I'm a Brazilian that lived in Japan for a long time and went to regular Japanese school. I will never forget the day my history teacher lectured about the Nanjing Massacre. The whole class was shocked and listened in absolute silence with a freightened look. From that day on, I started to try to study about history in another way, because the story of the winning side is never the same as the losing side. That doesn't mean that the losing side is always telling the truth, so the best you can do is look into historical documents and judge for you own. I believe most of Japanese didn't have a teacher like mine that had the courage to bring up that episode. And I thought extremely positive what he did. My view of the Japanese citizens didn't change a bit, but my view of war stories in general changed immensely.

I am a Chinese. I want to share a family memory. Around Chinese New Year 1938, Imperial Japanese soldiers occupied the city where I lived. My grandmother was nine years old. Several Japanese soldiers lived in their grandmother's house. One of them had been a watchmaker before he went to war. He was a very kind man and would often bring out some tins for my grandmother to eat. He would cry every time he showed pictures of his wife and children. He did not want to fight, but the Japanese government forced him to join the war. Finally, he was killed in a military operation. I think the Japanese government should apologize for what it did, not only to the countries that were invaded, but also to the Japanese people. I have both lots of Japanese and Chinese Mainland customers. I would say the analysis correct. Mainland Chinese people are more for conversations, they are more open and they speak English very well. I also will say that Chinese people are very polite and I do not understand the bad “tourists” stereotypes. Japanese people on the other hand are very polite too but also very quiet and they do not speak English. I am not saying that everyone should speak English, but I was surprised by he fact that Chinese people speak English and the Japanese do not. Japanese people are certainly more to themselves whereas Chinese people are more talkative with me.

My family was from the north east of Shandong province, it’s an area very close to Beijing. During the war time, my great grandfather was captured by the Japanese military and sent to the north east of China (currently Jilin province) as a slave. He worked in a forest farm and was tortured by the Japanese military on a daily basis. My great grandfather passed away in 2015. His mind was not very clear in his final years, he can’t even recognise his own grandchildren, but he constantly tells us the story about his days as a slave worker in Jilin. This is the greatest trauma in his lifetime, and this will always be a tragic memory of my family.

Japanese public school textbooks do not adequately discuss the China war. There are many intelligent Japanese students who know all about the Russia Japan war because it resulted in a victory for Japan. Its a very sad state of affairs that the govt in Tokyo is not interested in changing due to the shame involved in telling the truth. Its easier for them to focus on ancient Chinese history.

As an Italian I can assure that we are really ashamed about our fascist past and that we sided with the Germans and the Japanese in WW2. At school, textbooks state clearly: fascists committed crimes against humanity. Germans are also really ashamed of what they have done and denying Holocaust would result in a criminal prosecution and several years in prison. Now, where is this sense of shame in Japan? Is visiting Yasunuri shrine going to improve things? Textbooks? A true apology would be to do exactly as the Germans did: kneel down, ask forgiveness, build a few memorials and don't hide crimes anymore! Also don't forget that a lot of Japanese people agree with their government stance on this and other issues (like whaling).
The Japanese government has no sincerity. They have done much worse than Germany on reflecting history. They have not apologized for the war yet and their leaders still go to the Yasukuni Shrine where the war criminals are worshipped.

And our teachers told us something similar. So many of us think that it was our fault. Then why our government don’t officially apologize them for the evil things like Nanjing Massacre or comfort women issue? I guess it’s because they don’t want us to get along with China and South/North Korea. You know there’re a lot of U.S. military bases in Japan. On the contrary, we (not Chinese) know what Chinese Communist Party had done to its people in 20th century, which included couples of the worst massacres in human history. The reliable history studies revealed estimated 65 or 80 millions people had been killed by Mao Zedong and Chinese Communist Party.

