What The Hell Happened To Max Payne?

Upon release, Max Payne was pushing the boundaries of modern game mechanics. With the Noir setting, bullet time sequences, and overall grit that Max Payne explored, it's a shock that the series didn't last as long as developers thought. With each Max Payne sequel, it seemed there was interest, but sales numbers told a different story. So what the hell happened to Max Payne after all these years?

Terrible marketing. It was pretty much announced right before it came out(and not very well). The few diehard fans of the franchise at that point caught wind of word of mouth of how insultingly short it was. A friend of mine who was looking forward to it chose to just rent it and he beat in one sitting in about 5 hours and though he enjoyed it was grateful he didn't buy it because of the length and lack of replay incentive.

I think on big critic MP2 got at the time was that it was too short 6-8h of gameplay, this was still the era when people expected at least 20-30h of gameplay even in single player campagins. I always thought MP quality 8h gameplay beat the 30h mediocer streched out gameplay every other game was pushing at the time, but rest of the world didn't agree.

@@flemit35 yea if the first Max Payne had the same length as MP2 it would have stopped right around when you kill Boris Dime(on the ship level). I have no idea how the script was "double the size of the first game" yet it's like 3 hours shorter. That always confused me.

The third game was pretty divisive because of the direction Rockstar, not Remedy, was taking the story in. It was an odd choice going back to a retread of events with an iconic character forgetting the lessons he learned from the 2nd installment and going back to rock bottom doing dumb shit. 2012, as okay of a year as it was, also had seen a lot of copycat COD multiplayer games that ended up sticking poorly with most people regarding first impressions, regardless of anyone's opinion of the actual multiplayer. What can I say? Rockstar sucks at marketing. They could've eased players into the setting and given a better reason for Max's departure from the NYPD in their prologue comic, but they didn't. As for the second game, it was also another retread for some of the fans. Remedy tried to fix up loose ends, but in the end, who was really asking for a sequel?

Crappy twitchy bro - shooters....Not much has changed in the past decade - 99/100 "gamers" only play garbage like Fortnite, COD and Apex legends. ....Filthy casuals doing what filthy casuals do - Throwing hundreds of dollars at low budget dumpster fire cash grabs.

@@troypowers750What kind of an asshole cares about marketing??? A good game is a good game ... I'll never be able to wrap my head around this..... Cyberpunk spent 130 million marketing Cyberpunk - and like 70 million on actual development - This industry is a sad pathetic joke. The game sells 8 million day one - and then an additional 12 million BEFORE any bug fixes..... Gamers get what they deserve. 20 million people willingly bought a game they knew for a fact was completely unplayable. It's no wonder the general public thinks of gamers as social degenerates. Its unbelievable, how the rest of the games i bought in the future never had such an impact... the fact that someone gave a videogame as a present was more valuable. It happened the same to Driver, they created the formula that we now know as a GTA style game, to then disapear without even being recognized (by the public anyway) by what they had created.
@MG-wk2eh
@MG-wk2eh Жыл бұрын
To be fair, that's not true. Driver 1 came out in 1998 and GTA1 came out in 1997, although it was in 2D. 3D open world games were not possible back then due to hardware limitations, but they were obviously an inevitability. I loved Driver 2, but it had a lot of issues (horrible framerate etc) because it was too ambitious for the PS1. Even then the game needed two discs. One of my favourite gaming 'what ifs' is what if Reflections had instead decided to develop Driver 2 for the PS2 instead and released it at the same time (November 2000, 11 months before GTA III came out). They could've done more with the game (like adding gunplay and ability to kill pedestrians) and because expectations for 3D open world games hadn't been set yet, it could've been a major hit that really stole some of GTA III's coming thunder. I still think GTA would've won in the end, though, because Rockstar didn't get to where they are now by luck but because they're talented and they make outstanding games. Their games go from strength to strength. Driver was finished when they fucked up DRIV3R.. the same year GTA San Andreas came out.
@YOEL_44
@YOEL_44 Жыл бұрын
@@MG-wk2eh That is very much true, GTA would have disapeared without pain nor glory if it wasn't for the 3D, in fact they even aknoledge the rivalry in the series by introducing Tanner Two Faces in GTA 3, making a reference to Driver's undercover cop Tanner. I know the brand name came before, but those have nothing to do with the idea of a GTA game the general public has now.

