1:20 = 80 minutes. Using a rate table, half of each is 75mph in 40 min., half that is 37.5 in 20 minutes. So 40 minutes + 20 minutes = 60 minutes ( 1 hour) and 75 mph + 37.5 mph = 112.5 mph. No need to memorize a formula.

Rate x Time = Distance, so here the rate is distance 150 miles divided by time 80 minutes x 60 (miles per hour).

Huh! I got the right answer but didn't trust that it was right. There are 3 20 minute segments in an hour, & 4 20 minute segments in an hour & 20 minutes, and the distance to be travelled is 150 miles, so i divided 150 by 4 to get 37.5, then multiplied 37.5 by 3 (the number of 20 minute segments in an hour) and got 112.5. I didn't believe that was the mph because i can't explain my logic to myself. It's hurting my brain & is going to bother me 'til I understand it.

1 hour and 20 minutes is 80 minutes. 150 miles in 80 minutes is equal to 1.875 miles per minute (150/80). So in mph it is 1.785 miles/ minutes x 60 minutes/hour (1.875/80* 60) = 112.5 mph.

I suppose you have to know the concept the problem is illustrating. Otherwise: 3 simple steps... 150 miles per 80 minutes. ==>1.887 miles per minute ==> 1.887 miles per minute multiplied by 60 Minutes per hour ==> 112.5 miles per hour. It is not really algebra but simple arithmetic just an exercise in keeping track of units. As I recall a very important concept NASA messed up and crashed a space probe.

@devonwilson5776 Жыл бұрын
Greetings. The answer is 112.5 MPH. First, we need to recognize 1 hour and 20 minutes is the same as 80 minutes. Now, using D=VT, we can plug in the values for the distance covered and the time taken to have traveled that distance. However, we also need to covert minutes to hours by dividing 80 by 60 to get 8/6. That gives 150= V8/6 MPH. Moving forward, we have 8V=900 after multiplying both sides by 6, and V=900/8 MPH= 112.5 MPH.

Isn't this a bit high for a medium speed in the US? Shouldn't you use better numbers so fractions do work simply and the result should be something real like 55-65 miles per hour.
