I can SO relate! I had a "needed to be signed for" delivery to a truly rural (members of Grange) family on my rural route years ago. I'm waiting for Mrs. Edwards to just sign the slip, and she keeps stopping to complain about the "flood control" plans of the local government, that her daughters hadn't come by to help with preparations for Daddy's birthday celebration, etc. etc. Bless their hearts! People like that don't exist anymore!

I now live in East TN. I moved down from CT about 8 yrs ago, just 45mins outside of New York city. In that part of the world, most people are pretty direct, myself included. We're not mean, we just call em like we see em. In my first year living and working down here in TN, I heard through the grape vine that people thought that I was rude. It caught me by surprise, because I'd never been told I was rude before! Up north, most people thought I was very cordial and a straight shooter. I've tried to change my communication method to suit the south, but honestly, I'll always be a straight shooter and never will I beat around the bush. It's not in my nature. People down here that know me have learned that what comes out of my mouth is the truth and have learned to respect me for it. I mean what I say, and I say what I mean. Flowers and sugar just leads to a lot of misunderstandings.

I've always figured that "Bless your heart" was just shorthand for/the start of the phrase, kinda like "If wishes were fishes [we'd walk on the sea]" or "pot meet kettle" (pot calling the kettle black) only it's "[God] bless your heart [because you ain't got NOTHIN' else going for ya]" which could mean God gave you good heart because he skipped you in the brain department or the world just isn't working out for you right now. Or when said with clenched teeth, "I'm trying to remind myself NOT to stop your heart right now because it is all you have. And it is not nice to take from those with the least"

As a woodworker and remodeler in the deep South, I can firmly say that half of the time people hire my services not for the work that I do, but to have my ear while discussing everything from the gout in their feet, their children, the weather, what and where they ate for their last 17 meals, and perhaps the design of the project, reasons why they hate a particular color, how their current car is way less reliable than the last one they had, and even where the lint under their refrigerator came from (true fact). All why I'm standing there waiting on a check so I can get to my next appointment to repeat the same cycle. There are times when being bilingual is an advantage... such as only speaking English in a Spanish speaking home (hardly ever works) or vice versa (this one works most of the time!)

As transported New Yorker, I can say I found out quick that "Bless your heart" has many meanings and is situational. Meaning depends on who's offering the heart blessing. They could range from everything from an "aww" to 'Oh just screw you" to a flat out with intent "F you" Gotta love Southern slang stuffs

I came from the lower Midwest as a tiny child and learned Southern with enough of an outsider's view that I figure that "Bless your Heart" is just the part said out loud, the silent part is "Becasue you ain't got nothing else going for you." This works in everything from "sorry things aren't going your way" to "you got a good heart but you don't have the sense that God gave a squirrel" to a self reminder that you are supposed to love your enemies, even when you want them to F off.

For anybody not Southern, you can get the idea from the internet that "bless your heart" is always an insult. It is not. "Bless" is essentially the polite f-word: it can be use extremely positively as well as negatively, and is often used as an intensifier. Your spouse saying, "I want to f- your brains out right now" is certainly not negative (assuming it is said to you). "Bless your heart" can mean, "I love and support you" just as much as anything else. It is context and speaker dependent. My mother used to say, "God Bless America" instead of "God D--n it." "Oh, bless!" can be "my heart goes out to them" and also, "we need to get the heck out of here! NOW!" Like the f-word, it is amazingly flexible and useful. God bless y'all!

@@BravoSeven Illinois isn't the Deep South. Potato candy is mashed potatoes with sugar, vanilla and some other stuff the 'chef' wants to waste. Baloney or ham salad is one of the two meats chopped into half inch cubes or ground to the consistency of potted meat or somewhere in between then mixed with chopped hard boiled eggs, sweet pickle relish and Miracle Whip if your lucky. It is served as a sandwich or with sliced tomatoes on a bed of iceberg lettuce crackers on the side. W. Indie is chopped raw onions and lump crab usually layered in a serving dish and seasoned vinaigrette. Not my jam. To be transparent about the bologna salad I prefer Troyer's Trail Balogna. It's a lightly smoked ring sausage. From Ohio. First cut a 3"-4" section and then slice it length wise into two equally sized pieces. Grill this a few minutes on a low heat, put it on a warm burger bun with Swiss cheese, German mustard, a dash of hot sauce and choose your other condiments. It's a great bologna salad.

True story; born and raised in a suburb of Detroit. I moved to Nashville in the mid to late 90s. Dated a man from exact same background once in Nashville. We'd go to the store and get in line behind folks who were aquainted and or knew the person in front of us and would wait roughly seven minutes for those folks to finish a conversation as the line grew longer and longer behind us. The man I dated coined the phrase "How's your mama syndrome". I still laugh about it today. That said, I was raised to have good manners and have worked in the service industry. I'm always kind to the folks who take care of me. I make eye contact, am polite, thank them and say have a good day. It doesn't take seven minutes.

Dude, I'm just laughing my butt off over here. This is so freaking accurate. The only slight difference I know of is when, in reference to the bad food, you said, "Mmm, that's interesting." My mom always uses the word "different." She's so stuck with eating her one or two things always, that God forbid she ever try something else. I was bred & raised in the South. Once was married to someone from the Midwest who fortunately was a quick study so would translate to friends. One of the things he’d tell them was the madder I got, the heavier my accent & if it reached a point you couldn’t understand….RUN!!
