My wife and I miss Sifu Ted, Happy Birthday to him (yesterday) Ted was a very great teacher and man. One of things that Guru Dan, Sifu Ted and Jesse Glover all said about Bruce was he taught people differently and kept a lot to himself. Great Story.

Hey Mike, so to close the circle - JKD took footwork and lead hand from rapier and made empty handed fighting out of it, we add the knife to it again, here is the quote from Jesse: "If he has a knife and you don't, this will be your knife", showing his hand formed to a finger jab. in NCGF there is also simplified knife and stick work.

Greetings from Northern Japan! JKD practitioner (under Nakamura's group HQ in Tokyo) in Aomori. You answered a question I've been pondering last night. I was training with a JKD group in Morioka last night and it just clicked about the relations of JKD and edged weapons. My JKD experiences has been with various teachers who have trained with Inosanto, Wong, Poteet, Bustillo, Vunak, Denny & mix of in between. Some have separated the weapons portion from JKD. Some have been incorporated with the JKD curriculum so hence my confusion on the academic level. We were working on footwork, elbows to blade. Myself being Pekiti Tirsia, Inosanto-Lacoste & Bujinkan practitioner have seen the weapons based relationship but many JKD teachers in the past have said there are no weapons.formally in the JKD curriculum. I have taken my melee weapon studies and applied to JKD concepts that I have learned. You have explained it. Thanks! About the hand hit..... in kali, a good hand hit during stick sparring will take the fight away quickly. That's just practice wearing gear. What more with a blade?

Really great video. I've been doing kali stuff for years and really enjoy it but when I'm actually weapon sparring I land more touches with a fencing structure in both knife and stick work.

9:27 Here’s a look at the #viperjkd entries. 1. If they put a left hand up front put a left hand out back. This means. Whatever hand they lead with. Try an opposite lead first. Ok. 2. He shoots a right hand. 3. We intercept with a back right hand BUI-SAO. A two handed PAK and BUI-GEE. Right through it or over it or underneath of it. A cat of nine tails pointing fingers in a triangle thumb is tucked at center palm. This is a weapon. 4. Front hand BUI GEE left hand over elbow. We intercepted by screwing through his attack right hand. That took out the wrist. This takes out the elbow. Try it. Line up n see. Outside or inside. When attacking yourself try a 1-2 back hand first ending off on a lead BUI GEE right hand on a left eye left hand on a right eye. ❤😉💥

Nice way to demonstrate it. This was also my colclusion: If you can hit with a finger jab you can also hit even better with the knife. If you also retract the knife fast and in such a way that it cuts on the way back, trying to parry it is not such a fantastic idea in most cases. Keeping the knife in line and staying behind it is also one of the main principles in Sicilian stiletto fighting, but the footwork is different.

This is great!! I studied JKD for only 9 months but I really loved it. I used to do knife fighting with my sifu .....wooden ones of course. He did explain that JKD used knife and fencing techniques but you have really crystalized it and explained the relation quite well. An Aha moment for me today watching ..just like you had one from Ted Wong!!! Great Stuff!!!

6:46 Ya know.. it should be said that the MANTIS KUNG FU system fights with the blade n hammer. A two handed ambidextrously fired system of PAK SAO. PAI SAO, GAU CHOY. Thunder from the mountain. Bruce probably liked that TONG LONG as well. I heard and know, he was interested in it at a point. 💯🙏☮️

I'm going to sound very green, but I was looking at a few teachers approach to utilizing a Tan Sau (Sao, etc.). One talked about letting there be some bend in the arm and a flatted palm facing up to the ceiling while another explained going for a straightened arm for the sake of Chi flow. My guess is both have pros and cons. Position the arm where it needs to be when it needs to be there seemed correct? Just the tip of an iceberg of application I suppose. Thanks again. Peace, love and ☯️.
@FlorisGerber5 жыл бұрын
the important thing about tan sao is that if you do it right, the opponent feels as if he gets pulled. If you can do this every 100 or so tan sao, then you are working in the right direction. The root of the thumb can hel accomplish that goal, it is somewhat easier to pull with the root of the thumb when your wrist is flexed, but it is not impossible without.

