This private lecture was informally filmed in 2010 and the video and sound quality is not ideal. It is, however, fully understandable and I thought the information it contains would nonetheless be of value to my KZbin viewers.
The lecture is the title of an article that I published in 1989 titled "What the Bible Really Says About..." with a whole list of topics. Mine was "death, afterlife, and the future," quite a tall order!
I have uploaded that chapter of the book and you can download it here:
jamestabor.com/wp-content/upl...
This lecture was part a Biblical Archaeology Society seminar, publishers of the premiere archaeology magazine, Biblical Archaeology Review. It is used with permission.
I encourage viewers to subscribe to the incredible BAS Library, with thousands of articles, books, and videos. There is nothing like this rich archive that covers every major topic and discovery for more than 40 years. Unlimited access to the library is available for a small annual subscription price, see: www.baslibrary.org.

Nobody knows what happens after we die. Live a good life, treat others fairly, and give thanks for your blessings. Either it’s lights out, or, something else. What is the point of trying to guess whatever that is? Just do the right thing and hope for the best. We’ll all find out someday, or, we won’t. Why worry?

But, of the 111 billion people who have ever lived on Earth since the beginning of time, only 14% of that total are, or were, Christians. That’s less than 16 billion. So, we have 85% of all humanity who will not go to Heaven? That does not make any sense or even seem fair. I’ll follow the Golden Rule, thank God for all my blessings, and hope for the best.

As an ex-muxlim this is both interesting and refreshing compared to Muhammads twisted view of punishments in the grave. Snakes and scorpions waiting for you and also being squeezed upon entering. You are also told that you can hear the footsteps of your loved ones departing away, then 2 angels appear to ask you 3 questions about God, Muhammad and your religion. I've started reading the Bible and realizing how much was plagiarism and was just an over-active imagination of a 7th century man.

That ISN'T an answer. It just equates a god to the Reality Principle. Isn't religion supposed to circumvent the Reality Principle, via a covenant? Except Job ends up, like Koahleth, by reaffirming that NATURE is not GOD, unless this god intervenes. Why bad things happen to good people is in no way answered by Job. What IS answered is the nature of a deity asserting absolute power and dominance, which is humanity vs reality. If this is the voice in Job of a god, it is not a god that is daily concerned about what you do. Even if you are PERFECT, anything can and will happen to you!

I know this is old stuff but most of us have never seen or heard it before so, thanks for posting it. It's fascinating! Like the last bit about doing good for goodness sake a lot. It connects the Hebraic and the Hellenistic worldviews and even if it doesn't resolve Plato's Euthyphro dilemma it acknowledges it. The dilemma comes from Plato's story wherein Socrates is a character discussing the nature of morality with this other, Euthyphro character and Socrates by deploying his method confronts him with the question of whether what's good and pious is good because god/s love it, or god/s love it because it is good. The paradox here is this: If the command theory is correct and that which is good, is good only because God/s love or command it, then morality is an empty, arbitrary concept. On the other hand, if we follow the second horn of the dilemma whereby God/s love that which is good, the logical conclusion is: God/s aren't the source but rather just a conduit of morality. This is much more problematic in relation to the concept of omni God.

They're all analogous stories built in different places and different times, but on the template of "The Hero's Journey". I can show that. The similarities we see. like flood stories, are where the analogs closely align. Then they can go crazy but they all mean the same thing. It plays out in the psyche. We turn these inward for self healing and strip away the carrier. The religion or myth.

This corrected one of my misunderstandings. Quran 19-23 has Mary saying she wished to be a thing ''totally forgotten'' I had understood this to be a lament for non-existence. I harbored this error, until this evening. I see, now, that Mary was confessing an understanding of the cosmos in terms of early Hebraic thought. The shoal and underworld were/are, to her, a domain of the forgotten.

Respectfully, when I hear “what does the Bible say?”…. I just wish people would realize that this is a false premise. The Bible is ultimately a story, “Gods testimony about His Son” and there is a climax, the cross, and a new life given through the resurrection!

I debated on whether to respond to your comment as I do not intend on making you feel defensive, embarrassing you, or overstepping boundaries. However, I think it’s fair to challenge your statement as best for all involved. I very much doubt anyone would readily admit that their faith is based merely on the promise of reward-as the same types of people who would only follow Christ because they want to enter Heaven are the ones who would lie to save face, especially when being clearly confronted. Perhaps it truly is the case that many Xp’s choose their belief because an eternal life is comforting, but your claim that you go around confronting them and they just admit that is the case doesn’t pass the test of normal human interactions. Please make your argument as a statement (ie, “I believe most Xp’s…”) rather than create some narrative in which your opponent in an alleged debate rolls over and states their entire religion is selfishly motivated. In your words, “Judaism is a religion of action.” Please examine your behavior and evaluate if you, in creating this bizarre narrative, are behaving consistent with Mosaic law. I felt moved to challenge you, as I would hope someone would challenge me when I too (as I often do) fall short of morality. I will use this as an opportunity to repent of my own sins and offer prayers that both of us grow spiritually into better people who can converse honestly/respectfully and support one another.

