I tested my blood glucose before and after eating Oreo cookies and bananas. The video shows the blood sugar impact of eating 2 boxes of Oreo cookies and 3 bananas. Using a continuous glucose monitor, I compare my blood sugar before eating the cookies and the bananas and for a few hours after eating them.

I actually think the increased protein and carbs in the cookies helped too not see a crash. I am gestational diabetec and do great with vanilla ice cream by itself but cannot have fruit by itself because the fat is too low on the fruit.

I’m pre-diabetic and through change in eating and CGM from 6.7 to 5.9 from January I’d like to get under 5.5. I don’t understand the insulin sugar dynamic. It was helpful to hear that there can be a crash when insulin does not have sugar to “eat” as I have been having this experience. I think not enough fat but I don’t know. Your tips are spot on.

Great vid Tom, what type of fast acting insulin are you using? For my whole life i have been using Novalin R which isn't as fast as I like by itself. Was hard to correct spikes in a timely mannor and i always have to take it 1.5hrs before eating if i was planning any carbs at all. Would get kind of low before eating to control my spikes (yeah not good). I asked my Dr for lispro Humalog R to try and it has changed my life! I can take it 5 mins before eating carbs and keep my post meal spikes below 150. And im talking a burger with a bun! which I stayed away from for years! I went from 6.3 A1c to 5.8 A1c with only adding the lispro in with my Novalin and Tresiba. I'm not condoning eating heavy carbs or finding a way to do so, but if somone can lower thier A1c while keeping flatter glucose levels, that I can support!

Good idea for the video. I actually eat a type of long wafers (they come in twos) with chocolate made in Venezuela called Suzy (17g carbs, 9g sugar, 2g protein, 6g fat) before I exercise and I drink a banana shake with either one or two spoonfuls (depending on how low I am) of honey to raise my blood sugar half way through training. I have not ate Bannas for over 30 years now. As a Type one diabetic for greater then 70 years now, the damage to my kidneys are the ONLY REASON I do not ear Bannas. The excessive amount of potassium in Bannas is extremely detrimental to the Kidneys now. So for those people who say "Bannas are not good for diabetics" are only speaking from 1/2 information require to make that statement. This is common for most people who like to take a White Coat word as gospel. People have been spoofed for so long by the "Medical Profession" that they only hear what they want to hear and not really look into the facts. Pardon me but this type of ignorance is very disturbing when I hear it.

That was very interesting! I was betting for the bananas to have better results. I believe that the reason to be lower at first with bananas is because of the way our bodies process the natural sugars on them. It's like drinking squeezed juice from an orange vs. eating the orange. Blood sugar will rise faster with the juice because you just jumped a few steps from the process. (You don't have to chew, swallow, and then digest the orange), the juice goes directly to digest it. Maybe another good experiment could be either lowering the dose a little bit and/or administering the dose right before eating the bananas instead of 15 minutes before. Best wishes, and thank you for all the great information you always give us!! Following you from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷!👍👍

i was experimenting with protein intake over the last two months. Methodology is same amount of carbs and fats but the amount of protein changes. I found out that my blood sugar level slightly increases and stays stable over two hours and then starts to rise after that if i took more protein than i needed or goes down if i take low amount of protein. I am currently trying to gain some weight and protein helps really well. I feel more full for way longer. My last periodic controls were really good. I am healthier than ever. However i increased my basal insulin by 1 unit(15 to 16). I am probably gonna increase it by 1 more unit. I need to eat more :D

Hi! I managed to have straight lines at night with injections only. What works for me, I eat my last meal until 7 PM, nothing with heavy carbohydrates just a light meal. I also had to change the timing of my tresiba injesction, if I gave it in the evening my BG was always low in the morning, now I give it in the morning and this resulted beautiful straights at night. As I experienced my BG is always jumping up by 2-3 mmol/l after I fall asleep, I check it before I'm going to bed and if it is higher than 8 mmol/l I add a unit of rapid acting insulin. This is olny my experience, but maybe you can get some ideas based on it :)
@anitastokar98
@anitastokar98 Жыл бұрын
I used to have high blood sugars when I woke up because I get the "dawn phenomena" (when your body secretes hormones during the hours before you wake up which raise blood sugars. Since getting on a pump, I increase my basal rate starting at about 3:30 a.m. and I wake up with good blood sugars. When on daily injections, I couldn't alter the amount of basal units I get throughout the day. Since you use a CGM, look to see if your sugars rise a few hours before waking. Dawn phenomena is probably the culprit. If your sugar drops at night and then rises, that is a different problem.

