Sweet analysis. It's been ages since watched Steven Universe and back then I didn't realize how much of an Utena-esque character Pearl was. Both Utena and Pearl take up the sword to conform to an established societal ideal: Utena to the ideal of the prince and Pearl to the ideal of the knight. I knew that Steven Universe took some inspiration from Utena, but it's really cool to see that the intertextuality goes beyond just surface level references.

More often than not, a lot more thought goes into a production then people are often willing to consider, let alone give credit for. ...
