I love that you get so many owner surrenders, it shows that the owners are wanting the best for their horses. There are so many reasons a horse might need to be given up and most aren’t due to intentional neglect. Apart from some hoof issues, nearly all the horses in this episode look well fed and cared for. Well done to those owners who put their horses before a quick buck and came to you rather than auction. It’s heartening. I absolutely love these episodes with Dr Kirsten, what a beautiful soul. Thank you all for every second that you give to these beautiful horses. You’re incredible.❤

It's nice to see people surrendering horses that were still in good condition. Horse rescues are filling a desperate need for a lot of horse owners who would otherwise have no good options when life hits a rough patch. I've seen so many horses suffering from neglect over the years. It's easy to judge the owner as not caring about their horse or being lazy, but often that's not the case. What I've found is that often the owner loves their horse, but is facing health or financial issues that has made properly caring for their horse difficult if not impossible. Without rescues their only option was often their local sale barn where their old or unsound horse would likely enter the slaughter pipeline and that was something they just couldn't do. There are also tons of horse traders who will promise your old horse a wonderful home, but then they'll haul them straight to the sale barn. Their other option would be euthanizing their horse if they could afford to, but If the horse isn't suffering any major ailments and is doing pretty good that's a really hard thing to justify too. At that point these people just try to hang onto their horse and do the best they can for them, but unless there's an improvement in their situation, providing all the proper care a horse requires can soon overwhelm them. I can't tell you how many times I've found that the owner is older and dealing with serious health issues and trusting a non-horsey neighbor or friend to do their horse chores and that person doesn't have a clue what a horse needs. I used to rescue horses myself, but not to the degree you all are doing! It is an emotional roller coaster and a huge financial burden, but it's also incredibly rewarding. My hope is that with trustworthy rescues like this more owners will give up their horses before they become overwhelmed and the horse gets neglected. They can rest assured that their horse will be properly cared for and never face the slaughter pipeline. Bringing a horse back from the brink is not easy especially with older horses and it's very expensive! Surrendering the horses before they experience any neglect is the loving thing to do for the horse and it gives the horse the best chance of being adopted quickly. It also reduces the costs for the rescue enabling them to rescue more horses in need.

It's definitely important to highlight the situation from all angles. I have seen a lot of healthy or healthy ish horses being surrendered and I know those owners went inside and cried when their animals left. Life isn't black and white. It is many shades of grey, while there are bad owners out there, there are also so many who simply fell on hard times and started to struggle little by little. They are not bad people, they love their animals, they're just past the point of coping. It takes a brave person to ask for help, knowing that will mean giving up their beloved pets and we should acknowledge that..

Still catching up to the new episodes. But I gotta also comment that you guys getting so many owner surrenders speaks volumes to 1; how needed you guys are. and 2; how good your reputation is in the horse world. I watch another youtuber, who is not a rescue, but she goes to auction to pick up one or two horses from auction and usually goes for the neglected ones. rehab them, and rehome them, just to do some good. And on one of the videos the previous owner of said horse had contacted her, because she had to send her horse to auction due to financial issues, and she was sure her beloved horse had ended in the slaughter pipeline (it had). But now he was doing so good and was super healthy and happy. So by the owner surrendering you also gives them peace of mind :) Also give that poor man some rest about the tractor! He clearly have done a good job lol. some bumps and lumps are just good luck on farming/work equipment. it's going to get muddied up on first use anyways. (I know you are joking with him ofc, but still, he did a wonderfull job!)

Giving these beauties another chance of a good life, is fantastic and I hope every one turns out happy and healthy and spends the rest of its days in that happy place. So many surrenders. One of the hardest things about your vids to watch (for me) are the Paulie-with-horse-in-the-stocks scenes. I dont like those things to start with but I get so nervous watching, fearing Paulie (&/or horse) is going to get hurt. I just have to fast-forward thru those parts. But I like the beginnings where we get to see what Nate is working on. 🏆💗
@PonyTalesRefuge
@PonyTalesRefuge Жыл бұрын
A lot of people don't like the stocks but it is needed for the large horses. Drafts are too heavy to hold their feet up on their own. The stock gives them the capability of leaning on the chains and boards to help pick their feet up. It is also hard for sore horses, and the stock again, helps them be able to take weight off of the painful feet to help get them done properly and feeling better again!

HUGE Draft! I would feel better for Paulie's safety if those chains were a heck of a lot more robust. The really big guys need stocks that are extra heavy duty built and can take it if a tantrum happens. I have heard some awful stories about farriers getting really badly injured as well as the horse if the stocks are not specifically made for these big weight guys. I used to visit my Sister in Ohio where there were a lot of Amish and a good number of really serious injuries would happen as they would try to do their own hoof work. It might have been on a old Dr Pol show that he told the Amish man who had some big guys like this one, that he wasn't going to come do ANYTHING much less ask a farrier to come unless they built a stock that would hold an elephant!

You always got to remember, the Amish have an 8th grade education. Never any more. Thats age 13. When i think about what i learned by age 13, even though you learn stuff outside school, you start to think about how the Amish dont understand science, breeding, a lot of other modern information on animal care. They are literally not allowed to use modern information or methods in some sects

I really love everything you do. I got aquainted with your work through Horse Plus when you went for some mentoring. I would like to make one suggestion though, if I may. I have heard you make several slurs toward Amish about their treatment of horses. Not all of the Amish are that way. Some of them have great respect for their horses because they depend on them for so much of their life style. Plus, it's just not right to slam someone because they are different than you. Besides that, it's very unprofessional for a " business " type situation. Just my opinion
@PonyTalesRefuge
@PonyTalesRefuge Жыл бұрын
Agreed that there are definitely good Amish folk out there. We even know some and they agree with us on how awful so many of them treat their horses. However, the other ones we encounter and are dumping their abused and neglected horses at the auctions are not good people. We are not "slamming" because they are "different". It is because so many treat their horses like machines and throw them away once they've run them into the ground. If you watch some of our other videos, you would see this abuse in action at the auctions.

Curious. I notice that the vet uses the same thermometer on all the horses without washing it or cleaning it off. Is that OK, meaning isn't it a concern to pass parasites and stuff from one horse to another? And, it appears she goes from one horse's mouth to another without washing her hands. Same concern. At dog shows looking at the bite causes the passing of all kinds of stuff like anything that is contagious. Maybe she washes her hands between mouths, but that pocket of her must really stink and not be sanitary? Not criticizing but rather just curious.

Most animals don't like their mouths played with. In horses, it's one way to tell how old a horse is by the grooves in their teeth or how warn the teeth are. Since horse's tongues go over their teeth, it can hide ulcers, sharp teeth, worn teeth and more. So they are usually moved out of the way to see the teeth.
