From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/page... - Learn how to choose the right size filter for your swimming pool. The flow rate needed for your swimming pool is an essential number to size the filter correctly. Sand filter, cartridge filter and DE filter each have their own maximum design flow rate and this is an important consideration when choosing your new filter.

Awesome video. I going to be installing a 20k inground vinyl pool with a rock waterfall. I was going to buy the intelliflo vs pump max 170 gpm. The filter is going to be a Pentair Quad DE 60 max 120gpm. I wanted to just buy one pump for the pool and the waterfall. But I see the difference in gpm is substantial. What do you think?

Can you repeat the part about the thingy and how it relates to the whatchamucallit for the water stuff? Sorry, I just purchased a home with an above ground pool and I'm trying to make sense of the old equipment left behind and what I need to do. I'm sure this video will help me after I learn more about the words/concepts you've discussed.

Single carts for the win. Clean filter more often means better efficiency. Industry needs to figure this our already. Always explain to customer another guy may say it’s undersized but there wrong.

Does it matter what the pump size is? I had a pool installed and the pump moves 75 gpm while my filter is designed for 50 gpm. I notice that when I first turn the pump on the water is dirty. Does this mean my pump is too big/filter is too small?

I feel like I'm stuck. Single stage motor went out, so I upgraded to a 1.5HP variable. I have a 33,000 in ground. The piping is only 1.5." Currently has a 300lb sand filter showing a max GPH of 62. I installed my flow meter this weekend. When I run MAX speed on the pump 3450 RPM, I'm only getting around 55 GPM but it seems to vibrate the piping leaving the filter where the meter is, so I don't feel it is sustainable. I want to take advantage of the power/money savings on my new pump. I guess I will need to look into a cartridge filter next season. The spending never ends.

@Swimmingpoolsteve 2 жыл бұрын
I dont think you need a new filter. And you do not need to run at 62gpm. You might not even need 55 and if you do run 55gpm it will only be for a few hours each day. Variable speed is all about long hours at lower speeds. I think a cartridge filter is great, and definitely an upgrade from a sand filter, but it is not needed for you to save money with a VS pump. Sand filters are a flow restriction with the sand tank but especially the multiport valve. Cartridge filters are substantially better in this way. In short I like to say that a cartridge filter is about three times as good as a sand filter, and costs about three times as much money as a sand filter also. Yes there is something to be said about ROI for improvements to flow efficiency of your system, but these gains are made back so slowly I do not feel like pool owners see the reward in the same way as they do upgrading to a variable speed pump, which definitely has immediate and noticeable cost savings to the system.

@@Swimmingpoolsteve Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I don't see a reasonable way I can circulate my pool 3 times a day with my plumbing, and filter capacities. I'll try some different schedules with varying speeds to see what the pool looks like. Before installing the flow meter, I was running 12 hours @ 2500 RPM, and 12 hours @ 1500 RPM. After installing the meter and reading, that results in the pool being turned over ~1.5x per day. Thank you again.

I have a 40,000 gallon pool, in ground, with a 2.5 pump, and a 60sqft de filter. I keep having to wash the filters every 3 weeks. There are no cracks in the manifold and the filters are not torn. I had the chemistry tested of the water and it's within good levels. I get algae build up constantly and, like I said, I have to clem the filters constantly. What should I do?

@@Swimmingpoolsteve we need to talk as well lol would like to know why you said a concrete block hollow filled rebar through all bricks filled with cement .concrete poured floor would not work. waterproof rendered walls screed floor and painted.many you tubers have done this and its worked great .even years later updated video its still working great all these pools have been quite small pools
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve 4 жыл бұрын
@@SimoneOconnell The swimming pool industry has standards which help to establish things like congruency of construction practices and longevity of design. The pool you are talking about was popular in the 60's and 70's. They all failed early. I don't know about where you are, but I have never seen a 50 year old block wall pool still operating. Have you? I have however seen and worked on hundreds of concrete pool in the 50+ year range. Yes you can build a block wall pool. You can parge the wall and paint it, but that pool is not waterproof. It will not sustain long term with movement in the ground resulting in blocks splitting along the grout lines. These pools will experience continual failure of the interior surface cracking along those grout lines. Concrete pools are not waterproof in the slightest. If I poured a uniform concrete bowl that is not waterproof at all. It leaks water readily. If you build the same structure with individual blocks with 1000 ground joints more than my uniformly poured vessel, how much water do you think leaks from yours? And you say make the wall waterproof like that is easy to do. If it was you would be worth a billion dollars. Water resistant is a thing, as is highly water resistant. Then you have membrane solutions which can oppose hydrostatic pressure in one direction like redgard or hydroban, but they fail from negative hydrostatic pressure or a single puncture of the membrane. More recently you have basecrete which is resists hydrostatic pressure from two directions, perfect for things like weir walls in infinity edge pools. So there is a deep and technical world to building concrete pools. Your block wall pool is the cheapest way to build a concrete pool by a factor of 10. It has a million known failure points that are avoided with more sophisticated (and expensive) construction methods. I avoid your question because it is uncomfortable for me to tell you that you did not follow the known conventions about concrete pool construction and your pool is a DIY version of a concrete pool that I would not own personally or endorse professionally. But sure it is the cheapest way to build a concrete-like pool that definitely works like a pool, probably leaks more than it should, might not last as long as it should, but that is up to you. When I make a huge, permanent hole in the ground attached to the most expensive purchase people will ever make (their house) I prefer to follow a construction practice which has the highest chance of success, efficiency and longevity. I would be a youtube pool that "totally works great" would not fare well being inspected for deficiencies at the commercial level. Sorry for being blunt but if you are going to jump in with this comment in all of my videos we might as well head it off now. I am happy you like your pool. I would not recommend people to build a block wall pool UNLESS you intend to use a vinyl or PVC liner.