Max Payne 1 was my first ever PC game, and the love started there. I replay the 3 games every once in a while. Sometimes I play multiplayer with a friend. I loved all the trilogy. 3 gameplay is superb, that's why is considered the best 3rd person shooter of all time by many people. Although I'd like a new game just because I love Max, it wouldn't make much sense considering how the 3rd one ended. The only "negative" thing for me is that I use to find hard to understand the transition from the 2nd game to the 3rd. I read the comic but still, it's hard for me to understand why Max fell again, considering the "I had a dream of my wife, she was dead, but it was alright" line from the ending of the 2nd game. Max had finally accepted everything and it seemed like he was ok with himself. I would've liked to know what were the original plans for Max Payne 3 if Remedy had continued in charge of the development. Anyway, best trilogy of all time. P.S: James McCaffrey has the best voice in this world lol

The OG game was great but Max Payne 2 is my favourite, I stil lhave it on PVC now. I never did play Max Payne 3 as I was worried that if it wasn't Remedy making the game that it wouldn't feel like a Max Payne game should. After all these years I may give it a try and see.

What the hell happened to Max Payne? Well, he got shot at a million times, he shot thousands of people dead, he drank gallons of whiskey, he took boxes of painkillers. He must be dead by now. Max Payne: Oi!

Nothing happened. A good series that know when and where to end, that's it. Max Payne himself is tired, let him rest.

Max Payne 1 was amazing for its time. But 2 was such a big step up. It fixed alot of frustrations I had with the first game. Shame that it didn’t get the sales numbers it deserved.

Personally, other than a remake of the first two games, Max Payne doesn't need anymore games, the story ended just fine in the third game. Maybe a series surrounding Mona Sax up to her story in Max Payne 2?

I think that the Max Payne series ended right where supposed to, we saw Max's story and his development as a character so I don't think there's need for another game

I'll take a remake/remastered Max Payne 1 over any continuation. As someone who grew up playing Max Payne, against his parents' wishes, 2 fell because it wasn't Sam Lake's face anymore. We all felt weird because it said Max Payne but didn't look like Max Payne. While we had laughed at the weird expression of the defective detective, we grew to love and accept it. Then they changed him. It was Max Payne in story, but not in name. Like if Terminator 2 had been played by Stallone. The writing would have been there and the undertones, but not what made us love the franchise to begin with. We went through hell with Payne in the first game, we grew into him only to be ripped apart like a simease twin being ripped from us like by a cannibal. They replaced him with someone else and the story that came before was no longer connected, emotionally or visually.

Sam Lake said in interview that they sold the IP so that they can invest in the future also they were already tired of making only max payne since the process had taken 7 years already. Therefor Max Payne 3 was not developed by them.

4:47 It was 100% the piss poor marketing. I still remember it seemed like Max Payne 2 came out of nowhere. I was in Books A Million one day and just happened to glance over and saw "MAX PAYNE 2: THE FALL OF MAX PAYNE" plastered over the cover of an issue of Game Informer and nearly lost it with excitement. Then I discovered the game was releasing in like the next 2 months. On top of that, years later I was talking with a coworker about our favorite video games and he mentioned Max Payne was one of his favorite games and how he and his brother played the hell out of it until the disc stopped working. I then said it was a shame how people slept on Max Payne 2. He looks at me confused and tells me he had no idea there was even a sequel. This was in 2007 or 2008.

Man are they even gonna remake it anymore? I know it’s a business and people want money but I genuinely could not play a remake without James’ voice. If it was AI I would actually hate it even more. This whole situation just sucks 😢 RIP James

corrections: the first max Payne was published by Rockstar and remedy made it with 3D realms but also remedy sold the rights after the poor sales of MAX PAYNE 2 which was my favourite in the trilogy after that they sold the rights.

I loved the first two games, especially the second. Hated the third one. I was interested when I first heard a movie was coming out, but when I viewed the cast list and found out how many of the characters were missing, I figured it was going to suck.

As someone who really loved the whole series: I'm not altogether sorry there won't be another game. The ending of 3 was a perfect send-off for the character, who was finally able to find peace and walk off into a sunnier future.
