If you ever thought about doing a second channel for psychology of video games, might I recommend Psychonaughts, a game where you can hop into the minds of the characters and literally fight their demons, literally sort out their emotional baggage, with the levels and game mechanics being used to explain their psychology, Sasha Nein is very composed, so his mind is compressed to a cube that could launch memories and experiences out when that composer breaks, in Milla Vodello’s mind, it’s very bright and bubbly (literally), but in a little corner, you can see her trauma, and in the famous Milkman Conspiracy level, you go into the mind of a paranoid conspiracy theorist, trash cans take pictures of you when you aren’t looking, there are G-men pretending to be road crew workers or plumbers, and going into buildings put you in the perspective of hidden cameras, you could do an entire series JUST on the characters of the psychonaughts games

It is a game, rather than a movie, but a series on the many characters of Psychonaughts would be really cool, in the games, you can literally hop into the minds of the characters and see the physical representation of their inner world, where you can help them by literally sorting out emotional Baggage, and defeating their nightmares, there is enough amazing levels to make a full series of analysis videos for each character, from Milkman Conspiracy, to psi-king’s sensorium, that franchise is an untapped gold mine of content

Alan, I'd like to share a story with you. Speed Racer came out mother's day weekend. My mom grew up watching and enjoying Speed Racer. I'd seen the cartoon and didn't care for it. However, I knew the movie was coming out, so I decided to take my mom to see it; going to the movies was often an activity we enjoyed sharing together. It was opening weekend and the only, and I mean literally *only*, people in the theater were my mother, me, another mother, and her young son that I'd guess was approximately eight years old. They sat right next to us which miffed me a bit; the theater was empty they could've sat anywhere else. So, here I am about to watch a movie for which I have negative expectations... and I was ensorcelled *immediately*. The first race had me hooked. I was so utterly enchanted by the movie's visuals and story telling and writing that I was completely wrapped up in all of it, and it turns out that I wasn't the only one. During the final race of that movie, all four of us, in an otherwise completely empty movie theater, had the complete movie theater experience. It was like every moment carried the same weight as Captain American picking up Mjolnir on opening night. All four of us gasped and cried and clapped throughout the race. All four of us audibly wept during the moment of transcendence and during that final stretch, the moment you were talking about the score intermingling with the sound design, that moment of perfect cinema... all four of us literally jumped out of our theater seats and were screaming at the screen for Speed to cross the finish line; we were steam filled pipes with no release valve and to the point of breaking. When Speed defeats the other two racers and barrels into the checkered finish line... I do not have a means to convey the amount of energy and jubilation. I turned to that eight year old boy and he turned to me and we both had smiles on our faces and tears running down our cheeks. I can't begin to recall how many times he and I high fived. It was truly the best theater experience I've ever had in my entire life; me and my mom bonded with those two over that shared experience. I have shown Speed Racer to many, many friends and expressed my love for it. I have not shown it to a single person who has come close to feeling the way I do about it; most people finish the movie and say, "it was alright." I feel very validated seeing how much you care for the movie. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy imagining my mom and I parading around like idiots, standing up in the middle of a movie, with complete strangers. There are few things as wonderful as being truly moved by a story.

Seeing Alan's reaction to the end of this film is so rewarding for me as someone who's adored it since I was a child. My dad, who watched the original cartoon growing up, lost his job during the 2008 recession and I remember he let my brother and me skip school to watch Speed Racer in theaters with him. Even as a kid, I left the theater euphoric. I'm so glad this movie is finally getting praised--long overdue!

A few years ago I brought this movie to a "guilty pleasure" movie night me and my friends were having. I felt like I needed to warn them about the cheesiness, the absolute disregard for anything resembling realism and the unending kaleidoscope of trippy colors and visuals. It's definitely not a "normal movie" By the end my friends just turned to me and asked "what's so guilty about this one?" That's when I realized I wasn't weird for being so attached to this movie, its emotional core is a universal experience and the final race hits everyone. I love this movie so much it's unreal

So refreshing to see the “you’re not my son/don’t ever come back” trope played straight, but then revisited as a lesson and growth moment for the characters. Usually that trope is included to try to ramp up the drama, but then everyone just makes up 20 minutes later, and there are no long-lasting effects. In Speed Racer, the film ends with Pops still believing he ruined his relationship with his oldest son, who then went on to die without his family to back him up. So that’s a mistake he’s never going to make again.

