When Ajahn Brahm says: good enough = contentment with existing conditions, always be happy and pozitive with what you already have. When anyone else says it:you might be right..

"Good enough" = 2nd best. Yeah, that's how I hear it too. It rationalizes apathy, torpor, and where it reigns is over-population, disease, unhygenic conditions, exploitation of the vulnerable, social oppression, squalor, inescapable caste systems, etc. NOT insulting, these are observable facts over 2,500 years. It cures no plague, eases no suffering (rather, seeks primarily to submit to it), and builds nothing around us you can call "improvement" because even that word is anti-thetical to Buddhist philosophy which still strikes me as not very life affirming, when human "Life" is seen as a negative state from birth because of Need which, afaict, is the condition that leads to Suffering. So, "better" is post-mortem rather than Now. :/ I do enjoy his talks though :) 🙏 His point about being in a "negative" (human, please) state of mind and feeling irritable, I do think when it arises there is resistance to it, internally. Which maybe intensifies the situation rather than dialing it down. So his saying to acknowledge and accept it is much different than invoking an iron will to combat it. Much different, and I think when possible, his take on it is better. It might reduce the internal struggle to overcome it, (which has more Stoic roots I think), and so it might abate faster and with the potential of figuring out what precisely is triggering it. "Forewarned is forearmed." :P

You are right, Phoenix when you say that Buddhism is found where there is overpopulation, disease, social oppression and injustice.... yet it is also found in societies where there is complete social freedom, great healthcare, every material means of fulfillment and comfort! Why? Maybe its because the Buddha was never a social reformer - what he taught instead was self- realization, which is the only way for any individual to truly find happiness. Buddhist philosophy empowers any person, regardless of life circumstances and external conditions to find true meaning and happiness. At its core, Buddhism is about rational self-examination and self discovery- a practical CBT of sorts. That is how it can help anyone, from the dispossessed Tibetan refugee to a Hollywood celebrity, understand and come to terms with his or her life. Of course, as is true of everything good, humans just cannot resist commercializing things! So, over the centuries, monks have added rituals and chants - which you don't have to do (but it might help!?!) and so a religion develops... which in its externalities, may have nothing much to do with the original teachings. And in our present day modern era, every few years a new self help guru comes along, rehashes and repacks a few of the original teachings and markets it as a unique approach (Must buy..This could save your life!?!) with paid training programs, meditation camps etc ... Such is the nature of life... and Buddhism, practiced as the Buddha originally taught, can help anyone make sense of it, come to terms with it and find happiness - in the here and now.

Kabir Bakshi Thanks for the thoughtful reply Bakshi. I hope I didn't come off too harsh. You brought up some very valid points. Thank you 😊
