I will say the same thing for modern metal racquets provided they have bigger heads like a 98 or 100 square inch or bigger frame this includes modern aluminum if using aluminum that is not too whippy as in thin heads or using excessively modern 2000's on up titanium alloy frames. These other frames will usually play the same similar to using modern graphite or modern carbon fiber frames with a few exceptions on brands experiments that were duds or are no longer made like some Wilson Hammer models or old ProKennex that do not use the modern weight shift bead tech. This is why I can still use an older 25 inch long aluminum ProKennex Jr Pro Ace from the Power Contour era having mainly 4 of the blue & red 4.25 inch grip made in Taiwan model and 3 of the Chinese yellow & black with 4 inch grip, I got a bunch of backup for my original blue & red I got in 2001--2002 where the smaller grip is used when very tired backup during a match becuse of the grip size and weight of racquet being sightly lighter unless I am doing very well with the more popular, harder to find used on e-Bay blue & red model. My racquets have my unique choice of over grip I use becuse the base grip was failing even on 2 of the yellow that were nearly new with the shrink wrap on the grip, the grip was failing.

Quick note about stocking up on your favorite racquets. Remember to also stock up on Grommet replacements! Grommets are super cheap, usually $10-15/set while the racquet is in production, but once they move to the next model they stop making grommets for the previous one. I've found one guy out there who sells grommets for older model racquets charging around $100 per set because he KNOWS for people to keep using their racquets, they need grommets as those wear out very easily.

Another important factor if you’re going to have multiple frames of the same racket is the manufacturer’s inconsistency in manufacturing. The weight and balance can vary from racket to racket of the same model. Having them matched to each other is very important. For example, Babolat will list their weights with an error of +/- 7g. So those 300g Pure Drives you just bought could be anywhere from 293g to 307g and Babolat is ok with that.
@kogoromori5198Ай бұрын
I have two prince frames of the same model with 15 points difference in string weight! Not identical at all 😅
@enematwatson1357Ай бұрын
That's actually pretty much the industry standard. Babolat is only unique in being the last manufacturer who print their tolerances on the frame.

Thanks for your insights. I've found that this is even worse with shoes. I have a wide (2E) foot, and so my options are limited. I buy 2 or more pairs at a time. I ran a few marathons in my 20's, and I remember having a different pair for each one. The iterative changes in toe box size, heel to toe drop, etc would sometimes render the next iteration of a shoe utterly unlike the past one of the same "line" (or at least different enough that it mattered).
@virtualyme76592 ай бұрын
I play with a frame until it is worn out. It's a gradual thing and can go unnoticed to some degree. I was playing with a frame for several years and I got a new spare and the difference was quite stark. The one I was playing with was so much softer and less crisp. So I always keep that in the back of my mind knowing that they don't last forever but they can last for quite some time.
@jeffstulberg2 ай бұрын
Interesting. I noticed the same thing recently. I've been using the yonex duel g for a while and have been toying with the idea of changing frames. I noticed that every racquet I try feels more crisp and mine is a little too soft. Maybe it's time to put this one to bed.

My racket rotation is a little bit different. I have racket 1 strung, play with it until it needs restringing. Then, instead of racket 1 I have racket 2 strung freshly, and play with that one until it needs restringing. Then racket no.3, and after that one the cycle starts over. The other two rackets are then back-up / spare rackets in the mean time.
@CH-yp5by2 ай бұрын
A lot of advanced players have multiple racquets for tension reasons. They use the tightest tensions for news balls as you will have more control and change the racquet after the second set to a racquet with a lower tension where they get more power so they do not have to work as hard and the ball has soften up by then so it works fine. Personally I'm not at that level lol

Great video! I've been playing with the 2022 Speed MP for a while and love it. But I bought the shiny, new, black 2024 Speed Legend MP a few months ago and although I like it, I like the 2022 Speed better. The 2024 with the Auxetic 2.0 just feels kinda dead and muted. I could sell the Legend and buy another 2022 but the Legend looks so good so holding onto it for now. 😄
@randrothify2 ай бұрын
Totally agree with the racquet rotation advice. It’s ultimately cheaper to buy several racquets and rotate their usage than only using one extensively and keeping the others in reserve. I would add one caveat: buy multiples of the same racquet proportion to the number of times per week that you play so that you are ideally only playing a frame once a week. So if you play four times a week, buy four of the same racquet. If three times a week, get three racquets, and so on provided that you can afford to do so. Should save you money in the long run.

Nick has all good points as usual. One thing about the copoly strings though is that, if the 'nicks' (pun intended lol) in the crosses are deep enough that they prevent the mains from moving/sliding against the crosses with light force, then this will significantly change the playing characteristics of the string such that you might as well be using a very stiff, tightly strung strings. The deep notches in the crosses will effectively eliminate the 'snapback' of the mains and thereby reduce the spin potential, and the overall stringbed will feel way more solid, as if you're playing with a plyboard.