I suspect there are museums in China dedicated to events like the Nanjing massacre and the like. Are there any tourist agencies dedicated to Japanese tourists to visit such museums? I think the younger generations in Japan would be curious about learning more, but their government and education system is run by older generations who refuse to admit fault, so they don't teach students thw history about it. Many people here in Europe travel to the holocaust museum located in the former Auscwitz concentration camp to learn more about what happened. I think japanese visitors to such a museum would be beneficial for the relations between the chinese and japanese people, and influence public opinion in Japan about getting the government to admit what happened instead of trying to sweep it under the rug.

that's the problem, japanese aren't curious about what their ancestors did in ww2 except that they were nuked by USA,they focus on the "we're the victim" part. go watch any videos interviewing young japanese about what they did in ww2,they choose to neglect, act like those things never happened.and while chinese visit japan a lot, japanese almost never choose china as a tourist destination,so you would know how many people actually go to these museums imagine owner of a hotel chain wrote a book denial holocast and put it in every hotel room he own,and after israel protest, they say german honor "freedom of speech",and refuse to remove the book, and many germans write letters to show their support for owner:that's what happened in 2017.japantimes: "Apa takes flak from China over books in its inns denying Nanking Massacre"

Simon William. They don't "neglect" it, they just don't know about it. I don't think you understand how tightly Japanese authorities keep a lid on events like the Nanjing massacre. Aside from the nukings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the japanese education system and media pretty much gloss over the whole of WWII. It's hard to become curious about something if you don't even know it exists or has happened. The language barrier also plays a part. It's not like the average Japanese person can just stumble across it on google, like a European citizen can do with the holocaust.

This video is in such stark contrast to their other one where they interviewed people in Japan. The Japanese interviewees all cited media bias, stereotypes, and cultural differences as the cause of tension, only one person alluded to WWII. All the people in this interview immediately thought about the wars

Actually most Chinese have a good impression on Japan, clean, polite and anime if the history is not considered, however, even when talking about some serious topics like Nanjing Massacre or Sino- Japanese War, we all know that normal people during the war, whatever the nationality, are all Innocent. Therefore, we are not and we cannot force Japanese people to apologize for their grandfather's mistakes, but the Japanese government, as the starter of the war, SHOULD say sorry to the whole Chinese nation just like the attitude of Germany to the Jews, and after that everything should be fine.

Sean That's true, and that's why the relationship between China and Japan goes so bad these years. But for normal citizens, I don't judge them, most of time the misunderstanding result from misleading through media from both countries. There's another video in this channel, which is the attitude of Japanese people think of Sino- Japanese War, and in that video, they are more like having no idea on that history rather than making stories on purpose. Of course, not all Japanese are polite especially on KZbin, if they use some offensive words, we don't have to be kind either.

Great video as always ^^ As a Chinese American with direct family members affected by the actions of Japanese soldiers, I do not hold any hatred towards the Japanese people. It is wrong to group an entire group of people on actions taken in the past. I am, however, crticial towards the Japanese government for taking a passive stance and attempting to downplay the atrocities committed in WW2. Japanese history books lightly touch on what they did to the Chinese people, not allowing the public to know of their history and what they should learn from it.

If the Japanesegovernment honestly admits mistakes like Germany did towards Jews. Chinese must forgive Japan and make friends with Japan. (now we hate Japanese government, but likeJapanese people). 1Chinese know of the scandals of their own government, which has killed tens of millions of Chinese, information only temporarily not released, now more and more public. However, the Japanese government's announcements of Japan's scandals is becoming less and less public. This is different. 2The whole world said "Nanking Massacre", only the Japanese government said "Nanking incident". We know too much about the Japanese government's evildoing, but Japanese people are not clear. Check Wikipedia in English more information. 3Have you seen the video about the Japanese prime minister who said, "I'm so sorry” on KZbin? I've only seen the Japanese Prime Minister say "excuse me." They avoid the word "sorry". 4In Germany, the Nazi flag is a crime now, but the rising sun flag is still a very important position in japan now. That's the difference. I believe that if Germany were to use Nazi flags as an important position, no country in Europe would forgive Germany. The Asian countries, except China and Korea, forgive Japan because they are too weak and spineless. 5Japanese government put The Japanese government took the war criminals of the world war as gods, worshipped them in the temples, and made a public worship every year by the head of state. What does this mean? If the German Chancellor visits the church every year to worship the Nazis, he puts the Nazis near Jesus. Will the Europeans forgive the Germans? BTW, Japanese government not only do bad things like what I said to China, but also did bad things to other Asian countries. But just China & Korea fight for this

Most if not all Japanese people I have encountered in Japan are very courteous and friendly. I personally only have a problem with their government leaders (their lack of public remorse of what they did to their Asian neighbors during the world wars, how they sugarcoated the wars and left the Japanese society blinded from the atrocities their military committed, and how they publicly demand victimized countries to remove statues for honoring the true victims of the wars because they feel offended towards it.)

