Note: Mere hours before this video was supposed to go live, Russia pulled out of the Kharkiv Oblast, Twitter is currently flooded with pictures and videos of celebrating Ukrainian civilians and the sheer level of equipment the Russians left behind, including an entire division of T-80 battle tanks.
The salty, salty tears of the pro-Russia crowd have been amazing to watch.
======
In his worst video ever made LazerPig contemplates what destroyed the Russian cruiser Moskva, what new evidence has come up in light of its sinking, and will we finally solve the mystery of how one of the most powerful warships of our time was destroyed?

If I'm to understand the report correctly they couldn't even serve chow in a semi-heated state most of the time. That suggests they were issued ration kits, probably fairly old ones. Imagine putting a modern crew to sea, then telling them eat antique rations out of waxpaper boxes for an indeterminate time, while the galley itself can't stay a consistent temperature. $10 says you would be beaten half to death with your own shoes before the week was out.

Missile hits the Moskva, in and of itself doesn't do anything, but thanks to any number of other things that may or may not happen over the course of a ship getting hit with a missile, a fire breaks out. From what I've read, the story behind the video at 4:50 is as follows: Some Ukrainian soldiers were bored, and decided to troll Russian media. A bunch of them laid down on the ground, pretending to be dead, and one of them with the camera pretended to be Russian filming all the Ukrainian soldiers they killed in an amphibious river crossing attempt, mocking Russia's own failed attempts to cross rivers. He then intentionally keeps recording as they all get up and laugh. They then posted it to social media with the end cut out , which predictably the pro Russian trolls picked it up as if it was a major success, not bothering to question where all the river crossing equipment is, or why there's only like 4 dead dudes. Once this spread a bit, they then posted the full video, highlighting Russian Media's general inability to properly confirm their sources.

As a US Navy sailor, I've deployed into the Black Sea on numerous occasions. The Russians always send what we call a "shadow." One of their frigates (normally a Krivak, the RFN *Ladnyy* (801), but sometimes other smaller surface combatants) would follow us throughout our stay in the Black Sea, which -- due to international treaties -- wouldn't last more than 30 days from the day we entered through the Bosporus. Not all the time, but damn near all the time, we would regularly simply... outpace our shadow by increasing to half-speed, usually about 15 knots, which is not fast at all by modern warship standards. The Russian warship would usually belch black smoke and struggle to keep up. On more than one occasion, they would blow their engines and go completely dead in the water. One specific occasion back in... 2018? 2019? I can't quite remember, but they blew their engines and we stuck around until their tug arrived to two them back to Sevastopol, despite their heavy insistence that they were completely fine. Whatever, fellas, we're just here to make sure you're not a hazard to other maritime traffic. The RFN has always been a joke and always will. They're more of a ramming threat than anything else, to be honest. Anytime we were in the Med, we were more concerned about shit cooking off between Greece and Turkey -- two of our NATO allies -- rather than anything the RFN could do. For those who are hungry for war, I always remember a quote from the old (to me) show M*A*S*H. "Hawkeye: War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. Father Mulcahy: How do you figure, Hawkeye? Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe. Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander."

Well, let me spin you a naval yarn. USS Kittyhawk was the last conventional carrier in operation in the US Navy. She was stationed in Japan. Her deployment schedule was 3 months out, 3 months in, rinse and repeat forever. That put considerable strain on the venerable warship. Having returned from a deployment, late in 2001, the ship pulled in pierside for inspection and repair. At this point in her life, she needed considerable maintenance to continue operating. To facilitate the repairs, her hatches were dogged open to allow air trunks, hoses filled with oxygen and acetalyne (for welding) and elecrtical cables to be threaded throughout the ship. Most equipment was rendered inoperable for repairs. I was on watch, with most of the crew off the ship as is the custom when returning from deployment. During my slow and otherwise uneventful watch, the deck watch sounded general quarters, and to man battle stations. We were unable to secure the ship, since there was cables and hoses everywhere (some hatches were actually chained open, and would require bolt cutters to close). Since we were pierside, the air wing was not onboard. A message over the 1MC declared that the world trade center and pentagon had been "destroyed by hostile forces". So, here we are, no planes, can't close up the ship, all the anti-air systems offline and we were told "someone" had just attacked America and were blowing things up. Our defences consisted of two teenagers with shotguns on the flight deck. In the end, nothing came of it. The specifics of the actual events of 9/11 are well documented. Having heard the situation of the Moskva, I felt a bit of sympathy for those sailors. "But for the grace of God go I" and all that.