I know this is a movies & therapy channel, but I have to say that the final race in Speed Racer is the peak of race design in movies. You see the sequence of the obstacles and scenes within the previous laps. The whole thing is a rule of three. You don't need to know the exact sequence to know that through each obstacle you're getting closer to the end each time we pass one. Each one is so distinct that you become familiar with it at a glance. And on the final lap you're blown away so many times so quickly that you can't even think about which ones are left but you know the end is getting closer with each one that passes. You know there's a limit and you've seen all of them before, in the same order. Perfect sequence, no notes. There is no single lap race sequence that comes anywhere close to it.

I love to see people properly appreciate Speed Racer. Between this and the V for Vendetta movie I'd argue that the Wachowskis may be unmatched when it comes to their adaptions of comics. NOT because their adaptions are slavishly accurate, because they are absolutely not, but because they make smart choices about what to keep and what to change to still capture the heart of the original in a way suited to the medium of film.

They also have great skills/instincts for capturing and translating the visual style of a graphic novel. The framing, color, poses, dialogue, timing, etc. Think about the sequence on the roof in The Matrix, where Neo almost dodges the agent’s bullets, and then Trinity head-shots the agent while he’s distracted. You could take stills from that sequence, add word balloons, and it would read perfectly as a graphic novel.

I've been mocking Trinity for years, holding a gun to an AGENT'S head, saying "dodge this", and waiting several seconds to pull the trigger. He would indeed have dodged that. But when imagining it in comic form, panel by panel, it's suddenly a perfect moment. Knowing that they were trying to capture that feeling helps me get into exactly the right mindset to appreciate it for what it is, instead of chiding it for not being what I expected it to be. (It was good-natured chiding, mostly, but I still vastly prefer this) Also the bullet-time slowdowns make more sense now too.

So Speed Racer is oddly important to my family. My dad grew up on the old cartoon, my little brother watched the new cartoon, and we all watched this movie. Our dynamic was incredibly similar to pops, speed, and Rex as well, including the repeated storming out. Hell, I showed this once to my now fiance, and she went from eye rolling to crying at the end. It's not just over the top. It's not just way over the top. It's way over, over the top. It was so visually and auditorily overstimulating. Imagine being on the best, most thrilling, most brilliant, genius level designed, frightening but-still-enjoyable roller-coaster in the world. The experience of the roller coaster is perfectly designed to last 5 minutes, and that 5 minutes... chef's kiss. Now imagine being on that same roller coaster for over 2 hours. Easily one of my favourite movies. Every little detail is thought of and appreciated. Heck Speed was going so fast in the finale that his tires are melting and you can see them dripping onto the finish line! Just a perfect movie. A perfect adaption. And a showcase of how live-action films can take anime aspects, such as speed lines and editing techniques, and make a movie even better. Just incredible.

Like Alan, like this movie is in my Top 5 of all time, one of the greatests. I will always claim that this movie has one of the best opening 15 minutes of any film. In the first 5 minutes, we see the visual extremes this movie will carry for the rest of the watch time, the character's personalities and relationships, a TON of back story and set up to the dynamics. Personally, no other movie in my eyes, sets up the vibes as hard as this one. I remember being like 4 or 5 years old and watching the old reruns of the original cartoon on tv, this movie may not be a perfect adaptation, but it adapts the FEELING of the show, it emulates how I think I remember it, and for what its worth, I think it comes out so much stronger for that than if it was a "perfect" adaptation, its perfect in its own way.

