From a personal perspective it was rotten move. From a plot perspective I feel this is something they could have used more. Why not make Susie fess up. So many ways to go from here. Midge could go fixer mode and say she will do whatever it takes to cure Susie and earn back the money. Maybe they could let Susie give a rant about how Midge doesn't need the money because she has rich parents to fall back on and doesn't really understand what it is like for someone like Susie to be cashless. Do they break up and we get to see the two struggle til they decide they are better as a team? So much ammo but Susie is just able to inherit her grandmothers house and get the money back.

Something tells me Midge and Lenny start something together...comedically that is. The whole "A Star Is Born" thing. As he starts to spiral down, Midge will ascend and in the process try to help him, but as we know in '66 it will be too late. Also, there are theories going around that she's loosely based on Joan Rivers?

The moment Reggie told Midge to talk about Shy I knew where it was going but then after seeing her act I didn't think it was that bad. But I guess that was the point considering the time period. That kind of humor is just normal between my friends and I but back then it was probably not. I still don't think it was that bad or outed him as gay or anything. They were just jokes. I thought she danced around it pretty well without taking it too far. I'm also kind of glad. I really got tired of having to see another one of Shy's sets after Midge's performance. I kept thinking every time, "Are they really going to do this each time Midge introduces him?" Do they shoot this in NYC at all? I'd love to get a spot on the show as an extra or hell even a speaking role.

The final episode was not unrealistic. 1. Midge is a very self involved and sheltered girl who is starting to become aware of the world outside of her upper west side bubble. 2. Her jokes highlighted Shy's flamboyance. She was not outing him. 3. Reggie gave her the wrong advice while she was nervous after realizing that she "stole" someone's spot. Someone she admires and looks up to. On top of that Reggie didn't take responsibility. His lack of accountability was a low move. But I understand why he did it. However he should have been sincere with Shy and let him make a decision after giving the singer all the facts. This is definitely a good lesson for Midge but she is learning and she is improving as a person. People learn by making mistakes and correcting them.

She definitely outed him. All of the jokes she made were all stereotypes associating with gay men. She just wasn't aware how inappropriate and dangerous it is to joke about something like that. Shy might lose his career and possibly his life if people find out the jokes are true. I don't think Reggie should be blamed as much as Midge though. He did tell her so joke about everything, but his examples stopped at throwing tantrums and being annoyed at other staff members, and definitely not someone's deep secrets.

@@NguyenNguyen-ro9xl I wonder if you've ever met anyone like Midge in real life. I have and they are super clueless. In fact most North Americans I've met are this way. They are clueless. Even if they have good intentions, they tend to say and do very negative things towards minorities without being conscious about it. In her mind, she's not outing him. She thinks is OK to joke about his flamboyance like she could do it in the white American crowd. Period. She just didn't know that the audience is different.

@@Cubannerd that's exactly what I said. She was clueless. She wasn't aware how dangerous it was to joke about something like that. She UNKNOWINGLY outed him. Also I'm pretty sure she didn't just joke about his flamboyance. Notice when she said "he had a guy for almost everything", then she fixed and said "no he got a guy for everything", like come on that was obvious. Those jokes weren't directly pointing at being gay, but they definitely hinted at multiple gay stereotypes. Someone who's sharp might figure it out, and it would be terrible if that happened. Also in the last scene she didn't deny outing him, she even apologised and promised she'll never do it again. Even she acknowledged that she crossed the line. 😂

If only Midge had poked fun of Shy Baldwin's poor eating habits and his tantrums involving tossing food at people. After all, this was a time when an entire generation of children was told to eat what was on their plates because there were people starving in some far-off country. That and given Jewish moms' reputation for making sure everyone is eating enough (this can also be said of just about every mom), she could have gone with that.

My guess, and it is totally and 100% completely a guess, is that the character Carol Keene (played by Liza Weil and apparently based on the Wrecking Crew bass player Carol Kaye) will have an impact on Midge's career choices. The real life Carol Kaye got tired of touring on the road, and shifted over to doing studio session musician work. That way she could still work but stay home with her family. So, a story encounter with the character Carol Keene could be the inspiration for Midge to accept a role on a TV sitcom so that she could continue to work as a comedian, but also stay in one place with her family.

