I found DA:O really enjoyable too, for its time, but it has real issues with difficulty scaling. The default experience is so easy it makes the game a total cakewalk in a way that you have to fall asleep on your keyboard to die. At the same time Nightmare difficulty is straight up broken and makes the game tedious. Enemies get absolutely nonsensical elemental resistances and this with friendly fire just makes you in for a slog. This didn't get much better with Inquisition which is "damage sponges - the game".

@@Dyomaeth Nightmare isn't that hard really, not even close to broken. Normal difficulty should be the sweetspot for most new players, but now I can beat Nightmare with ease. So I use mods to make the game even harder. The only problem with the difficulty is that the game gets progressively easier the higher your level becomes. Everyone gets more powerful, but you make much more use of that power compared to the AI, so it ends up being easier at higher levels. Haven't found a mod that fixes this, but at least it makes you feel more powerful though.

Why do you like it more than for example deadfire? I really wanted to like those games ( i love DnD, pathfinder (pathfinder more but no one plays it), crpgs - and quality products in the genre are very scarce, therefor I started multiple runs many times played about half of both games several times but couldn't finish it) but it felt very... I don't know.. plain? I got really excited in the character creation, felt very robust and cool, but then in the game it felt very empty and barely anything seemed to be working good enough to be usable, so in the end there were far far less options in terms of spells/leveling/strategies/builds than in the deadfire which seemed less complex in the first look but everything there was working perfectly and ended up having a real impact:) Just for me Wotr in comparison to Deadfire seemed first-planned and cheap, but I'd like to hear your opinion on why you like pathfinder wotr more:)

It is first and foremost a mater of your own taste! I enjoyed deadfire as well, story was solid , well writen thus immersive as well as taking place in a somewhat unique setting! However yeah, if I had to chose I would go for wotr of even king maker. "I got really excited in the character creation, felt very robust and cool, but then in the game it felt very empty and barely anything seemed to be working good enough to be usable". I get that. In pathfinder making things work really comes down to how familiar you are with the rule set and knowing what the game is launching at you and when. To make it short, for most people a first/second play trhough might turn out as sloppy or even frustrating. Note that owlcat also makes little to no compromise when it comes to integrating certain mecanics, rules and classes that are by nature not "compatible" with the lore as it stands in the video game. But almost everything works more than fine as long as the game diffculty is set to core and bellow. The higher you go the more meta restricted the game will become and some archetypes will indeeed turn out totally useless. But the main things that make me side with pathfinder are the QOL features/ For instance, how easy it is to get the informations you need learn how things work, what happened, how a spell works etc etc. The UI is super clear and it really helps newer players as well as more seasoned players. I mean let be honest, we are playing a spread sheet calculator afterall, so it might as well be as clear, clean and sleak as possible ! I do love pillars of eternity as well but it is very hard to make sens of everything that is happening on screen especially since I played it before devs implemented turn based feature. So in the end for me the experience was rather frustrating... As I said, i really comes down to your own tastes afeterall ! And to be honest I should probably re run deadfire to come up with a more elaborated opinion ;).@@milansvancara

@10:19 - I think what also works in the Original Sin series (yes, even the first game was so close to being a masterpiece) is that all spells are on a cooldown system rather than spell slots as well as having Action Points rather than Action Types. This means you can let your imagination just run wild with all the possible ways you can approach combat. There's no resource to ration and save, and there're no long rests to consider. Hells, we even had Honor Mode encounters wherein we literally flood rooms with Rain, close all exits, then turn the water into poison via Contaminate. Enemies get damaged trying to reach us while we get healed because undead. Also, being less RNG reliant is a big plus. On a personal note, after 400+ hrs. on Baldur's Gate 3, the game hasn't given me a piece of idle NPC chatter (or any dialogue really) near as iconic and anger-inducing as Ada Laird's infamous "Keepin' it together, Bree?"

