Dharma Chakra is the best symbol for India. It's represents Eternity, Kaal(time), prudency(closest translation of Dharma acc. to me) and Rule of Law. It connects us with other Dharmic countries, provides way to engage with non-dharmic cultures(prudency). Thought provoking question and thought-provoking reply by Shri AC. In Bharat we worship many animals in various ways, so an animal could indeed be a symbol representing India. It is fair that we want a symbol for India that directly conveys fierceness, but then such a symbol is only a (geo)political one, not a cultural one too. At the same time, our very own Asiatic elephant isn't a bad symbol to represent India after all. The negative impressions associated with it have originated only in the English language and in the western mind for whom the elephant was an 'exotic' animal. India being derogatorily called the land of elephants and snake charmers in the past is the reason why one may not want an elephant to be a symbol of India. But let's think about it from an internal, native, Bharatiya perspective: 1. Elephants are not slow and sleepy. While they mind their own most of the time, if provoked, their attack is speedy, dangerous, and delivered efficiently. Just like India's. 2. Elephants have excellent memory and "never forget". So they symbolize that we shouldn't forget our original civilizational roots, our culture, our history and how our earlier generations have suffered before we could be where we are today. 3. Elephants are, needless to say, naturally strong and inhabit large territories. Just like India. 4. We worship Ganesha and Vinayaki as symbols of buddhi, which we Indians have in abundance. 5. Like the elephant in the story with those blind men, India is tough to "figure out" for a common outsider. That doesn't make India what they think we are. We know we are the entire elephant, beautiful and majestic, with our diversity amalgamating into a single humongous cultural being and cultural identity. Understanding this phenomenon is beyond the understanding of ignorant minds. 6. The elephant isn't a predatory animal. Neither is Bharat an expansionist nation. 7. If we think elephants are animals that are domesticated, let's also remind ourselves of the state of tigers and so many other animals that are unethically kept and mistreated as pets in some other countries.

Personally I think the Elephant is fantastic. It is linked to prosperity (Sri Lakshmi), intelligence (Ganesha) and as an animal it can be terrifying and fearsome. It's gentle until provoked, but an angry Elephant will destroy everything in its path. I think that should be the sort of message we portray to the world.

I like the idea of the elephant being adopted as a cultural symbol. Elephants may not be as fast as cheetahs but I dare you guys to try avoiding a charging elephant, or better yet, try stopping one mid charge.
