What size should you cut your Boxed Corners when sewing bags?

Today we're making the same bag three times. Each bag is made with four 10" x 8" rectangles of fabric, with fusible fleece ironed to the outer two rectangles.
The bags have either a 1", 2" or 3" boxed corner, so we can really see the difference it makes to change up the size of the boxed corners.

Love learning new approaches. Every bag I’ve ever made, sewed the zipper first, but the the sides, then the boxed corners last, then turn the bag. I’ll try this way next time. And I use clips not pins, can sometimes be much easier ( for me. At least 😊) But fabulous tutorial. Thank you.

Thank you for this great tutorial! I appreciate watching different techniques that encourage me to try and see what feels right (and have the patience for😊), with pouch and bag sewing, especially the ones with a zipper. I usually favor 1-1/2" to 2" boxed corners for my simple grocery totes and now see what a difference a 3" corner makes! I like your (longer) zipper first, then sewing boxed corners next, technique.

If I have a pouch or tote in mind, I figure out how wide, and how big I want the sides to be. I add in the seam allowances and make my cuts. So for a 10 inch wide by 12 inch high bag with a 2 inch gusset (side) I add half the gusset to each side, 12 inches wide plus seam allowance. Cut the height the same way, whatever the finished height plus half the gusset added to the bottom only. So that would be 13 inches. Add your desired seam allowance for the bottom and the top where your zipper will go. Any pattern can be adjusted in this way. Happy sewing!

FYI, there was a weird sound issue in this video. I could hear you fine with your microphone, but I heard a weird sound in and out, most noticable wherever you stop and start talking, kindof like static or a fuzzy old tv. I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but it was a little distracting for me. Thought you'd want to look into it so it doesn't affect future videos.

Sound issue was worse when you moved further away from the sewing machine if that helps you determine where to reposition the microphone to. If you can't reposition, try turning the gain up on the microphone slightly if you have that facility in your recording software 🙂

For the height measurements does cutting a 1" corner reduce height by 2", 2" reduce by 4", 3" reduce by 6"? And ate these the same for the bottom width? This is something that never seems to be explained in detail

Cutting them first and then sewing doesnt give a true 1”, 2” or 3” box corner, you will loose some inches with the seam. you need to mark the 1,2,3” from the sewn seam to get a true size.
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore Ай бұрын
@applelover53 it depends on how you measure your Boxed Corner. If you measure the depth of the entire bag when the bag is sewn together, or if you measure the cut that you make. For me, I measure the latter, not the former. Remember that we're not beholden to measurements. Measurements are a tool we use to gain consistently. With this method, I can consistently know what size I'm getting, even if my measurements aren't achieved the same way yours are. If you have a method that works for you, great! But that doesn't negate any other method, just like my method doesn't invalidate yours. ❤️

How can you make a bag with the boxed corners but the sides are straight up and down rather than angeling out? What measurements would you use?
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 28 күн бұрын
You'd have to start with a trapezoid shape that has the top angling in... but then when you open the bag, you have a smaller opening at the top (like a vase - small opening at the top, wider bottom). It could be really cute... but I'd want to make sure I still kept the top open wide enough for it to still be functional.

Curious why some bag makes say cut the corner after side is sewn. Measure out from seam line not the edge of the fabric why is that? Does it really matter?

@CarolinaMoore 18 күн бұрын
I've been getting lots of questions similar to this, so I have a video going up Thursday night (just finished editing) showing five ways to make your bags - different order of sewing, different ways to cut the corners... really, most of it comes down to preference. Some designers prefer a different way. This is my preferred way. None of them are wrong. Find your preferred way and do that. ❤️

Is the square actually an inch or inch plus seam allowance
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 16 күн бұрын
The square is an inch. Then gets bigger when you sew the seam. And a little smaller when you sew the seam allowances to put the bag together. So, it ends up at a fraction over the initial cut size.

I've made all types of bags for many years and I never cut the corners out first. I just make a triangle with whatever measurement I want the corner to be and stitch it. I always felt that if for whatever reason a stitch breaks, there's not a hole in the bag. When the corners are cut if a stitch breaks, you have an actual hole.
@kaybrown4758
@kaybrown4758 28 күн бұрын
If there is a lining two seams would have to break in order to end up with a hole. Highly unlikely. The triangle method leaves a lot of bulk in the bag/pouch/purse. It just doesn't look crisp and clean. Try using a heavy duty thread so it won't break. Fiercekittenz has a youtube video about thread and what can go thru a domestic machine. I have purchaed heavy duty thread and am very happy.
@cyvonn
@cyvonn 28 күн бұрын
@@kaybrown4758 I'm really happy with the triangle method and it's worked for me many years. I haven't noticed that the bulk on the underside of a bag is problematic.
@CarolinaMoore
@CarolinaMoore 28 күн бұрын
I first learned using the triangle method, so I'm very familiar. ❤️ It is still sewn closed, so threads could still break somehow. Although I've made lots of bags, and as long as I lock my stitches at the folds, it has never been a problem (regardless of the method). I prefer boxing my corners this way, but if another way works for you, do it!! There are lots of great techniques - I say you should do the one that gets *you* the best results, and that *you* enjoy most. ❤️