I strongly disagree with the idea that you should play PoE 2 without first playing PoE 1. It’s the same character, it’s an extension of the same story and playing the first one is important. I also personally disagree and think PoE 1 is better as far as story and general game structure. I like the 3 act system and how it’s all paced. The boat travel and all that doesn’t really gel with me personally but that may be unpopular. The introduction of multiclassing and the upgrades in combat are huge improvements in poe2 for sure, but that’s basically the only way I’d put it above poe1. The story in the first game is one of my all time favorites
@Undependable3 Жыл бұрын
I just can't stand the exposition bloat and long winded paragraphs. I don't deny that outside of this aspect PoE1 is also a great game. However I would also stress that outside of the opening 2 minutes of PoE2, it's really not necessary to play them in order.

@@Undependable3 I loved this about PoE1 as it is well written and i am a book reader, but if one isn't into reading books or doesn't want to read half a book while gaming i can see why this might be an issue.

technically you could consider Dragon Age Origins to be the original "Baldur's Gate 3" as it's the developer of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 going back to make another story-centric CRPG. technically you could say the same of Neverwinter Nights, but the aims there are so different (multiplayer,module focus) that I think DA:O fits the bill better. as someone whose PC isn't really up to the task for Baldur's Gate 3 and is waiting for the Xbox release (got a Series S on sale) that's what I've been doing to tide myself over, playing DA:O again for the first time in 10 years, and remembering why I love the game.

Some others not mentioned would be neverwinter nights (there an updated enhanced edition which I own but have not played as of yet) and icewind dale were classics I played back in the days of Bg1/Bg2. Dragon age 1 is also more like these game but moved away from turn based after that. Fallout 1 & 2 were mentioned but there also a lesser known game called Fallout Tactics which I enjoyed back in the day as well. On the witcher side of things I thought Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was good as well.

i really did not enjoy the divinity OS serries. played both quite a bit, messed around until i found a build i liked... and then i quit around what i think is act 2, not sure if it was the combat or the story, but it felt sluggish. here i am with almost 350 hours in BG 3 and my 4th playtrough, could still go for more. good that you praise pillars of eternity 2! it did not do well with sales from what i heard, and seeing there is no word about pillars of eternity 3, i suppose its true. i really enjoyed it, looking forward to avowed, but its not really what i wished for

Yeah, I started playing Original Sin 2 after BG3 and I got to The Nameless Isle and the game suddenly became unbearably boring and I just can't force myself to go back to it. Even with act 3 and the endings being a bit of a mess, in need of a definitive edition, BG3 is still really good and stays fun the whole way through.

Mmh i was never able to finish divinity original sin 1 because of boringness and sluggishness and all the reasons you mentioned BUT I still think beside story, characters and presentation Divinity2 is better than baldurs gate 3. Hear me out haha I think the riddles, secrets and mainly the synergy of abilities, builds, effects and environment is soo much better. You can create sooo much better and fun builds because a lot of effects have so great synergy and instead of dnd it was created for video game fun time. For example turn a enemy into a chicken cast a spell on it that damages him for walking and the chicken will dumb run around and kill itself because it’s too dumb to realize whats going on. puck up glasscanon feat become an assasin and build around the idea to make many actions in one turn, teleporting around and become invisible at the end of your turn. cast shackle of pain and prevent death and hurt attack your own companion but he will remain one lifepoint while the enemy who gets the same damage dies or cast lifeswap etc etc

The fact that you did not include Dragon Age Origins makes me think you don't really understand what BG3 really is. It's not really just a CRPG, because none of the other games on your list actually have fully rendered scenes, visible expressions in dialogue, some are not even voiced... I don't think you can really compare those to BG3. DA:O comes MUCH closer to what BG3 is, even though BG3 sticks to the D&D format, and DA:O does not. But the atmosphere and immersion in dialogue is much more alike. I think the lack of those aforementioned elements is why a lot of these games did not see anything near the popularity BG3 did.
@ThinkerT8 ай бұрын
I understand what you're saying, but to say "I don't think you can really compare [the games on the list] to BG3" and that DA:O is closer is just silly. While yes, the older games don't have the voice acting and fully rendered scenes that BG3 does, the core top-down/isometric gameplay of BG3 (which is the majority of the experience) is MUCH closer to the CRPG games on the list than it is to DA:O.
@TIMxisxHERE8 ай бұрын
@@ThinkerT I don't actually think it is, I've played quite a few CRPGs but none of them really reminded me of BG3. I think to say, ''the older games dont have the voice acting and fully rendered scenes...'' is something you might be underestimating. Since in this game a lot of time is spent in dialogue and I think I spent WAY more memorable time talking than anything else. I know some people don't care about this, but to me its worlds apart whether a game has visible emotions in conversations, or if there is just a line that says ''X laughs at you".

