Yup, this is another problem comics face. The character will never be laid to rest and the story will be retold. Which is why I don’t like when people fault Batman for not killing or stopping the Joker. The fictional verse is decided by the writers. The only reason Joker isn’t dead or imprisoned is because he’s DC cash cow villain. He will be brought back again and again because the writers make it so. If Batman were real I’m sure Joker would be permanently imprisoned in the Batcave or dead, but the two are somewhat synonymous now.

Completely agree. I think batman killing at least as a last resort is actually fully IN character for him - or it should be. Hes famously ruthless in achieving goals, his entire mythos is born out of supreme trauma that he hasnt processed at all, and hes supposedly the bad boy of heroes in dc. Killing from time to time would make him even more of a grey area character, which Id personally love.

I agree with you about him retiring and simply stop being THE Batman, but essentially that's what Batman Beyond was made for: His "war" will never be over. Even when he's an old man, incapable of fighting crime personally, he'd have Terry McGinnis take over as the new Batman while he just assists from the sidelines. Spider-Man authors also came up with a timeline for this. After Peter Parker there would be Miles Morales and after Morales there would be Miguel O'Hara. I think the issue is that these characters became so iconic and remade so many times that it's impossible for Marvel or DC to drop them for their successors, even though it should be done eventually

He started off as a kid, then became an adult, got married, became Hokage, his story concluded and Boruto's started. Same universe, same timeline, same characters and the same canon. Yea, baller exit too. Like we've all had discussions about which persona represents the people in DC UIniverse the most, and they've more than likely had that internal discussion with themselves as well. But for Superman to straight up TELL Batman "the truth" with such absoluteness before just leaving him there stunned, accepting the truth he's been avoiding, and re-evaluating his whole existence. I think that in accepting it, that Batman will ALWAYS come first. Like Alfred has come to realize over the years. Alfred has just changed his way of thinking and routines to accommodate Bruce as best he can, and changed his expectations about Bruces' future. It would just make it easier on Bruce as well, mentally and emotionally, if he just accepted the same instead of the constant internal battle of trying to convince himself otherwise. Looks like Superman's announcement was the final push. Batman finally accepted it and needs a moment to adjust, so he's just standing there. Stunned and speechless.

Love your comment. Ever since his parents death, Bruce tend to see on what he should do in order to ' bring them back ' by eradicating every *pain ( *crime ) that it once taken from him and that no one should ever endure the same. Superman is different. He knows that anything won't stop him since he's the most powerful but doesn't understand how a ordinary human feels without any superpower. The mind is more powerful that brute strength and that's why Clark knows Bruce is enigmatic. Yes, he knows Luthor has a mind as well but not as dark as Batman.

This story shows Batman as the obsessed guy who stops at nothing to succeed. He doesn't sleep enough. He barely eats. He keeps his loved ones at a distance. He's both literally and figuratively killing himself to make sure he meets his mountainous goal. Superman is that one friend who doesn't take crap and pulls him aside because everyone else is too scared to talk the guy down. We should all take a look at ourselves and those we love and see if we're this Batman who needs to listen to Superman and also figure out if we're this Superman who needs to have a talk with Batman.

“Anything that tries to kill me makes me stronger.” What a short sighted answer, the kind I wouldn’t have expected from Batman whose entire niche is staying prepared against the future. It shows this is a battle he isn’t prepared against. Something he isn’t ready or willing to fight, because he thinks this Batman is all he has, and what he has left is nothing more than a shell of who he eventually could be. I think Superman understood this wasn’t a discussion Batman was having. It was the right move to leave when he did, to make sure Batman was left with those words instead of letting him deflect them or dodge the issue.

it’s not that DC doesn’t want to get rid of the characters they’ve attempted a couple times but the people won’t let it because they won’t buy the comics after they change it or people won’t give it the chance it deserves to read something because it’s Batman if it’s not Batman that they want they won’t read it and if it goes down in sales they can’t afford to keep the comic alive so they have to bring back the people that mostly make the money

Words can never describe the scope and complex lore and character of Batman. I don't even know how to put this into words but this comic book is clear showcasing of what Batman is and what he deals with. His inner struggle to make peace with himself, his relationships with the justice league members, and more. People say that Batman is as good as he is only because of his villains. But I disagree. It's not that Bruce Wayne is one noted. It's that he often doesn't showcase his true emotions. He doesn't show weakness nor does he go easy on others. It is he who makes his villains so good. Without him, Two face, Mr freeze, and especially Joker wouldn't be as iconic or as memorable as they are today. Batman doesn't showcase a friendly side or go soft on others due to his trauma and what he lost in his life. From the death of his parents to his falling outs with Dick Grayson, etc. And that is why Batman will always be an icon. Not just for DC, but comic books period.