Great video here, Dr Tabor. One thing you are missing here on Luke 20:27 The Greek word for marriage is an active participle. Christ is answering the question whether she is bound in the afterlife, not whether marriage is eternal. This ties into later scripture by Paul which teaches Christ is the bridegroom and the church is the bride. To be consistent, it would reason that marriage can be eternal. Maybe even the same answer with Job, God will work it all out, He is just. EDIT: I did really enjoy this video. I enjoyed the progression from the Old Testament to Apocrypha to the New Testament. Loved how the Book of Enoch threw a curve ball in all this. Thank you for posting this.

God has appointed to every man his time. We live in time and also die out of time and wait until our change comes.(ressurection when Jesus returns at the last day) in other words we wait for the time when our body on earth will be reunited with the breath of life (spirit of life)from god in heaven at the time of Our change during the resurrection. when you die out of time and are sleeping in silence with no recollection of time then a thousand years is as one day and one day is as one thousand years. for some who has died in faith it has been over six thousand years but since they are out of time and have no recollection of anything. when they are awakened to enter into their change to them it will be as just one day that they were asleep(dead) therefore those who have fallen asleep in death are not anxiously waiting to be resurrected but rather will be awakened in peace never knowing they were in death for any length of time. That’s why Jesus calls death a sleep because your in a state of complete and total unconsciousness.

Many people adhere to the beliefs that (a) an all-powerful God exists, and (b) that he left his thoughts with us in a book that we can interpret and discover God's plan for us (though in various situations they deflect specific questions by answering that we can't know God's mind). What that leaves wide open is that an all-powerful God could have written a book that isn't true. If one can't know God's mind, citing the scripture is useless because one can't trust that it is an honest accounting of God's wishes. Maybe there is a pantheon of Gods and they entertain themselves by creating worlds of intelligent creatures, then gives them a book with confusing/contradictory information and laugh at how these mortals run with it. Or maybe it is a kind of Rorschach test where there is good information mixed with the execrable and God judges us based on which parts of the Bible we are drawn to. Maybe there is a hierarchy of heavens and the Gods have decided we don't need to know about the other ones yet. Maybe there is a God but there is no heaven or the afterlife is really terrible for everyone, but putting out the false book helps with crowd control here on earth, a kind of useful lie. Once you introduce an all-powerful magic being into your worldview, then nothing at all is certain. Imagine reading a book where one of the characters is all powerful -- there is no storyline in such a book where any narrative is inconsistent anymore as all constraints are gone. The point of this is: speculating about an afterlife may be entertaining, but why not focus on making the here-and-now a more fair and pleasant world, and just accept the consequences of that?

You have to hang onto your hat with James's lectures but I think he's suggesting that if you read the Bible carefully you can read/isolatewhat actually happened i.e. non supernatural events e.g. followers getting together and wish thinking sightings of Jesus along side the parallel jazzed up miraculous resurrection explanation. Just Greek authors used to spice up they accounts of wars with godly interventions.

Adapt was taken up to " heaven" Nibiru where the gods lived. It's nit a olace for humans. He was taken back to Earth because an Earthling cannot reside on Nibiru. Humans have been obsessed with " heaven" from the very beginning just look at the story of Gilghamesh who seeks immortality like the gods and seeks to take a rocketship to Nibiru but its denied.

An extensive popular review by Jay Tolson appeared in the April 9, 2006 issue of U.S. News & World Report.[4] Bert Jan Lietaert Peerbolte from the Theological University of Kampen writing in the Society of Biblical Literature Review of Biblical Literature (June 2007) was highly critical of the book saying, "Some books are written to spread knowledge, others to generate controversy. This book falls into the latter category. In his Jesus Dynasty James Tabor presents a reconstruction of the Jesus movement from a perspective that purports to be a neutral view at the facts. Unfortunately, Tabor’s view is not neutral and his ‘facts’ are not facts."[5]

Hi All! James has set out in this video what people believed about Life, Death and Immortality found in Scripture and in other writings and how it progressed down through the ages. Man in the Flesh, through Faith in the promises of אלהים ALaHaYM (God), will become ALaHaYM. A New Creation so to speak, that is Higher than the מלאכים MaLAKaYM (Angels), and be part of the Family of יהוה YaHUaH as Immortal Spirit Beings. Flesh has to Die, symbolised by Water Baptism and Symbolically Raised to a New Life, having put to Death the deeds of the Body (Sin) to walk in Newness of Life while awaiting the return of מלכי צדק MaLKaY TsaDaQ the King of Righteousness. Just like Archaeology, Faith is based on finding something that can be seen, that bears witness to the Unseen. The Demonstration of a Reality though not seen, becomes Reality through the evidence that is found. Seeing is Believing! May you be Blessed.

