What The HELL HAPPENED To Killzone: Shadow Fall?

Once amongst the pantheon of Sony’s first-party offerings, now firmly on the side-lines, Guerilla Games’ Killzone series enjoyed a successful run culminating in 2013’s PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall. The early days were good - Shadow Fall was the first PS4 game to surpass one million sales, with units sold reaching 2.4 million by March 2014.
Graphically speaking, Killzone: Shadow Fall still looks incredible, and with a few neat ideas, gameplay tweaks, and a robust multiplayer system the overall experience was decent too.
Thing is, Killzone: Shadow Fall has been largely forgotten in the decade since release. This feature attempts to provide an explanation as to why the series trailed off following Shadow Fall’s release, discusses its shortcomings, and points out the stiff competition it faces from other more well-known FPS titles.

The warzone game mode was my favorite FPS game mode of all time. It was 7 different commonly known game modes with a 5 minute timer all in one match, if a team won a particular mode it would earn them a point and it came down to best of 7 I believe.

I remember that too almost exactly a decade ago, man time flies. I am impressed by Guerilla Games regarding what the Horizon Franchise has become. I only wish there was hope for the future of Killzone. It has a following and it would definitely do some sales damage if they launched a PS5 exclusive. One can only hope!

Shadowfall wasn’t bad by any means, but it was entirely forgettable! I really liked the music though, and the new abilities were a neat idea. The campaign was pretty fun, but I never touched the MP though.

the MP was more of that recipe honestly. Kind of dull. Shadowfall surely was a Good Looking game and some of the weaponry was fun to play with, but like you said the story is forgettable.

I am not sure why it is so hated, I mean, the story was forgettable? I don't recall Killzone 2's story being that memorable and that game was praised by critics and fans alike. For me, both games' stories were window dressing for the intense action. Also, wouldn't disliking that they added stealth to the game be an objective opinion? gamingbolt talks as if its a literal flaw in game design. Overall, I'd call Shadow Fall a pretty decent game.

I thought the campaign was rubbish. The gameplay just wasn't fun. Too much sneaking around with no banter with other characters and crappy puzzles wedged in. Even when the shooting began, it's was tedious unlike the others that were straight up fun. Looked pretty, but that's about it.

This one and number 4 and then I think liberation are my least played Killzoned. Mercenaries for the Vita was so good I was so surprised by it. I truly hope they're working on like the first trilogy remastered or remade

What happen was it was rushed. Nice graphics but poor campaign plus unfinished MP got it low ratings at launch. GG did eventually patch the MP for competitive players after many months. People with patience ended up getting an alright MP game. Since than Sony never did an FPS again lmao.

I had kz 2, 3, and 4. I forgot all about 4. I remember now, 3 and 4 were a blast to play online. kz2 didn't have as much going on. If they released it on steam I would buy it again. I loved the lmgs, snipers, sentry guns, grenades. Unfortunately it fell into obscurity

Why Sony hasn't ported Killzone 3 to PSVR yet is a complete mystery. (And I say K3 because, as a result of the Stereo 3D aspect of that game, it already had certain elements for VR within its code compared to K2). Heck- a PSVR 2 port of Killzone Mercenary would be more than possible considering they had that game running on Vita.

They could reboot the gameplay and make it third person shooter with proper stealth gameplay and make more like ghost recon future soldier. And forces on four classes in your control of ordering, medic, heavy gunner, sniper and a stealth, hacker assiasin. More like a strategy third person shooter sandbox. I want killzone game prequels the first war, rise of Helga, resistance fighters against Helga leadership and before doing a killzone 5 another prequel of why the hell would you give half of planet to Helga although that prequel would help explaining would help well.

Its aged really well alongside its competition: COD Advanced Warfare. Graphics in the industry have really slid backwards since then. Shadow fall just sucks to play with a stupidly huge controller deadzone. Would make a better VR title with the OWL it introduces and a reworked stealth system than a console shooter. Because the stealth mechanics in game were half assed/DO NOT WORK, and the paid PVE DLC mode Intercept is not friendly at all to solo players. Because its not simply surviving waves of enemies. Its Surviving waves of enemies while playing territories and holding 3 hills while fighting the controller to actually aim at anything. Compared to Halo's firefight and Gears of war's horde/beast modes which were both way more fun. Fortnite didn't come out until 2017 after MANY delays. Don't even start with this "battle royale ruined everything" bullshit. Shadow fall fell on its own sword back in 2013 well before battle royales were even a genre yet.

I'm going to preface this by saying I have never played a Killzone title, so all my experience with the series comes from watching videos of or about it. That being said the concept for Killzone: Shadow Fall was very interesting. A bit more so to me than those that came before it, simply because it was different. The first few Killzone games were very clearly inspired by World War 2, and Shadow Fall is very clearly inspired by the Cold War. And to this day we really don't seem to have a game that captures the tension of the Cold War properly, except for maybe DEFCON. So I was hopeful that Shadow Fall would be a bit more interested in stealth, subterfuge, and intelligence gathering, but it really wasn't. The very first mission you go on you kill dozens of Helghast and destroy a monument to one of their leaders in the process. Not exactly subtle. And this kind of forced shooting gallery the game turns into really doesn't mesh that well with the story it's trying to tell.

Shadowfall needed another year in the oven to smooth over these issues. This game is 6/10. It could have been 8/10 with more time. Theres no way it would be 9/10 or 10/10 because the studio was clearly exhausted on the killzone universe and wanted to move onto horizon zero dawn. A whole decade of Killzone. They are due fore a new Killzone.

The problem is the last one sold well due to the hype but it dissapointed allot of people. No one would buy the next killzone if it came out as the story that everyone used to love was ruind and scramble. The story can not be fixed. So they wont waste there money when they have horizon to make them money. Its a shame though as the first 3 were an amazing and one of a kind experience.