It’s important to remember it. If one were actually in the fight, there is a psychological purpose (maybe even a necessity) to dehumanize the poor bastards shooting at you and being shot at by you. It’s really a tradition of war to call the enemy derogatory nicknames. For example, Germans in WWI were called Huns, in WWII they were called Krauts. So the Russians are called Orcs. And it’s not that weird a comparison due to Putin being similar to Sauron in most ways. (The biggest difference being that Putin’s ring is undergoing prolapse.) I save my breath in criticizing non fighters calling Russians Orcs. If white people are going to criticize other white people, who am I to argue? I do feel sympathy for the Russian dead, the crippled, and their families. But that sympathy is dwarfed by the deep sadness I feel for all of Ukraine.

When a Russians die it is a harsh reason to be happy only because it means we are that much closer to the end of this war. Match starts and he just shouts “Uraaaa!” Over his mic and charges in blind and immediately gets killed. We give him shit, we’re all laughing then he tells us it didnt work because we didnt join in…so we do. All of us shouting “Ura!” Over our mics shooting blindly…laughing between rounds. He was probably my age. Maybe a little younger. Which means this would be his war. Which means there is a very real chance that this crazy, funny kid from Russia…died horribly in a trench. Fun little story. Back in 2008 or so I was stationed on the USS Frank Cable- a "non combatant" submarine tender and we steamed with some Russian ships to do a memorial for lost Russian submariners. it was us, a US Navy destroyer, and 2 Russian ships ( The Varyag- a ship identical to the Moskva, and some Russian destroyer). The Varyag was recently overhauled and recommissioned, and had issues multiple times. I remember at least 3 instances when we were steaming in formation that we had to do circles for hours because the Varyag would have engine issues. which they claimed were "training exercises". Twice it billowed out black smoke and the engines completely died and the destroyer had to come along side and provide support. The ship either didnt have any laundry facilities, or their facilities were broken, because all the Russian sailors had to hang their clothes outside the ship to dry them. When we got to Vladivostok and I got the opportunity to chat with Russian sailors it became apparent how terrible a condition their naval forces are. The conscripts have zero esprit de corps or morale, they eat poorly, get paid even more poorly, and from the sound of it they rarely do any training because they just dont have the fuel and funds to do training exercises.
@voodoodummie
@voodoodummie 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard here and there how this connect to the deep rooted corruption of the Russian government. The state would actually issue funds for training and repairs, but of course those funds would disappear in some decorated pocket. On paper the trainings were done "but it did happen to be more expensive than expected" and ditto for repairs. As for the actual training there have been reports of soldiers essentially just running laps, as that is cheap. The crux however is that Russia installed such crooked officers because they are crooked, ergo, easily bought and loose with rules. That is if the officer didn't just buy the position from the higher officer for "mutual benefit." And today we can see just how far corruption, if widespread enough for enough time, can absolutely rot away an army. The army never expected to be used as an army, they had cushy jobs embezzling funds away. Russia's army is a parade army, and it is sad that they've send the world's largest marching band to their deaths.

Your point about how the Muscovites never consider the contributions of their subordinate nations to the USSR's success reminds me of how they also like to talk about the 30 million "Russian" dead in the Great Patriotic War. Ignoring that millions of those were Ukrainians, Belarusians, Kazakhs, Uzbeks, etc. When one looks more closely at the USSR's history, one realizes that calling the USSR "Russia" is a real falsehood--so much of their military, scientific, and industrial talent wasn't Russian at all. But they haven't gotten that message--they haven't realized that they needed Ukraine a lot more than Ukraine ever needed them.

