@Ne Ws ... Are you saying that your government has let the virus spread all over the country and let people get sick and even die in order to wreck the economy? What is your point? Your 'money' comments don't make any sense ... Please hide your stupidity for your own sake. You know what, all governments are obligated to protect the taxpayers' money and their people. It is THEIR JOB. Dude.

@Ne Ws ...I understand what you are trying to say, but I have to tell you this. Trump didn't take any action 2 months ago because he didn't want to wreck the US economy by scaring the US people before his election. Everyone in the world knows that Trump values money more than anything. That's why he wants to reopen the US economy even under the most serious situation - The number of US cases will exceed 1M in a week or 2 - again, Trump values money more than anything. Korean government has set up emergency measures years ago. We are just doing everything according to our manuals. Actually most of Korean people are surprised and even shocked to see what is happening in the US and other countries around the world, especially the countries that are known as 'advanced countries' . It is not about money. Our systems are just working based on our emergency plan. If our government had valued money, they would have done the same thing as what the US and Japan did, because this pandemic started right before our parliamentary election. Our government could have hidden all the facts to win the election if they wanted to, but our government just transparently implemented all the necessary emergency measures in order to protect its people from the virus. It is simple. This is what Korean people expect from our government. This pandemic should not be about politics - it should be all about saving lives.

I don't think we can condemn the US government by comparing it to a country that has gone through the SARS outbreak in 2003 and MERS outbreak in 2015. Clearly South Korea is well prepared and equipped from their two tragic experiences. Hopefully the US will be better prepared like South Korea should another outbreak/pandemic happens due to Chinese Communist Party's cover-ups and negligence.

I think leadership is one of very important factors in this situation. Just 5 years ago, Korean health and safety system was terrible and most of Korean knew why. The former president Park always put her political interest prior to human right, health and safety. She didn't know how to respond against pandemic virus. Rather, she just made her effort to hide her government's lack of ability. USA was not that much vulnerable country just few years ago. But it seems like US is the most vulnerable country in the world for now. As I see, leadership is the significant difference between two periods.

During this pandemic, we are seeing the incompetence, dishonesty, and failures of governments and leaders from democratic countries, while countries with seemingly more authoritarian governments are succeeding in containing the spread of Covid-19 without needing to shut down the economy, such as South Korea, North Korea, and several African countries, while countries such as China, United States, Italy, and United Kingdom are failing. Does this sound familiar? It should because it's a near exact repeat of the failure of democratic countries during the Great Depression, where France, Britian, and the United States had peak unemployment and destroyed economies, while authoritarian countries such as the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan were able to restore their economies and put people to work and defeat the Great Depression.

They are well-prepared for this * South Korea has one of the highest densities of surveillance technology in the world. * South Korea had one of the world’s highest phone ownership rates (there are more phones than people). * South Korea has the highest proportion of cashless transactions in the world What I've mentioned above enabled SoKor to Test Trace Treat, to avoid panic buying, for students to study online etc. They've fought with SARS and MERS before

I am still so pissed at how the Korean government acted at the beginning (partly, the trace/track part was good). Sorry for my rough phrasing. But it's true - the government may seem to have been doing the best they can at first glance, but I live in South Korea with many of my family members who are in the medical field. There would have been no sudden surge of the virus in Daegu had the government shut down its border with China to begin with - many people were demanding that the government do this, but the government refused because of the political/economical damage it can bring to Korea - which I think was a terrible idea since public health is arguably more important. So even when the infected numbers in Korea were slowly hiking up the curve there were many Chinese tourists that still roamed our streets that could have very well been carriers of the virus. (disclaimer - I am not blaming the Chinese people as a whole because I genuinely have many positive opinions for the country but it isn't smart around this time to go traveling with the virus rampant.) Thus the sudden spike in cases began, and panic ensued. With the exponential increase of patients, the burden of taking care of the sick went solely on the medical staff. Kudos to them, because literally entire medical staffs, a lot of whom gathered to help in Daegu, the hotspot of the outbreak, have been napping away their fatigue in hospital benches and working 15 hours a day voluntarily to save our people. And numbers increased and increased, and the government still didn't close borders until it was too late and didn't matter anymore because, from their perspective, Korea was holding up well - but at the expense of the quality of life of their medical professionals, which they knew and looked away to let the burden fall on them. Think of it this way. You leave a tap open with running water. It's beginning to flood your sink a little. The logical choice is to close the tap. But figuratively, what the government did is order a servant (medical professionals) to mop up the water, and because more water has been flooding out of the sink, the servant has to mop it up faster and faster and faster, and the government, in turn, gets showered with recognition. A quick word about the medical system in Korea. It was constructed by the 8th and 9th president, Park Chung-hee (Who, ironcally, the current president tends to villainize). He put excessive effort into lowering doctor’s bills, along with other great, undeniable economic growth in the 1970s, which gave Korea the great affordable healthcare it has right now. Consequently, doctors in Korea can’t afford to accept an average of 20 patients a day because of this law, like in America. Doctors in Korea take anywhere from 50-200+ patients per day in order to compete in the medical system. So a major part of why we have passed our peak so “easily” is simply because our doctors and nurses are so conditioned to overwork themselves. Have you seen that in the news anywhere? It’s sad.

The only thing South Korean government doesn't listen to expert: Medical staffs "We are exhausted. There are only limited amounts of medical supplies. We should close borders." Government "No, closing the border doesn't matter." People "Tell the truth. If you are true, why does tens of countries lock down their borders?" Government "Actually, we need to win the election in April 15th."

Well, I'm the one who's not on the government's side, but still I can understand why we should keep the borders open. We are currently at the point of nation-wide economic catastropy besides of the virus. And sadly, Korea has been drastically dependent on trade, which needs the gate open. It's a good point you mentioned about doctor's fatigue dealing with the virus, and this kind of sacrifice has somewhat been forced by the authorities and ppl. What we must remember is that this curve has been made by the great effort of them, and we gotta treat tham in a right way.
