an acquired taste, I absolutely love it now.

The US cauliflower you mentioned is also available in China, and in fact that was what I knew about cauliflower when I was a child. In my memory, the cauliflower you had in China appeared in Chineses market about 10 or 15 years ago. Because it tastes much better than the 'old' one, it was quickly accepted by the Chinese people.

8:15 Pepper corn is optional, some local also do that. If you don't want pepper corn(that is called "Hua Jiao" in Chinese), you can say "Bu Yao Ma"(no numbing favor) or "Bu Yao Ha Jiao"(no pepper corn) or just "No Hua Jiao" before payment.

After living in China for so many years there are too many dishes to name but here are a few suggestions. Mind you not every region has every dish Chinese food is very localized Some dishes are not done right at all outside the area they come from From what you said I know it’s HuāJiāo 花椒 the Sichuan “peppercorn” you spoke of. That is not a peppercorn but instead a kind of dried berry. You can get them green when they are fresh or dried. Anyhow in China there are basically two types of spicy foods. One is ‘La’ the other is ‘Ma La’. ‘La’ simply refers to hot & spicy and these dishes won’t normally have any HuāJiāo in them. As La 辣 means Spicy. On the other hand you have my favorite 麻辣 Ma La The word Ma 麻 refers to your nemesis - 花椒 HuāJiāo. 麻辣 Ma La means Numbing Spicy Hot. The 花椒 HuāJiāo have an anesthetic quality that numbs parts of your tongue giving dishes a special flavor So if you like spicy but not numbing spicy ask for La de. Not Ma La de Ma La de dishes I marked **. Some you can ask for less HuāJiāo. 小一点花椒 My personal Favorite Chinese dishes: 拍黃瓜 Pai Hiang Gua 水煮牛肉 Shuǐ zhǔ niúròu** 辣子鸡 La Zi Ji** 宮保雞丁Gongbao Ji ding 干扁豆 Gan bian dou (sometimes**) 锅包肉 Guo Bao Rou 干煸土豆丝GanBianTuDouSi 宫保鸡丁gōng bǎo jī dīng 麻辣牛肉面 má là niú ròu miàn spicy beef noodle** 土豆牛肉拌面 Tǔdòu niúròu bàn miàn。Beef and potato noodles 兰州拉面 lán zhōu lā miàn Lanzhou Famous beef noodles 刀削面 Dao Xiao Mian knife cut noodles from Shanxi 蒜苔肉拌面 -Suan tai rou ban mian - Sour Garlic shoots on noodles 过油肉拌面 - Guo You Rou Ban Mian 家常虎皮尖椒 Jiācháng hǔ pí jiān jiāo Homemade tiger pepper

You know how hard for me to watch you tasting all those food but can't have any access to anything similar? I miss the day when I was still in China. QAQ Also suggestions: If you haven't tried wood ear before, you should try. Wood ear salad with peanut, seasoned with black vinegar, so good. Names 老醋木耳 or 老醋花生. Rice noodles with hen broth, 过桥米线 Roasted fish 烤鱼 Always served in big iron pot. Together you can order some vegetables. Crayfish 小龙虾 So many kinds of flavors but I suggest 十三香小龙虾. These are famous popular restaurant foods in these years. Also some suggestions but not very much popular and perhaps the taste are not very appreciable by foreigners. If you have the spare time perhaps you could give it a try. 鲫鱼豆腐汤 鱼头锅贴 凉拌猪头肉 夫妻肺片 艇仔粥(dip some 油条 in it!) 毛血旺

I never eat the peppercorn in any dishes on purpose. But most of the time, they just pop into your mouth inevitably, and all of a sudden my entire mouth goes numb. Terrible!

Hey poppy - love the tea from your favourite place as well! Try the oolong macchiato or black tea macchiato from the same place. Don’t do too sweet because the cream they use in it is sweet as it is. Make sure to shake the drink up as well! Super jealous that you can go as I left china a year ago and miss it so much! Also try the fried version of 土豆丝 (potato you were talking about! Amazing. Also try 兰州拉面 restaurants and if you’re in one you NEED to try 牛肉拉面. You can try this food in any of the small green halal restaurants. Look for the characters above!

Hi Poppy, thanks a lot for sharing videos like this. I will be moving to China soon and will work in Nanshan. Would really appreciate if you can show more of the real estate market, food and drinks including with their prices. :)

Sarp Kaya Chinese real estate market are crazy especially for cities with coast. Food are cheap in China, in Edmonton a small oyster costs you 1.25 Canadian dollar, in China you can get 1.5 pound with that much money. Drinks are cheap 600ml pepsi cost 3-4 Chinese Yuan which is about 0.6 US dollar; 500ml bottle water cost 1-2 yuan which about 0.3 USD There are exceptions, like imported alcohol(whisky, vodka etc)and luxury water(Evian ), drink enough before you come. The price I showed you might different it depends on where you live, since you are going to live in Shenzhen, the price might a little bit higher. But I'm sure they are affordable. Ask me if you got any question. Beside, find a guide when you land in china, ask them how to pay with your phone it will make your live easier. Have a nice trip.

Purchasing a apartment in China, especially in big city could be absurdly expensive, the average price for a normal (not even decent one) condo in Beijing, Shanghai , or part area of Shenzhen would cost 200M US dollar, no kidding.

酸辣土豆丝is very easy to make at home too. Cute them and then put them in water, and then cut red pepper , get a big pan and put oil, heat the oil to high temperature and then fry peppercorns, then take them out, dry the potato and put them in the pan alone with red peppers. salt, till you can small cooked potato, off the heat, put Vinegar in, mix, thats it.

Hi Poppy lol, I am a Shenzhen local, It’s great to see your videos about my hometown. Good Job! Here’s some tips, 1) Try Yum Cha, I feel so weird that none of your video shows the most amazing food that could represent Canton. Shenzhen’s Yum Cha not as good as Hong Kong but still a must try. 2) Asking younger people for help. Due to generation gap, it’s better to ask teenagers or people in their 20s for help. Not offense, people wear better outfits most likely speak fluent English. 3) Visit Dongguan and Guangzhou. Those city represent the most authentic Cantonese lifestyle in Mainland China. Shenzhen is considered as a Immigrant City of domestic China, People all around China gathered together here to build this new modern city. Anyway, I lived in Nanshan as well, hope these help. Enjoy your day in China.

The strong "peppercorn" s called "花椒(Hua Jiao)". You can still order spicy food but be sure to specifically request it to go without Hua Jiao. Also, please do not miss out a type of soup hotpot call "椰子鸡, Coconut Chicken". It's a hotpot style cooking but they use pure coconut juice instead of any water or oil to boil the chicken and any other meat/vegetable you like.