Part of why this movie works so hard its because the whole thing is so saturated and pumped to 11 that anything less than pure genuine love for the characters inside of their world, wouldn't be enough. When the red and white fills the screen at the end I find that I am usually in tears and holding my breath everytime, and right on cue every time, when the car lets out a sigh, so do I. I bought Speed Racer as a final purchase as Blockbuster was going out of business. I nabbed it for $3, but i'd go back in time and pay $1,000 for how much joy this movie has brought me. I showed it to everyone I knew in college. I make my wife and kids watch it annually. It truly is one of the best films ever made and the ending closes the film so perfectly that there truly is nothing left to be asked. This movie does what it was supposed to do, and it does it without asking for anything from us except to enjoy.

The people who say they didn't like this movie NEED to revisit it again and just find the unbridled joy of it being so, so, SO ALIVE. I watched it with my friends a few years ago, thinking it was going to be a little schlocky. Instead, I entered a world full of brightness, bombastic action, dreamlike insanity, and weirdly enough--hope. Two hours later I came out feeling the most energized and inspired to find similar joys in life again. We all loved it, and we were practically cheering and singing the theme song together by the end of the night. And what I'd give to witness Alan and Jono reacting to some of the vintage episodes of the original anime 😂😂 Speed was an absolute MENACE in every way that's delightful!

Can I just say how utterly SEEN I feel seeing your reactions to and opinions of this movie? I found a DVD of this movie in a Blockbuster Sale bin before they closed almost two decades ago, and I figured 'hell, why not. Its like $5, itll be good for a laugh'. I brought it home, put it on my shelf and ignored it for two years. And then I watched it a and immediately realized that I loved this movie so intensely and more intimately than most other movies I've watched in my life. The incredible action scenes, the on point comedy & pacing, the genuine and beautiful dynamics of the Racer family, the transcendent film-making... and everytime I introduce this film to other people they always say 'how is this the first time I've watched this'? Thank you, Alan. Thank you for defending this genuine gem that Hollywood buried and that most folks just kinda forgot. I still well up to this day watching that scene. Thank you, Jonathan. Thank you for pointing out how beautiful and heartfelt and real the loving family dynamic is here. If I could become half the father that Pops Racer is, Ill be honored. You both rock 💕

Never understood the hate for this movie, its such a beautifully done movie and pays the best homage to the original cartoon. Favorite scene by far is when Speed refires the car and hes flying through the pack and you get the montage of characters, always loved the line "It doesn't matter if racing never changes. What matters is if we let racing change us.", and the part that always tugs at my heart strings is when they do that flashback and its Speed and Pops watching the race and Pops is talking about how it "just clicked". My dad and I, when I was growing up, we never saw eye to eye on basically anything, still don't, but the one thing we always enjoyed together was racing whether it was NASCAR or IndyCar, on TV or in-person, we always took time to watch a race together and thats something I'll always cherish with my dad.

The thing that I've noticed a lot of people missed about this movie is that it isn't only a great film shot precisely and worked on with passion, it's not only a speed racer movie, it's also a Hot Wheels movie. The tracks and the cars, and even the emotion. It reminds me a lot about acceleracers. Great directors, great action, fantastic visuals, an homage to both speed racer and Hot Wheels. This movie has so much to offer, and when I first saw it in theaters with only me and my date seated (sadly enough), I felt exactly what Allen did throughout this whole movie and even more so at the ending. Years later I'm so happy it's getting the recognition it deserved. Speed racer the move was ahead of its time.

People complaining about how “unrealistic” it is clearly didn’t watch the original cartoon. It’s wacky and the directors for this film leaned into the anime aspect to infinity & beyond!! I still get nostalgic and tear up every time. I caught all the references to the cartoon like the same sound effects and the car gadgets.

I'm sending this video to my film professor because he is a Speed Racer: Perfect Film DENIER. I bring up this movie in our filmmaking classes all the time partially to annoy him as a joke but also because I genuinely think there are so many perfect examples of different masterclass applications of film techniques and stylistic choices. I absolutely agree that this is one of the best movies of all time and it's in my top 5 as well. @@izzyj.1079 I thought I explained: it's a sort of Uncanny Valley effect, where the ultraclean environments and saturated pure colors clash with the existence of live-action actors. It doesn't create the sense that the world we're watching could exist even on its own terms. People were blown away by the spaceships in *Star Wars* because they were grungy and looked like real, used objects.

