What's really neat is the way they instinctively take turns staying alert. There's always one dog -- which switches throughout the night -- which is restless and pops its head up every few minutes to check for danger. We're seeing millions of years of evolved pack behaviour, and probably a large part of the reason why dogs became the first domesticated species.

My male German Shepherd is 5 yrs old and for the longest time I thought something was wrong with him because he didn’t seem to sleep more than 30-45 minutes at a time. He’s constantly patrolling, scaring the hell outta me in the middle of the night because he sees a leaf out of place on a tree 🤣. He sees cats, dogs and people with his insane 500 yard vision and will let the entire neighborhood know he’s going to bed when I let him out for the last time at night. He refuses to come in at night if he hasn’t checked our entire lot. He has 8-10 ft pogo stick vert reps and can clear our acre lot in about 3 bounds. He is an absolutely magnificent beast. He is the absolute best, most loyal, smartest dog I have ever had. I can’t imagine him leaving me at some point. Our bond is beyond measure.

My dog goes to bed around 10pm, but he'll never sleep until I do. If I work late in bed, sometime even until 2 pm, he'll be awake the entire time, just observing me from his bed. Once I remove everything from bed and turn around to sleep, I'll hear him giving a big, tired sigh and finally starting to sleep. Usually, 10 min later he's already snoring. Brings back memories 🥰. I grew up in a family with four GSD’s and one Malinois. As a kid I was forbidden to sneak the dogs in my bedroom but I did it anyway. Just one big pile of warm fluff. If I was sick they all layed around my bed, watching (and nibbeling my sandwiches). As a teen I sneaked out of the house with our Malinois because she could jump the fence with me (and I felt completely safe with my personal fluffy bodyguard). The GSD’s would not sound the alarm of me leaving on my own but on return… that’s why I always took the Malinois with me because then the GSD’s wouldn’t bark. Snuggles and kisses beats the way my German shepherd used to wake me up. Dixie wasn't allowed to sleep in bed with me, and she couldn't reach my face to kiss me awake. So she would stand next to my bed and slide her head under the covers to touch her cold, wet nose against my ribs. Guaranteed to wake you up, especially on cold winter mornings! As big and ferocious as she looked, Dixie was a big chicken, through and through. My bedroom is at the back of the house, not far from the back door. One Saturday morning at about 6 am, I heard someone try to break in through the back door. Dixie, who slept at the foot of my bed, heard it, too, and she raised a ruckus, barking as loud as she could. But she ran to the other end of the house to bark from a safe distance! 🤣 She wouldn't go into that part of the house for 2 weeks unless I was with her, and every strange noise brought her immediately to her feet with a single frightened bark each time. At least her big, booming barks scared off the burglar. She even once tried to hide behind my legs when an aggressive miniature Doberman wanted to start a fight with her. 😄

Well, when a dog sleeps with you - it just means they're bonded to you, its one of their ways of showing love and a sense of safety. While I don't have three dogs sleeping with me - but I have two Malinois who do (always had two, a male and female, since I was little kid), wake up every morning with one (or both) of em leaning against me with all four feet in the air. They don't do what the dogs in this video do either. They sleep next to me till I wake up (they don't get off the bed or move around like these in the vid do). And if they're waking me up its because they need to go out. And they know when I'm about to go to bed. I take a shower every night before bed, soon as I turn the shower off - they immediately head to their spots on my bed and wait for me to get settled in.

@@glennalan unfortunately I rent and live with my uncle. Hopefully he’s planning on getting another dog soon but with my cousin living in the basement with their cat I have to just assume him never staying still while sleeping is a just “I want to check on everyone in my “Herd” (all of us in the house.) and even as a puppy he has shown he wanted to patrol to make sure everyone who lives here is still in the house before returning to me and my bedroom. I digress, my friend worry was I spent a year alone with him as a puppy sleeping on the floor with him, and I’ve been concerned for a long time the reason he won’t stay sleeping on my bed (when I shut the bedroom door) is because he didn’t have enough space or didn’t like sleeping in my bed with me, but as shown in the video it’s probably just more of the “shepherd/sentry” traits they have.