Pure class for bringing the video to end on such a somber and empathetic note. You're a good man, Lazerpig, and while it was certainly a gut punch to be reminded of the senseless and horrible loss of young lives for the sake of old mens' grudges, mythologies, and egos, I appreciate the reminder. It really is easy to sit in comfort and make light of or abstract and distance outself from things across the world from us, even when we absolutely shouldn't. I hope the families of the men and women who have died needlessly in a war they never wanted to be part of will someday find peace and consolation, however hard that may be. Somberness aside for a moment, both a bit hopeful for the potential success of the ongoing Ukranian counter offensive, and feeling a small amount of amusement and pity for Lazerpig and other creators (Adam Something's deeply supportive but emotionally conflicted community posts come to mind) who had videos ready before everything went completely sideways. I've certainly had chaos injected into a project right before launch, but never like this That maintenance report was a genuinely horrifying read, holy shit. I've been saying it for a while, Russia, with a smaller economy than Italy, is talking out of its ass about its military. They claimed they have hypersonic missiles, one of the biggest armies in the world, fifth gen fighters, fourth gen tanks, largest nuclear stockpile in the world, massive fleets of aircraft and a massive fleet of naval vessels. There is no fucking way they could maintain all that with the budget they had. Turns out, as is said in the video, it was empty bluster. Naval engineer here. The reason you would have the firefighting equipment on the deck spraying into the air like that is because there is a crossover valve between the bilge system and the firefighting system that can be opened to allow the firefighting system to pull from the bilges, instead of from seawater outside the ship like it normally does. (The bilge system is the system of pumps that takes up water that accumulates in the low points throughout the bottom of the ship, whether in small amounts during normal service, or in emergencies. If your bilge system is overwhelmed by flow rate of incoming water and needs the firefighting pumps and hoses to help deal with things, you are in big trouble.) I've never heard the "sign of respect" thing, but it may be true. But you're basically always going to see that on a sinking ship either way, because it's part of the process of trying to bail it out. Note that you are likely relying on emergency generators to power the bilge and firefighting systems at this point, because I would imagine the main powerplant is underwater. Emergency generators are always found up in the superstructure, so they will be among the last things to sink. However, they can run out of fuel.
@dynamicworlds1

@31knots50
@31knots50 2 жыл бұрын
Just going off of your answer not sure if you're a Naval Engineer or a MARITIME Engineer. But on Western Naval vessels none of them are set up this way what so ever. The bilge is known to have water from condensation mixed with oil from small seepage and leakage of various systems over time or from small spills as sailors do maintenance. You'd never want to spray that water anywhere near where you have a fire going on. In fact the pumps that remove bilge water would be aligned to dump that water overboard in the event of an engine room casualty while spraying foam and seawater onto the fire in the space to remove any leaking fuel or oil to not have cascading fires. The pumps for firefighting water are also located under the engines on every Naval vessel that I've been on due to their design characteristics, and if you didn't have enough pressure or lost a pump in one space you'd activate more in other spaces and would secure firefighting water going to equipment that's not needed for the situation to keep the ship alive. Lastly most ships don't have emergency generators just redundant main generators in a system where you don't need all of the power of the other generators and for ships with emergency diesels they're located above the waterline but there's definitely no space for them in super structures.