@@Matt42MSG That sounds like a suspension of disbelief problem. It's a live-action adaptation of a 60s anime, why would you expect the effects to look realistic? Trying to do so would just undermine its adherence to the source material. On the contrary, the current effects stand way the hell out from other live action films. Star Wars, by contrast, is trying to sell a world where space fascism reigns supreme, and the heroes are fighting with limited scavanged resources from backwater worlds; it wouldn't make sense for that world to be clean. And the places that do, liek the Death Star, are pretty clean and synthetic.

The final race is one of the GREATEST moments I ever witnessed on the big screen and I'd give anything to witness it again. Not only is the story great but the atmosphere is UNAPOLOGETICALLY anime and I will always love it for that. SUPER happy to see someone appreciate Speed Racer as much as I do. It's still my favorite live action adaptation.

Couldn't agree more! I was never a fan of this particular anime, but I immediately LOVED this movie. It's profoundly clear that this was a passion project and a love letter, not some project the Wachowskis were handed or took on as a lucrative prospect only to crank out garbage. They respected the crap out of this source material, and it really, REALLY shows. Heart and soul was put into this. The climax still gives me goosebumps. And the credits song is still SO dang fun.

I agree with Alan, Speed Racer is a top 5 movie! Another thing I’d add for a characteristic is boldness. During the final race, Speed is thinking of what Royalton was saying, but not in a negative way. Yes, Royalton may be right about racing being rigged but, Speed is believing that it doesn’t matter. Speed loves racing, always has always will. He’s boldly saying I love what I do and I don’t care if others use racing for profit or gain. No one will tell me if I win or lose, I will race because I love it.

I've always loved the friendship between these two. And yet, in this one you can see exactly the moment when Alan shoots Jono straight through the heart, when he tells him "I've been so proud of you before" and Jono just freezes for a sec and then closes his eyes and let's it in. And I think that's absolutely beautiful. CT is wonderful, has always been. But to let us share a bit of the true marvel and miracle that your friendship is... That's something else. This movie holds a special place in ny heart. I went to see this with my dad when i was 12. My mom and my sister were on one of those all day fieldntrips, so it was just me and him spending the day together, and i was stoked. Now,he didnt like it because he's a huge fan of the original show and a bit of a purist. But i remember watching this in awe of the visuals, it was hypnotizing. Despite the fact that i spent the next two hours in a TGI Fridays listening to my dad lament over the ruin of his childhood show, its still my favorite memory of him 😂

This movie is also one of my top 5. It makes me happy to see that others love it as much as I do. I think one of my favorite movie making moments is the scene where Speed, X, and Trixie are on the S curves after the reveal that she's the third driver and the camera and effects transitions between the three having the conversation. Its so smooth, they are still acting out going around the corners cause you can see the wheels and the cars as they're popping back and forth. Incredible. This also leads to one of my favorite "combat" scenes where Snake puts his wheel in Trixie's face and Speed absolutely dumpsters him with what I can only describe as righteous fury. Its funny, thinking about it, obviously noone dies, but very few corrupt drivers' vehicles survive an encounter with Speed Racer on the track. Speed almost makes a point of it, to trash anyone's vehicle who's actively trying to crash him out. Other drivers, he'll dodge, jump over, etc. But the best example is the final two. He might've just been able to blaze past them, but he made SURE they were gonna DNF that Grand Prix. He's almost elemental, with the way hes a hurricane on four wheels that leaves corrupt drivers in their bubble balls in his wake.