Thank you for this detailed reading and "translation" in modern language. To hide what Jesus message was, has cost the whole humanity many many lifes and humanity was doomed to live in the darkness of spirituality. Beside that people have been enslaved by religion, not liberated. Nearly 2000 years of spiritual evolution are nearly wasted. The Roman Catholic Church has tried to keep people in the dark. Jews suffer today because of same structure of lies. They have been told by some high ranking Jews back then, that Jesus was not the Messiah, so they could maintain their positions. To lie to someone for nearly 2000 years is just bad. Funnily the Catholic Church does not believe in reincarnation for Christians. Totally against the Messiahs message for his believers and against what God represents. I think its rather cruel but intelligent to maintain humanity in the dark. God doesn't sent his messenger/son to earth with this message for the message to be hidden for 2000 years longer. Thats not funny. Its cruel. They reversed evolution in a very vulgar manner. This wasn't planned to be so hard for humanity. People do much harm to themselves. It could have been a wonderful easy flow after spreading the good news. In times there wss no hope people did many bad things. Especially since the church invented the hell. With Jesús real message people would have not felt so alone and hopeless. The souls should have rejoyced instead they received long periods of wars and a long list of punishments. No, I don't think this was the right way to treat people. Many old people still think they will go to hell. This church induced fear comes still from this lie. Its still a very serious thing and still needs to be solved and healed with the truth.

You did a pretty good job, good for you. I'll help clarify something, about half way through you mention about how Isaiah mentions that the dead won't get this long peaceful life, petting lions and such. Well, Matthew speaks of the kingdom of Heaven but the other 3 don't, they speak of the kingdom of God, they're not the same. Matthew is primarily for the Jewish people, and this kingdom of Heaven, the new Jerusalem is about them (I believe). The dead in Christ go to Kingdom of God (all spirit realm ruled by our God himself). Some may become priest maybe for Jesus and serve during that 1000 years here but are in kingdom of God still whereas the Jews are in Kingdom of Heaven, will live 1000 years here and primary ruler will be David. Notice Matthew refers 33 times to Kingdom of Heaven and the other 3 (New Testament) mention (combined) kingdom of God 70 times. Kingdom of God will be for some of the dead and the others well, recycled (or reincarnated) into a realm of forms as they still require spiritual growth/maturity so they can be in the Kingdom of God. One consciousness, one God, all part of that body, the body of Christ. Again, good video, you did a good job with your understanding and research ... GOOD FOR YOU!!!

The NT is about death burial resurrection and life after death (to old man) IN THIS LIFE. The old man the 1st Adam must die so the new man the last Adam can arise as a new creation. The 2nd death has no power over those who expierence the 1st death, death to SELF. We must crucify our carnal flesh so the incorruptable new flesh arises. The gospels are a spiritual allegory for every person who overcomes sin and they become the Son of God. Rev 21:7. Most of what the church has taught for 1700 years is a misinterpretation. We have been blinded in part. No one else died for our sins and God is not a man, Hosea 11:9. We become a Son at our spiritual birth not physical birth as it was for Jesus clearly stated in Romans 1:3-4. Thats the miracle birth, not a physical birth. The kingdom comes without obversation and is within/neigh you. It will one day be manifest for all to see. Peace will reign on earth not just in our hearts as it currently is.

Job got banged over a jive bet with Satan. His wife lost 10 children and how many grands? She never had more children like Job (Jemima!) she was too old! How can one derive salvation from such a cruel tale?
@jdwagman
@jdwagman Жыл бұрын
How can one derive salvation from such a cruel tale? Its tough love and fear God. My Love the Son of God, an innocent and blameless man, in whom there was no falsehood, was rejected, suffered, and died on a torture stake like a common criminal. Who directed this coarse of action? Satan the Accuser whom makes accusations against the righteous. Why did God allow this? John 14:30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me. Hebrews 5:8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered. Romans 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. This is where I find salvation in such a cruel tale. Job symbolizes Jesus. A foreshadow of a reality. This is why it was published as scripture. We must conquer the prince of this world in the same way. Walk the same path as Jesus did. And then have faith in the promises made to those who conquer this world and pass the test and completes the training. We learn to fight with our spirit and mind and not with our fist. We are soldiers in battles that defend ourselves from the psychological warfare and its fog. It is faith in the promises that keep us fighting.
