We had a shepherd when i was a kid and he would make his patrol rounds through the house checking on everyone and would lay at the top of the stairs. There was no better security than that dog...lived to be 16 and went peacefully in his sleep of pure old age

We had a shepherd mix when I was a kid. We lived in a cape cod, where my parent's bedroom was downstairs, and out bedrooms were upstairs. If we all went to bed before my father was home, she would sleep at the bottom of the stairs until he got home. Once he was home, she'd come upstairs and sleep in our room. I came to a few conclusions about her actions. 1. My father represented security 2. The bottom of the stairs was a central point of access to the bedrooms. If anyone broke into the house (not likely), they'd have to go past her to get to us. 3. Once Dad was home, she could relax, and come upstairs for a good night's sleep Best dog in the world. They were trying to wake her up pacifistically so they don’t get blamed. They know exactly what they are doing. So when she wakes up it’s like “oh your up well since your up and we absolutely did not wake you up can we go outside” highly intelligent dogs.

I love this! I have three huskies, and I get so many comments from people on a daily basis, about how crazy it is being a single person with three dogs. Edit 12/16/23 wife's cousin had oops litter and is giving away puppies. Picked 3 last night, will have new dogs February first. My dad was smart to adopt an austrailian shepherd mix while i was growing up. That dog was a bit like another mom to me. when i had my twin bed her favorite spot was under the bed, never thought about how hidden she was when youre kid-sized. She was a protector from start to finish, miss that dog.

I live in Florida and we just had some hurricanes. Our 7 month old Newfypoo spent the storm curled up in our bed with us while our 9 year old GSD maintained a vigil by the window to make sure that the storm didn’t breach the house. GSD simply refused to sleep until the storm passed and then proceeded to bark her head off at everyone who passed by or was cleaning up storm damage. Didn’t want to eat, didn’t want to sleep; she just patrolled and guarded. She finally slept for about 15 straight hours once everything settled down the next night. I did not teach her this; she just instinctively decided that we were her charges and it is job to keep us safe. I love that dog more than my own life.

Not unusual for younger dogs. They sleep more than humans but typically break it up throughout the day. Even my senior dog who spends most of her day sleeping wakes frequently through the night and changes spots.

she apparently does, shes almost asleep for 10 hours. Since dogs seem to require about 12, they don't usually sleep all at once. It's really bad to sleep that long. Most people get cranky but then others develop an energy loss if they don't get 10 hours of sleep. I am just amazed they didn't need to go the bathroom

I have two Malinois: I go to bed at night, they're curled up next to me, I wake up in the morning, they're still curled up next to me (the male against my back, the female against the back curve of my legs). They don't roam around at night, they sleep all night on the bed next to me and don't get moving until I get up (then they both pile into the bathroom outside my shower as I get ready for the day).

My wife and I have owned three sets of GDS over the last 21 years. All well trained and all over 95lbs. The largest was Named Ranger at 125lbs. We never locked our doors at nite. They always slept in our bedroom at nite, sometimes on our bed. They were part of our family. They are all gone now . The last one passed last March. My wife still gets very emotional and misses them dearly everyday. There is know other dog like them. When people would ask us what kind of dogs we owned, we would say, we don’t have dogs, we have GDS’s.

Yes best friends forever. We had 4 dogs growing up. In the night each one of them guard the 4 corners of the house. They stayed steadfast to their posts. During the community riots, the attackers running, shouting in the streets @ night. Our faithful, endearing dogs kept silent & still. Ever vigilant to protect us. Love them.

When I was a teenager we had a dalmatian. So cute and naughty but a horrible security dog 😂. We got robbed twice. Then we got our rottweiler and that was that. They had puppies, we kept one and now we had one and a half rottweilers. No more break-ins! It was awesome. My parents now have the best alarm, a small but yippy coton de tulear. The slightest sound and you're up because...barking.

Mine never barked unless it was GO time. He would patrol silently, creep, hunt, and when he confirmed it was on, he was viciouswith his bark. He would never attack, but I also never saw anyone do anything but freeze with hands up. He loved the window, and when the mail guys would show, he would do a deep stomach growl until they left. My best friend of any creature on earth. Got me through the hardest times and gave me the best of times.