Yes you maintain distance until they get close then you wrestle and grapple trying to get control of their weapon while stabbing them Etc, like the Seals

I also train in HEMA and we use many different blades and sword lengths, heaps of fun, challenging and interesting. But I must say I would rather live somewhere that you can't carry a gun or blade such as the UK than South Carolina where you are 7 times MORE likely to be murdered. I could tolerate being able to walk around without a weapon for that.
@JKDandWingChun4 жыл бұрын
WingChun first, congrats on HEMA. Love their stuff and it’s great that those methods get the recognition they deserve. Second, SC crime rates are driven heavily by gang crime, which relies on illegal handguns. In no state in the U.S. is it legal for a 17 year-old to have and carry a handgun and yet they have them and shoot each other with them. And finally, any martial artist should know that the very concept of self-defense rests on liberty. A free man can defend himself. A slave can’t. Anyway, thanks for watching and for the thoughtful input.
@jedi77palmer4 жыл бұрын
@@JKDandWingChun I think we will have to respectfully disagree here. The genie is well and truely out of the bottle in the US, otherwise how did the 17 year olds get hold of guns? It's too late for the US to try and reduce guns in society. I don't see how the ability to carry a gun makes you a free man though, if anything it makes you a slave. A slave to the need to have a gun to protect yourself against other people with guns and a slave to the fear of the possible violence of the guns 'out there'. It's fairly unlike that the people of the UK would consider themselves slaves. In fact Britain is where the idea of not allowing tyrannical rule began with the Magna Carta
@robertvondarth1730 Жыл бұрын
I also practice HEMA, specifically Cutlass Dussak Hangar backsword and other short Sword forms. I have also practiced Jun Fan and JKD for decades. There’s no place you “can’t “ carry a gun or blade, but there’s places where it’s illegal, or not. The UK has a massive knife crime problem. The murder rates in the US are not geographically smoothly distributed, as there are pockets of extreme violence, in an otherwise safe continent. It’s generally a handful if cities, and even specific zones within those cities that skew the statistics. You walk around with a weapon whenever you go, it’s called your hands and feet. Anything that can be grabbed and swung at your head is a potential weapon, a weapon free society is pure make believe. Threat of violence has always been with us and always will be, and it is the responsibility of each individual to learn to defend themselves to the best of their ability. Slave vs free is a bit of extreme language, but it does highlight the idea that subjects have different rights than citizens, as the political philosophy or model is different, where the people themselves are considered to be the sovereigns, and the government governs by permission granted from the people.

I’m very disappointed. Not in this video. I ordered sifu Jason book because you seem like a great teacher. Then on page 41 you say how leftist part of society are scared of free men walking around with guns. Uh no. As a former marine and former police officer, the mindset that guns can be unregistered, unregulated and can include rapid fire weapons is what the candy ass’s and wackadoodles in society think. I’m so disappointed. You are one of the best teachers but that’s a pretty sore point for me
@robertvondarth17305 жыл бұрын
What is rapid fire, objectively?
@seanbunker70545 жыл бұрын
Not really complicated why a weapon that can murder many people in a short time is considered rapid fire. I’m embarrassed for your question. If you want those join the marines like I did
@JKDandWingChun5 жыл бұрын
Sean Bunker Whereas I thank you for your support and kind words about my teaching - which I greatly appreciate - please let me address your disappointment. First, since I was writing about using a weapon for self-defense, I thought it was incumbent upon me to provide the proper and logical moral framework for the issue. I did this - meticulously - upon the philosophical premise of liberty for all and the non-aggression principle (NAP). I simply asked that all self-defenders/martial artists vow to never initiate force against their neighbor directly or indirectly. This (NAP) is the only sound moral foundation upon which we can stand and the very premise of self-defense, after all. Your objection to my argument is to cite the crimes of a few in favor of the denial of self-defense rights to the many. In all, its an argument for tyranny because one is worried about anarchy. But, I do hope you’ll see, the answer to anarchy (violence by the individual) is never answered by tyranny (violence by the many). The answer is freedom and a proper understanding of the non-aggression principle. In closing, I do thank you again for your support and share your concern over the violation of the rights and safety of everyone. Where we differ, however, is in how to address the issue. I believe freedom and, therefore, self-defense as its corollary, are foundational rights for all. That was my argument in the book and I’m sorry it disappointed you. Best wishes,
@seanbunker70545 жыл бұрын
No offense, not trying to be disrespectful but here is why weapons should be regulated and some not allowed. I have no problem with someone that wants a pistol for home defense. But people go crazy. If they go crazy and can grab say an AR-15, their is really not much anyone can do. Many people are going to die. I had a friend call me with her class hiding in the gym during parkland. When you limit certain weapons these bad guys will still go crazy and kill but they can’t get the numbers are less. Running over someone with a car or using a handgun is going to be a smaller number. A officer can charge in and limit the deaths. As far as tyranny, not only does that pretty much mean shooting at federal officers which we all agree should never happen, the person will lose. Any legal gun owner should have no problem registering their gun. This stops the insane amount of guns, around half, that are given away, or float around. I think your morals are fine, but I hope you can be open minded to the fact that floating guns in society hurt more than they help or protect us from some mythical fight against evil government
