I saw you using this shaker box - or maybe you did a video on making one a year or two ago? Went and got a tub, cut the bottom out, built the frame and used screws from the inside to attach the parts together. Maybe someone can find that video and post it onto this one? Works great - and I only have 6 hives. Been using 8 frame boxes, but even those are getting to heavy for me at 67. Slowly switching over to nucs and going to 4 levels. Much easier on me these days. Dunno if I will get around to making a new shaker box for them? Or if there is some kinda tub with similar measurements? If I find one, I will post it here. You've probably saved thousands and thousands of hives from being mismanaged, diseased or accidentally killed off! This is by far the BEST practical bee channel for Canada and North America! Maybe the world! Thanks again for all you do and the videos you put up for us "hobbyists" to learn from.

So your process is to build up a 2 super hive fill it with larvae / comb (if not there) then right before honey flow you put a queen excluder on it... I guess it makes sense as I did this by accident with one of my hives this year and its producing more honey than the others as it has more bees. I will try that next year, I plan on building out my hive count to 20 if I find a place to put them.

How do the drones get out after they emerge? You don't have top entrances and you have excluders on.

Two questions. Do some of your tubs have an excluder attached or do you simply stack? Do you usually use a wireless or Bluetooth mic?

If you look around on KZbin, it won't take long to find vids saying that a good way to get a hive to pull queen cells out for a split is to have young latch or eggs above a queen excluder. I've tried it myself and have has no success. Putting your excluders in like you do, do you ever find that that is the case?
@ludgermerkens5 жыл бұрын
Depends on your bees, I rarely see this spontanously. But you can graft one or two cells into a box with one or two frames of brood above a queen excluder. One or two of theese cells are often accepted (rarely more) and you can then take those broodframes as a split with a nice queen cell. Added bonus - such a split (because the queen below the queen excluder can no longer lay eggs into the frames) will be broodless for a few days, before the young queen starts laying eggs, thus you can treat against (varroa) mites with oxalic acid (or even lactic acid spray) with high efficiency.

I’ve read a lot of books on rearing queens. So, no experience myself with this BUT I think what you are talking about is something that works more in the spring NOT when the main flows start. Hope that makes sense
@ludgermerkens5 жыл бұрын
@@decaturridgebees8761 Correct, this method can be used pretty early in the spring. Even before most other queen rearing methods can be used, but I see no reason, why it should stop working later in the season. The start of the main flow might be a problem, because the bees tend to build too much wax around the cells then, but if the flow is not too heavy, it should work.
@decaturridgebees87615 жыл бұрын
Ludger Merkens i think it has to do with the spring tendency to swarm. That makes sense to me but doesn’t mean I’m right. I do know of a queen rearer that does it regularly in the spring. They look for a colony that’s just started making swarm cups. Then they configure the boxes a certain way and graft. I think they only do 10 or 15 cells per colony in that config though.
@decaturridgebees87615 жыл бұрын
Ludger Merkens my 2nd graft this year i had a problem with excess wax. I have more cells being finished now and i put a blank foundation in there for them to build wax. Looks like they are doing that along with building on top of my grafting frame. The cells look good though

@SerhIIH275 жыл бұрын
yes, you are. In fact, you poison your bees using a lot of smoke ( you poison brood in cells), after that bees need several days to maintain good quality air condition needed for their existence. Don`t do that again, bees will thank you