As someone from the Balkans who as a kid went through the 90s Balkan Wars, the whole part from 18:30 up to 19:28 gives me chills and its spot on , because this is way too familiar to us, when dealing with Serbs... All you have to do is replace "Russia" with "Serbia", "Soviet union" with "Yugoslavia", "Moscow" with "Belgrade" and you understand why most of the former Yugo states are in NATO, even Montenegro. Why we look with disgust when some youtube idiot, that has no idea abut anything, starts cucking for Yugoslavia, asking why the hell was there a war in the first place, why didnt we "all get along", "you are all slavs with practically the same language", "Yugoslavia was so wonderful"....well for whom, Belgrade and the Serbs, oh yes, that for sure... There is a reason Serbia was in a delirium supporting the invasion of Ukraine, same schizo ultranationalistic "Slav ubermensch" mindset bordering on the insane. "The heavenly ppl, the ppl who defeated the nazis, the ppl who resisted NATO air strikes in 1999 and were unbroken" (yep google "nebeski narod" i "nebeska srbija" this shit is insane) When the invasion on Ukraine began, in mass street gatherings that were on the edge of bizzare, Serbs with Russian flags chanted "Rusi, Bjelorusi, mali Rusi" (Russians, Belorussians, "little Russians" aka Serbs). And as Lazerpig said, they wont learn a damn thing. Serbs doubled down with myths and propaganda after the fall of Miloshevich, so will the Russians when Putin is gone....

But of course when many of the states began to secede the wonderful and very friendly groups of Serbians welcomed this with ope- no, wait, nevermind, they just decided to start a war over it and aimed to dehumanize their enemy with ridiculous nationalistic claims and proceeded to create one of the most vitriolic, disgusting and hateful relations in the world all within the Balkans.

When those initial pictures started appearing online it was pretty evident to us Navy vets that there had been a colossal failure on many levels. Damage control failures for sure but it's Russia and this is nothing new. My Dad and Grandfather served in the Navy, Dad was a lifer, and we heard all sorts of stories about how the soviet navy "operated" and this incident isn't surprising. I remember Dad coming back from a Cold War patrol (he was a submariner), he was part of one of the Atlantic Fleets at the time, and he said that one of Russia's two super carriers had a systems casualty with its fresh water systems. They refused help from the USN (not surprising) and said "Everything was fine". What that crew went through because of the arrogance of their government is inexcusable. Russian military capability has been built up to an urban legend level of truth by common knowledge here in the West. It's always been known that the reason they had so many CIWS batteries and their connected sensors mounted aboard their surface warfare platforms was because their unreliability required massed fire in order to make up for their deficiencies. It's the same reason they mounted so many guided missile batteries. Unreliability has always been accepted into their battle doctrines that are designed around mass volume of fire with the idea that most of their systems will never get through so you fire as much as you can in the hope that some will strike their targets. They employ this with all their force branches. The way Russia has recklessly thrown away the lives of their service personnel, many of whom did not want to be there, many of whom, along with their families were lied to, is a moral failure that should be condemned. Obviously those Russians who have participated in war crimes, such as those thus far recorded, should be held to account. This war is wrong, tragic, and infuriating. I feel for the Ukrainian people. I feel for the everyday Russians who are angry that their family members are dead for lies and who are angrily demanding answers. I feel for those military personnel who disagreed with the invasion and who's lives were expended in the name of political expediency. It's too bad Moskva went down. No sailor should ever be put into that kind of situation. We all love our ships and hate to see them in any sort of bad condition. At the end of the day, the sea is every sailors enemy. Those men were killed by the shear failure of their military and civilian political leaders. I hope Mark survived. I'll be praying for his family. I remember every time Dad deployed on patrol we were proud of him being on the front lines of the Cold War defending our nation and our allies but in the back of your mind you always had that thought of what if. You didn't dwell on it but it was always there. I cannot imagine what Mark's family is going through right now because they don't know what has happened to their son who's life is really just beginning as an adult. When I was in, I was a gunnersmate, I was 19 when I joined and 21 by the time I joined the 7th fleet in the Persian Gulf. Shortly after I arrived we had a H-57 helo (Navy speak for helicopter) go down. We lost all our shipmates unfortunately while we were underway providing support for the Abraham Lincoln carrier battlegroup. Back then there was no internet and being underway I had to wait until we pulled into port before I could contact my family to assure them I was alive. Even though we had four generations of Navy in our family, I could hear the relief in their voices when I called. I didn't know that the crash had been reported on the news and they'd seen the headlines. Nearly 30 years later and I still think about my shipmate who died in that crash. I still see his face. I think we would have become very good friends. We were going to hang out after his helo got back from the flight they were running that day. Yeah, I'll be praying for Mark and his family. Nations should not take lightly the lives of their men and women who serve their country nor the devastation that will forever impact the lives of loved ones, families, & friends. The cost of war should always be weighed, especially by those who will sacrifice nothing, endure nothing, and understand nothing about what their warfighters service required for their country. Thanks Lazer for saying what you did at the end. You stated in so many words that we should also understand that not everything is so black and white and clear cut in times of war. Don't get me wrong, we all need humor and dark humor in these times. It helps us to process and deal with terrible situations like what we are seeing in Ukraine. So thank you for your humor and keep up the great work you do. Everyone, make sure to laugh every day, enjoy the company of your friends and family, and despite all the valleys we go through, smile. Also get some icecream or chocolate or something savory that makes you go yum heh.

