I use water and have never had a problem with enough negative pressure sucking back the water into the fermenter. The simple solution is simply not to over fill the airlock. If you are really concerned there are now liquid free silicon airlocks that are designed to open when there is enough pressure inside the fermenter to allow out the CO2 and then close again tight when that pressure has been released.
@CynCopeland-TheAnswerIsMeat4 жыл бұрын
For my experimental batches, usually done in an 800ml Ball canning jar, I use a 'pickle pebble' silicon cover with a nipple through which CO2 can exit - works a treat!

So this is really nice to know. Thank you very much. :)

First time brewing and used your advice on using glycerin. It is quite thick and theres conflicting advice online to thin it with water or not... do you thin yours out? I just put pure glycerin in my S airlock...hope it works. Haven't seen bubbles yet! 😕

@@LiberateMyHatred : Tyvk 4 getting back to me; I put on my first brewing tonight, which will eventually end up as vinegar. At least that’s my aim. I had hoped to use glycerin, but the glycerine I had in the cupboard has been around since before the pandemic, and I don’t know if it’s possible for glycerine to spoil, but mine is sort of watery now, so I ended up going with water In a three-piece airlock. It’s kind of neat that I could see a little colonies already starting to form in the juice; tomorrow I think I’ll start another one with juice and pulp fresh from apples out back, and red wine yeast. Loved your clear instructive guidance in airlock liquids pro and contra....thanks, where can I get food grade glycerine ? I live in West Africa, question of finding it here ?? Any supply options ,pharmacies ??
@daphneraven67452 жыл бұрын
Michael Storto: Your comment is a couple of months old, so you probably have what you need by now. But I’ll answer anyway, just in case you’re still trying to get by with water in a hot climate, constantly having to replace it. You could try the local brew shop if you have one in your town; if not, go to the bakery section of your grocery store. You can find it with the stuff for making icing for cakes and muffins. You can also try a bakery supply shop, or if you have a bulk foods supply shop in your area. If you live in a really tiny town and don’t have most of those things, but you do have a bakery, you could approach the baker and see if s/he would bring in a container for you or sell you a container of glycerin. I have gotten glycerine at the pharmacy. But you wanna make sure that you’re getting food grade, because I don’t know how cosmetic grade would be. That is to say, I don’t know if there would be some component of it it wouldn’t be as good for your culture in your carbuoy. But you could always talk to your pharmacist and see if they can order it in for you, and if so how much they would charge you for it. That’s a good idea.

@@daphneraven6745 thank you. not too old, no. I appreciate the information, here in W.Africa its not evident to find the most simple things. best regards 🙏🏻👍
@daphneraven67452 жыл бұрын
@@michaelstorto8658 : : No. You’re quite welcome and I hope it helps. I guess that’s the one difficulty about working inside an informal international community: sometimes supply doesn’t translate quite so well. :-) I don’t know how big a DIYer you are, But if it really came down to it and you’re comfortable working with some chemicals, there are tutorials on here to make your own, but that presupposes access to apparatus and chemicals. It seems to me that decades ago, people in South America were making biodiesel. I think it was a movie borne of desperation, so I can’t help but suspect that there’s a simple way to produce glycerin, as it’s essentially the same process, using the same ingredients.

Just bought glycerol and changed over! What a great tip! One drawback I’ve noticed- it’s not so good in the cheap plastic demijohns- the seals through the lids on mines are obviously poor. The co2 is escaping through the seal instead of pushing the glycerol up. 🤷♂️ worth pointing out- it’s an easy fix to put a better seal in. (I’m using balloons just now till the new deals set! 🎈