Enjoyed this video a lot! I don't know how fair it is to say that BG2 is a huge upgrade to BG1. Especially with the Enhanced Edition, which is mostly all you can buy these days, even on gog, It is all really just one game. It would be like saying Throne of Bhaal, the expansion to BG2, is a huge upgrade. It is all one game, at this point. Anybody should absolutely start with BG1, if only for the Tomes! Heh. Just the Str tome alone is massive, allowing any character to go to 19 str prior to BG2, which in 2nd edition was the 3-5th edition equivalent of going from around 14 str to around 24. Another way to put it would be it is like saying you should skip the first half of Act 1, if there was such an option, in BG3. I love your list; I'd probably add Dragon Age, but the combat in that is different enough that you might justifiably just think of it as a different genre. I think that the way Dragon Age pulls you (or at least me) in emotionally was very top-notch. And I actually GREATLY prefer the romance in Dragon Age. It was the only game where the romance aspect interested to me at all. BG3 romance mostly just detracts from the game and breaks immersion. Maybe it is the culture these days, but I found all of the women in BG3 quite unappealing as personalities, and also found it way too much for EVERY SINGLE MAN (other than Barcus) hitting on me very explicitly and strong. Halsin?! Really?! Sheesh. That sort of thing was handled fine in BG2. You had the Tiefling Bard, but you didn't have like Minsc, Anomen, Keldorn, and EVERYBODY trying to get into your man-pants incessantly. I 100% support people having whatever preferences they want, but no fantasy story or game has EVERYBODY in your party being bisexual and ready and asking to whip it out if you say the slightest non-mean thing to them.

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous is to 20% or 30% voice acted. You have to do a lot of reading. But still, my first crpg. And even if the character build system was way to complex, and I didnt want to spent an eternity on it, I just applied following rule: "If you hit something with a big fucking greatsword hard enough and often enough, it will eventually break". That rule goes for a lot of things.

Planescape Torment, Pathfinder Wrath of the Rigtheous, Disco Elysium, Pillares of Eternity 2, & maybe Divinity 2: Original Sin (BG3 does everything this one does, but far better). Planescape requires a love of reading novella's, and rewards you richly if you are down...outstanding literature with a fun pixel game to keep it interesting. PoE WotR might be the best CRPG outside of Baldur's Gate 3 if it weren't for the pesky army management minigame (srsly stop with minigames dev's, just put those resources into the CRPG). PoE2 Is VERY good...I don't have any negative critique's of it...choices matter, you get a pirate ship, your companions are well written, beautiful graphics bring to mind hand drawn art. Div:OS2 suffers only in comparison to BG3...you can see the design direction that they later perfected in BG3.
@Au_Ra804 Жыл бұрын
I can recommand Pillars of Eternity. It's one of my favorite games and the very first game I ever played, where I could actually perfectly play my OC from beginning to end. In PoE I could literally play with my quest giver, become a double agent, play both sides against each other, get double the reward and when both sides confronted each other I was like "I have nothing to do with this, bye" I have never had so much fun during a side quest as in that situation xD They also don't have that annoying approval system. I HATE approval systems. Makes playing a neutral character while also getting friendly with certain characters impossible. (You have no idea how careful I had to be during Astarions romance as good dark urge, jeezes) Instead, in PoE your companions are more like "y'know we've been on this journey for almost a year now and we almost died several times and saved each others lives more times than I can count so whatever weird urges you have I'll still be on your side" That was SUCH a good change from the robotic forced character I always have to play so that my companions don't just leave me, lol. Also makes much more sense. But PoE also didn't have romance so maybe that made it easier. Story and characters were amazing and PoE has the absolut best bard gameplay I've ever seen. I'm not a fan of PoE II: Deadfire tho. Haven't finished it either. Was full of bugs that never got fixed, the story progression was boring, the focus completely off, they added approval system and got me AC Black Flag PTSD with all the pirate/ship management. The game felt more like a pirate game than anything else. The change to the combat system was also very weird and unnecessary.