In general the insulin pump is not what keeps me in range. It is primarily monitoring and good control/management. Some pumps have algorithms that can improve time in range significatnly but a pump without an algorithm does generally not do much in my humble opinion.

Great video! Fat definitely slows the absorption of glucose. Fortunately, unlike millions of people, I do not crave chocolate and rarely eat it. During the 1970s, I dated a woman who craved chocolate and who was later diagnosed with hypoglycemia. One night before watching a movie, she poured a two-pound bag of m&m’s into a glass bowl. I only had a few and took an extra bolus to cover the carbs. She devoured the rest before the movie was over. Bananas definitely spike my blood sugar. With fruit, ripeness affects the carb count. A soft, ripe 100g banana with black spots on the peel contains significantly more grams of carbs than a harder less-ripe 100g banana.

Nice test. And for me quite an expected result. Your thoughts about fats and proteins in oreos are not completely correct. You are correct that fats and proteins helps to slow digestion of sugars from meals. But that's only one part od that. Metabolics of fats and proteins actually creates glucose in your blood as well. So you have to calculate not only carbs but also fats and proteins to dosing of inzulin as well. That's why blood glucose stayed ok for oreos (you got that dose of insulin right) and with bananas you went to hypoglycemia (high dose for that). Also i would rise hand for bananas as a breakfast but usually I also add some peanut butter for example what slows digestion of sugars and keeps me full a little longer 😉

They probably dont but everybody is different. I bought those ONE Bar protien bars on a whim and they have 20-ish carbs per bar. They didnt spike my sugar really at all, but did extend my time in an elevated range when eating them as a desert, which is kinda what protien does. I dont personally notice that carbs really have much an effect at all on my blood glucose unless I have fats in my meal, in which case carbs can have a big effect on my glucose spikes, but inversely I could simply state fat has a big effect on my glucose instead, which I imagine most protien bars do have fats.

The bananas have fiber and the sugar is not refined. Fiber blunts the spike from the sugar, plus you get a the nutrients. Cookies contain little to no fiber, the entire contents are refined and lack significant nutrients. The fat content might make you feel fuller longer but fiber does that also, and its healthier esp for the gut bacteria.

100% bananas. But as a type 2 they still spike me 60-80 points so I never eat them.

You video is normal thinking. When my sugar is under control. When I eat chocolate cake, cookies or even sugar free candy. That day I consume them, my sugars go up some , but no spike. My trouble the next day, if I have 1 cookie the next day or two, I get massive spikes. Just stating what happens with me. Be careful when consuming foods bad for you.

It’s like if I eat well, my body stores natural insulin. If I eat badly, that stored insulin is used and my sugars are under control for day 1. If I try 6. Cookies 2 days in a row. The second day I will spike more.

I'd guess the spike and drop of the banana are due to the fact that the Oreo's have more fat and thus are digested more slowly?

Those bananas looked yellow, not brown. Brownish ones I’d expect to have more sugar in them.

Tom I loved a lot of what you do and watched you often last summer when my son was diagnosed...but I gotta say this is not very smart. My 10 year old wouldn't touch an Oreo if you put them in front of him. He knows better. Bernstein protocol all the way. Yes he has dessert every night

T1D's shouldn't eat either. Actually non T1D's shouldn't either. There's other sources of potassium without the carbs.

Agreed - most real world T1Ds will spike their BG a lot higher and need a lot more corrective insulin... better to stick to low or no carb.

Why shouldn't a diabetic eat bananas? I eat 1/2 of a small one with peanut butter before exercising and it helps the sugar from dropping too much.

Completely different types of sugar between the two. Nobody should ever consume a mam made oreo cookie. Bananas may spike ur blood but definitely a wiser choice any day. If ur gonna consume anything, have it be natural. Moderation is key in most areas of life. And if u eat ur banana with a healthy peanut butter, it won't spike as much

Assuming your glucose graph was for each test the BEFORW eating both was the biggest influence to your results. The graph for Oreos was trending DOWN, while the banana was trending UP. Also I suspect your second issue is the problem with ALL unprocessed foods.... consistency. There is no way to know what the REAL nutrition values for random fresh foods. You are only guessing the carbs for the bananas. And one test by no means makes a trend or a valid result. All you proved is that your assumptions were wrong.😂😂😂😂😂