This was my comfort movie during the darkest time in my life around 2008. For a few years Id get home from the graveyard shift i worked, drink some whiskey or eat oreos and watch this every morning until i fell asleep. I worked 10 hours a day plus it being graveyard shift made it nearly impossible to manage friends, and I was also ostracized from my family for being a lesbian. Ive been afraid to rewatch this over the last decade because of how intertwined it was with my depression back then. Thank you for reminding me why I originally loved Speed Racer and also explaining how it comforted me back then. Keep up the amazing work guys 💜

I had never actually seen this movie before, but last weekend--literally two days ago--my best friend was in the mood to re-watch it, and he asked me if I wanted to come over and join him. I'm so glad I did; what an underrated gem this turned out to be. Pops ended up being my favorite character, not because he was played by John Goodman--though that always helps--but for exactly that scene in the living room with Speed. He could have remained the overbearing "what I say, goes" type, but instead he learned from his mistake and really showed up for Speed. The character growth he displayed and the positive, healthy family dynamic he modeled were inspiring. Great film, great character.

Since I saw this movie, if someone asks me which is my favorite movie, I always say that it's Speed racer. It's not realistic, a little bit silly, but a masterpiece. The whole reason that I like this movie is that the story itself is so human. Two talented wildly crazy kids, parents who don't always agree with their kids choices and actions and make mistakes and then own up to those mistakes and try to fix them where they can. And the fact that not all choices can be taken back. Rex doesn't take the obviously tempting choice to reunite with his family. And what I like about the scene at the Grand Prix where Speed is stalled out is it shows that even with all his talent and skill he doesn't automatically know how to fix the car and his dad does showing that there's still things that Speed has to learn and situations that he hasn't encountered yet. You also just absolutely feel what both sides are fighting over Speed is fighting for the art that is racing Royalton is fighting for the money that is in racing. I can't ever watch the last bit of the Grand Prix race without feeling choked up and emotional.

I grew up on reruns of the speed racer anime, when this movie hit I loved it. I still do. It translated what I loved about the anime into a live action form. There was a store selling anime themed baseball style shirts and because of this movie I went and picked up the speed racer one. I still have it and wear it to this day and it makes the speed racer fans and other geeky people come up to me and we have a conversation about what brings us joy. This movie brings alot of joy into my life.

This movie is one of, if not my FAVORITE of all time. I remember my first day of school after moving to America, my parents took me to class and I had a Spider-Man backpack on, and a bright yellow nametag with some english letters I didn't quite fully know how to read yet. In my hand was a Speed Racer lunchbox with Speed in the Mach 6 from the finale. I remember how vivid the colors of that lunchbox were and everytime I looked at the image of Speed I would recall how much I loved watching this movie. Movies have always been this comforting existence in my life that I've relied on to get through everything. I can't say how much this channel really means to me, being able to look back at my favorite movies with the both of you every week has been such a privilege.

I remember working at my local movie theater when this movie came out. I was 17. It has stayed with me since I ran the dry run for it. Other co-workers thought it was terrible, as did other audiences, but I saw it as what Alan see's it as too. It's a movie with heart, about family and following your passion. It's just wrapped up in dripping, oozing CG car racing bonanza. I would love to see more cinema like this and Godzilla -1, where good stories are at the forefront, being driven by heart and passion with CG to aid the story. Point. Blank.

I'm with Alan, this movie is hype as sh-t. I laugh, I cry, I get chills. I don't care that that the source material is stupid, in fact, I see that as a plus, it's colorful, it's beautifully shot, the cinematography is fantastic, the energy is insane, the music works so well with it all, the villain is as realistic and despicable as he is entertaining, and the writing and character performances are just so heartfelt and genuine. It's one of my favorites, and it is absolutely the best sports movie.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I watch it every year even as an adult, it's such a wonderful film. All the themes and the character arcs are put together so cleanly, there's no wasted space or scenes. It's an absolutely thrilling ride that hits hard when it slows down and can speak to people of all ages, whether they relate to Spritle, Speed, or Pops and Mom Racer. The storyline with Pops changing how he approaches Speed after what happened to Rex is one of my favourite character arcs to this day, and I love that it teaches boys and men that it's alright to be wrong and to tell your family you love them, just as Trixie and Mom Racer do. And I love that Trixie gets to show off as a driver in her own right!

I kept telling everyone how good it was, but I often was met with remarks about how fake the special effects looked, or how basic the story was.