This Clark is taking pot-shots at a man with no superpowers, claiming how he makes his job look "easy" by comparison (duh, if you can fly things get much easier), and then proceeds to rip into Bruce for seemingly no damn reason. Hey that's why Batman beyond is such a good show, his war finally gets to end. It's also another reason for New 52 being good (Obviously a lot of it sucked in execution but the idea.) You can tell these stories in multi-year cycles then reboot and tell it a different way to avoid the problem of immortality and unending war. Marvel needs a reboot so bad. Things are just so messy now, they need to bring things to an end and restart. But at the same time, I'm not sure I trust this current stable of writers to do any of that, I don't think they have the skill to pull it off.

I can see why Superman would find the darkness in Batman ugly, but it seems out of character for him to bring it up. It would be more characteristic of him to try to cheer Batman up, to see the brighter side of life. A number of writers have tried to make Superman darker and grittier, but it really doesn't work. That's not Superman's persona.

"You're the best, but I need you to be better." Superman acknowledges that Batman IS the best that humanity has to offer, no serums, no superpowers, just a man who pushed himself to the limit of human excellence, a man who took his pain and tragedy, and used it as practically as a human possibly could. Kal-El shows his total admiration for Batman in this statement, this, and his opening statement at 1:47, "I admire you. Through sheer determined will, you've made yourself the BEST you can be." He can't fathom how a man can become what Bruce has, at least not until the Joker kills Lois and his unborn child in Injustice. Then it all becomes clear.

Batman cannot find peace and never will. Bruce is the mask. Batman is the real persona. This was made abundantly clear in the Bruce Wayne Framed for Murder saga. He admitted as such, himself. And explains how it’s the penguins ego that always enables Batman to pull victories over him. Batman never allows his Id, to determine his action or control his thoughts. Batman and Superman are really the end all be all of comic book heroes. One is basically a god who encapsulates the best traits of humanity and his adopted homeworld. The other is just a man who has used his intelligence, willpower, and trauma to rival that of beings he should have no business squaring off against. They are the light and darkness that all other comic book heroes dwell beneath. This clip is a beautiful encapsulation of their differing personalities and motivations. It truly is a shame what modern comic books writers are doing to the characters, but that's really more of a reflection of how devoid our current society is in regard to character and morality. It's a dark time for comic book heroes, but thankfully we have 80 years worth of stories to reference and remember.

Just from a writing perspective, considering how much skill, effort, and creativity is needed to make a decently original Batman story at this point, or any of these other characters, imagine what those writers could do if they weren't as restricted to long running characters, or even to the superhero genre. Marvel and DC seem incredibly hesitant to publish anything that isn't superheroes and isn't tied in to their existing universes, even though as publishers they have the most ability to draw readers to new and original titles, and it seems like the US comics industry is hurting for it

Stop with the talking point cause it wasn't smart nor true the first time it was said nor is it now. Dc is tied to them because they are popular, the demand for these characters is endless. Any one who knows how to run a business knows you give people what they want and not what some else who thinks the us comic book industry needs something. New characters come and go all the time some remain popular some vanish from relevance, the problem is new characters will never be iconic like batman and superman and trying to replace inferior products with beloved icons is a bad business model.

Batman's darkness is the entire reason they scrapped the Wonder Woman love interest angel, which is a shame. Batman can be fueled by his darkness but he also needs to know when to walk in the light which makes his extremley close friendship with Clark all the better. Clark has more access around his cave than anyone save Bruce and Alfred. Their dynamic of light and dark highlights both their humanities while showing why they need each other, the other can do what they cannot. WW and Bruce would really help pull him out of the consistent brooding angle they have been hyper focused on and show that even if he does attain happiness Bruce is still Batman. Just my opinion