Ya that's the one thing about the Federation's treatment of their troops that is just infuriating as a vet, is how they lied to them about the whole war. I don't feel bad for those who have committed war crimes. I do feel for those who were innocent and used as fodder. I can't imagine what their families are going through.

World power yes, has the potential, yes, all the resources and even military power, but lots of that is wasted on corruption, bad manegement. Removing doom weapons from Russia and size, British and French army, can be said, to hold its own with Russia, and even being superior in some fields. And the navy, the Russian navy doesnt compare with these 2, let alone the USA. China soon will take the 2nd place in terms of world best army, specially with Russia losing all these men and equipement. And Japan, if the plans for the next 10 years come as reality, will surpass also Russia. And i am not going even talk about, the possibility of a German new army or a European Union army.

His whole channel has a clear, crisp presentation, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the content a big boost. He's been compared to Battle Order, but I think Lazerpig has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour In '22, Lazerpig released this, 'Putin's Big Oof', his most accomplished commentary. But I think his undisputed masterpiece is "The T34 is not as good as you think it is", a video so hilarious, most people probably don't listen to the military history. As a Bulgarian citizen I gotta admit, rather shamefully, that many Bulgarians are in support of Russia. This comes from the communist propaganda that made sure to link the liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman empire directly to the Russians as our Slavic Brothers. However, modern historians have a far more sober look on things. Let's start with the fact Bulgarians are not precisely Slavic country. Second, the Russian empire liberator army consisted of people from many nationalities. Third, the Russian Tzar (the title Tzar is the Bulgarian word for "emperor") wanted to create a satellite of the Russian interest in the face of our country. But, the Russian military generals and diplomats were quickly expelled from Bulgaria once our newly established government realized the true intents of the Russian Empire. Not only that, Russia again had several attempts at establishing control of Bulgaria, and in 1944, after the misterious passing of our Tzar Boris III, the Red Army of 250 000 soldiers occupied our territory and fed from the common folk, raped many women (there are documents in the state archives) and murdered an excess of 30 000 men and women without a sentence. (those were predominantly artists, writers, politicians, large business owners and etc). Now I know this because my job is related to studying a lot of history, but 90 of people are still oblivious to the truth. It does help also that modern Russia demonstrates a rather conservative look on genders, orthodox Christianity and etc - Bulgarians are also conservative.

If they don't want to listen : no problem. Don't insist, they are not a threat to anyone. It's impossible to reverse a good propaganda machine alone, especally when people firmly believe in it. Don't worry, do your little part, maybe one day it will improve. With russian propaganda always saying "according to the plan, we dominate Ukraine", with time, more and more people will see the lies. However, Tervil chose to continue using the title of Khan. As already mentioned, it was during Simeon I's reign that "Tzar" became the official title.