China and Japan have a thousand-year relationship. In ancient times, China was a cultural teacher to Japan. the relationship has become very bad only since modern times. Because China has weakened in that time, Japan has forgotten the relations of the past millennium. They want to expand their territory, so they launched a war of aggression. The fundamental problem is that they don't recognize the history what they did and Japanese government even consecrate the Nazis as a hero. They cannot be as upright as Germany.
@thelastdefenderofcamelot56236 жыл бұрын
that is a false statement to say Japanese government are Nazi sympathizers. Japan preserves more ancient Chinese culture than what China is today. Chinese Communist Party has destroyed 1000 years of ancient traditions and teachings in order to imbue Socialism and Communism on its own people. many Chinese are fascinated with Japan because it reminds them of the Tang Dynasty.

Super Akagi It's incorrect to say Japan preserves more ancient Chinese culture than what China is today. Japan's core culture is very different from the Chinese core culture. Japan only learned some/ maybe many superficial chinese things (clothes, architecture, hanzi, etc.), but they never learned or they wouldn't want to lean the deeper core Chinese values. One good example is a line from the movie Ip Man: 武术虽然是一种武装力量,但是我们中国武术,是包含儒家的哲理,武德,也就是仁,推已及人,这是你们日本人永远不明白的道理!因为你们滥用暴力,将武力变成暴力,去欺压别人,你们不配学我们的中国武术!

WE DON’T FORGET. Shanghai is a very internationalized city and many ppl are influenced by the Japanese culture, due to geographical and economical proximity. So it appears that most interviewees are less negative towards Japan. However if you can go a bit inland, you will hear things very differently. I personally don’t hold any bias against any Japanese individual, I believe very little does. BUT, WE WON’T FORGET WHAT YOU DID, AND WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Japanese massacred almost every town they conquered, and Nanjing is just one of the them, and even now they are still denying. Not even to mention other brutalities. We are waiting for an apology, but I don’t think we can ever get it.

This is an amazing video. I learned a lot from this vid. Okay Japanese education is really bad. I can say this as a Japanese high school student who had been in America for study abroad and had struggled when people asked me about Japanese politics and history. I didn’t know what to answer for those questions because I didn’t have any knowledge about them such as Pearl Harbor. We Japanese students are taught to learn in passive way in the school. It is very boring. That’s why we don’t discuss about it in daily and don’t have any interest in politics and history. We Japanese people have to change these problems. Recently the number of exchange students from Japan is getting bigger so I hope there will much more people who will notice that we gotta change.
USA crimes agaisnt the japanese are also horrible. Concengraton camps, unnecessary nuclear bombs on hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians... But since they won the war ans wrote history they are not depicted as vilains and Japanese forget about these crimes...

I've been to both countries many times (China and Japan) and met many wonderful people. I do believe relationships are getting better, especially as people use internet to learn more accurately and in more detail about things, and not just listen to the media. Thanks Asian boss for brining up such a difficult topic in an objective way, viewing both sides of the coin. As much as I, and many other Chinese would like to move on and truly appreciate japan and it’s culture, we are in no place to forgive Japan on behalf of too many of our ancestors who were brutally killed, tortured and dehumanized. I believe many Chinese feel the same way. 毋忘國恥,振興中華。

I am student of history but I cannot bring myself to delve too much into the Japanese war crimes. The way they treated human beings is truly disgusting, they made the Nazis look like puppy dogs. We know that the human body is 70% water because of the inhumane experiments the Japanese preformed on their captives. Truly horrifying
I’m Japanese, to be honest, my teacher told me that Nanjing Massacre has not been identified whether happened or not. I don’t believe what he said, but I know why he said it. because he didn’t like socialism. Right now, Japanese government is doing the same ways as I give this example. After they apologized, your priminister Junichiro Koizumi visit the Yasukuni Shrine, which has many criminal in WW2, and then the Osaka mayor said that 'Nanjing Massacre' never happened, the student textbook also emphasize what Japan suffer from WW2, but ignore what they did to the other Asia countries especially China and SK(or said that but not clearly about details). All these behavior that your Japanese government did could even means " I am sorry"? you think when you did a terrible things, only saying "sorry" and then is over?