@iceman11252 ай бұрын
this is a really informative video, and nik is right, modern racket releases use mostly the same frame and change paintjob and move the weight distribution around to give us a different 'feel' of the racket. You can easily create different weight feel by tinkering with leadtape and customizing frames to 'your specs' instead. Companies have become greedy, charging us to shell out 250+ dollars for a new frame which only a few years ago used to cost around 150

With strings like a synthetic gut in an aluminum racquet or a cheap graphite model do this same test and if you are not seeing much snapback of the string or/and that really loud griding sound it is time for a replacement even if the string is in usable shape as these are signs that the racquet is near breaking the strings. However, you need to do restring with a synthetic gut or multifilament with outer nylon that is not using modern poly on the inside but a Kevlar braiding or braided nylon, possibly an older style braded poly inside, becuse those modern fully poly strings will need to be so low for vibration dampening the aluminum racquet could give elbow or shoulder issues having to power hard. Older poly style strings that tension out quick can be used in an aluminum racquet. Nearly the same rules apply for titanium racquets using mainly multifilament or cheap/older poly style strings for the racquet but not nylon gut/synthetic gut as the racquet tends to break quicker like in more powerful graphite or standard carbon fiber racquets.

I'll add a few thoughts: - if you truly love a racquet(s), more often than not if it's a newer release they'll sell the grommets for that racquet. Stock up on those. - a racquet that has gone through more string jobs will inherently be a softer racquet, it's RA will go down. - if you're playing hard like Nick mentions and scuff up/chip the paint, or shaving down the grommets, etc not only will this affect the balance, more importantly imo, its swingweight will alter. - I personally count/log hours on poly rather than times a month. I usually dont keep in poly over 25 hours I personally change mine after 14 simply because I have the luxury of restringing at home and I can tell the properties have declined after that point. Just my 2 cents :)
@Vdkotsinyan2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing, Have you been able to actually measure the changes in RA as racket gets older?
@Siloguy2 ай бұрын
Yeah my stringer said the same, racquets will last a long time but the grommets wear out and it will be hard finding replacements for older models.
@WaltKurtz682 ай бұрын
I mainly use multifilament and I have never had a string fray or break. I've had stringjobs last for over two years. I try not to use a stringjob for more than a year, though. I must say I use a lot of different rackets and I play twice a week, so no racket gets a ton of use. Which automatically makes 'em last longer.

I use rubber band from OfficeDepo as dampener. Not only it’s cheap, I can also write on it the date of the new strings. That way, I don’t need to number my racquets but just use the one with the oldest date. I also see if the poly strings are deeply notched but more often, I restring once the date on the rubber band had faded/disappeared from sun/oxidation.

Yes because writing on the rubber band is easier than putting a sticker with a single digit number (1, 2, 3) on a racket.

About the lifespan: personally I break strings with 18-20h of hitting (18x19 TFight 305). My brother breaks with 6-7h (16x20 Vcore 95). I rotate between string jobs. Why? If I rotate evenly (on practice per day), I may risk breaking both strings in the same match/tournament. I'm also a bit of a nerd, so I know exactly how many hours/string jobs my racquets have, how many hours my shoes were used, etc. Notion is a great tool to keep track of that. Btw, I differentiate the racquets by using dampeners with different colors. Just had an issue with a crack on the throat of my TF305, when it had barely 70 hours of play time and was restrung only 4 times.

Me: I usually have 2 or 3 rackets. My poly lasts lets say 16 hours until it goes dead. Use racket A until it needs to be restrung. Get it restrung and put it in your bag. Use racket B until it needs to be restrung. Get it restrung and put it in bag. Use racket A again. Repeat. NOT COMPLICATED. Also, do this so you do NOT have a favorite racket (assuming rackets are the same). The last thing you want is to have the strings break on your "favorite" racket in a tight match forcing you to have to use your non favorite. Lastly, better yet, have 3 rackets. Use the third to try/test different strings and/or different tensions. Currently using and loving the Percept 97 FWIW.

I break a string in about 8/10 hours and I play almost every day. I ended up buying 4 racquets 😅

One year? Two years? I've been using two of my three rackets for more than five years and they still feel perfectly fine to me. Am I doing something wrong? I always get them restrung about every three months.

Careful, you’re going to tank the entire racquet industry.😮

I made a video on how to throw your racquet without damaging it 6 years ago but didn't post it

why would your father gave the advice of not showing the video of how to throw the racket?!? I never threw my racket because I am not rich enough to destroy my posessions, ..but if I would be ,I would trow the hell out of them,..I really don't get the bad stugma of throwing rackets! We are humans, we are pasionate, ..is ok to express yourself ,is not like you are showing your bollocks or something.We don't want all to become Ice Cube Sinner😂

I think that post is just a joke, since manufacturers come out with a “new” version of an existing model about every year and really want people to buy the latest version, which of course is barely changed from the previous version, or maybe just the paint job is changed meaning the racquet is the same.