Mad respect for your reminder that war is hell. People who wargame from the comfort of their homes need to be reminded sometimes that behind 50,000 casualites are 50,000 real face. Plus 50,000 mothers, 50,000 fathers, and others who will never see their loved one again. War is not a game... also WHEN THE FUCK IS YOUR NEXT VIDEO!! Goddamn i've rewatched all your videos TWICE in the last month of waiting. I. WANT. MORE. LAZERPIG!!! D:

which is funny, when you compare this video to the one he showcased earlier on with the pro-russian dude with the unironic anime girl gifs while looking like a living wojak. Straight up, that shows how little respect or connection they actually do have to the war they talk about so much and claim to be "experts" on. What a crock of crap.

Simple. It got upgraded to a submarine and was sent for a special operation to find sunken treasure, it just hasn’t come up yet And joke aside, I like what you said at the end so much as someone who comes from a line of people who served in numerous militaries throughout history. It’s easy to look at a number on a paper in war and think “this is good for (whichever side you’re on)” but what’s often forgotten in this war, and every other, is that the 100’s of millions who have died to a few mens ambitions all had a story to tell. And they’ll never be able to do so

12:50, this is the moment everything clicked for me. The Russian Navy is still the Soviet Navy, much like how the rest of the military is still running on Soviet equipment, thinking, and corruption. My memory may be conflating a few details, but during the whole 600 ship navy debacle in the Reagan administration, there was an actual visit to the Soviet Union where Navy personnel got to walk around a guided missile destroyer. Don't quite recall if it was an Sovremenny or Udaloy class, but the big thing that stood out to the guy writing a report back to Washington was that the launch hatches on the anti-ship missiles were *rusted shut.* Navies are some of the most expensive pieces of military hardware out there, and Russia has never been able to truly commit to making its Navy catch up to the world. Whether Stalin, Khrushchev, Gorbachev, or Putin, the dollar doesn't lie. Whether its loud as hell nuclear reactors, constantly running your carrier's engines when docked to the point they break because there's no facilities for it to use shore power, or even basic maintenance, the Russian Navy can't afford to exist.

Which is why I always laugh when Tankies bring up the Soviets “landing troops” on mainland Japan led to their surrender💀 They NEVER had the capabilities to begin with! Even after the US mopped most of the Japanese Navies best ships. Even in that state, the Japanese were still massively superior, and would have wiped out entire Red Army brigades before landing one soldier on their soil. There’s a reason why they never made it past Manchuria, because going any further would have been impossible. You know who actually had that capability? The Yanks and Brits…

@@hollister2320 The Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945 is... well, the sort of thing Putin expected Ukraine to be. The Japanese Empire couldn't contest T34-85s and IS-2s, much less the amount of manpower they brought to the battle. Admittedly, the Imperial Japan perception was less about a 'naval invasion' and more that any operation by the Soviets past Manchuria would be completely unopposed. Everything, and when you look at how Ketsugō was written that is the entire idea, was meant to be put in opposition to the American landing zones. The army, navy, air force, and civilian population would all go to die in southern Kyushu and Satsuma to shock the Americans into offering favorable terms. So facing the prospect of an invasion from both the US in the south and Russia in the North, most of the military threw in the towel to protect Hirohito.

@@hollister2320 If I remember correctly, it was the US under Project Hulu that supplied the Red Army in the Far East with those ships, all 1500 of them. And the only time the Red Army tried to invade Japan beyond Sakhalin in Hokkaido they were blasted back by some small IJA garrison along the shore...

This explains partially why Ukraine attempted the strike at all - it may have been clear after long term observation (esp by drones) that the Moskva was vulnerable to attack. It’ll be interesting to find this sort of thing out after the war.

It really helps humanize and put a literal face to the phrase, "War! What is it good for?!" Peacetime is great, but unfortunately, it also allows for so much of the horrors, nightmares, and harsh realities of war and its consequences to fade away, be forgotten, and for the people that new exactly what it was like to fear the threat of total annihilation on the daily to simply grow old and die, their stories passed off as just grandpa's rambling about how awful and how hard life was then.
