In the book, Rowling sort of explicitly said that Hufflepuff are individuals that possess no notable abilities. It's literally spelled out in the book when Helga Hufflepuff said she'll take the rest that doesn't get accepted into the other 3 other houses.

Ravenclaws are for those who are exceptionally creative, intelligent and open minded. The sorting hat considered putting Hermoine into Ravenclaw, but I think she was too closeminded to belong there (just look at how she gets huffy about Divination and Luna's belief's when they first met), which is why the sorting hat probably decided that Gryffindor was a better fit.

You really should make a Ravenclaw song. Truly the Most overlooked house. Everyone here's just talking about Hufflepuffs and how it's the best and No one likes them and everything.