In ancient Greek tragedies, a hero's fall was usually preceded by a display of hubris. With that as backdrop, as season 3 wore on it became almost predictable that Midge was going to "fall from grace" because of her growing over-confidence and inflated sense of self-importance; Susie's failing was that she wasn't there to whisper in Midge's ear the old adage that "all glory is fleeting."

That reminds me of how the first episode of Downton Abbey referenced the Titanic sinking. What may be more likely is that Lenny dies sometime in the show's run, which would also be extremely sad. If that happens, I have a feeling that would rock Midge to her core and make her reevaluate the career she has ahead of her in standup. Everything would come full circle, as Lenny would be the deciding factor for her to back away from the world of showbiz much like he was the deciding factor for her to breakup with Benjamin.

I feel a bit torn in this season. On one hand we have a lot more female roles really taking lead and becoming more independent. Like mei. She walks in commanding a room and is very much independent. Ever episode for me really crept up this idea about female independence. Like with Midge’s mom quiting her trust fund. That whole scene just established a lot of the glass walls women still faced even today sometimes. When her brother said “Well grandmama started the company so of course she had to be on the board” Like they are aware their whole business was founded by a single woman but refuse to let another one come in again and rather have a LITERAL child on the board that an adult. I found it hard to cheer for midge this season just cause of lack of awareness she has for others around her. She wants to be this rugged comedian but she’s not. She still walks around weather by choice or not thinking she’s going to have her “life” back soon. It solidified more for me when she went to get her apartment back from her in law. She needs to face reality that not everything is fair and ok and she can’t just talk her way out of things. Sometimes being personable doesn’t solve all things.

I hope Midge learns her lessons this time and come out better...I had the same conundrum about the whole Benjamin situation where it doesnt make any sense for him to be out of the picture. Like he seems like a cool guy who wouldnt mind anything Midge does and she just dropped him like it was nothing. That confrontation was painful to watch. Also the Shy outing act ...it seemed fine and I even laughed during the act and I didnt think Shy wouldve minded the twinky diva jokes ...and was shocked he did. Forgot he was so touchy and realized it was really risky thereafter. Just hope he wouldve talked to Midge ..so sad. Cant wait for next season 😍

Honestly the moment shy told midge he was gay and all that, I knew knowing that would turn against her because she has a big mouth. But damn, I didn't even think her performance was out of line because it didn't give away he was gay at all. However, she shouldn't have touched that sensitive information. She could have joked about anything but that. Why did she have to joke about that?? Should be pretty obvious. I wouldn't come near that with ten foot pole if I was her. Should go without saying.

Midge was unbelievably insensitive and clueless at the Apollo. But getting thrown off the tour by Shai's manager, the same guy who encouraged motor mouth Midge to rake "his boy" over the coals! Rough. However, just watching that tiny biplane take off, made me think of the danger taken on by singers and actors back in the day. My guess is that plane comes down a few seconds after take off. Mrs. Maisel always comes out the winner, the creators love her too much. Every set back is just another opportunity for Miriam Maisel.

Someone with deeper understanding please help me? 😖 in Season 3 ep. 6 around the 55-56 minute Shy is singing ‘I Think You’re Wonderful’ song and he looks to Reggie and they both have this look. Then it goes to Reggie and it looks like sadness and maybe helplessness? But was that look from Reggie that understanding of what happened to Shy? Or is it something more?
@spurtydarbhamulla1130

Reggie guess what happened to Shy. This is proved by the fact that Shy tells Midge that a similar thing has happened to him before , and that he promised Reggie it won't repeat. Remember everyone in Shy's band says its common for Shy to go missing now and then?

Also the band says it's a stool set. Implies that its common for Shy to suddenly change the set to a sitting down kind of set. Just my analysis, not sure how exactly Shy managed to cover all that earlier, without the help of some make-up tricks that Midge did on him in that episode..

While I agree what Midge said about shy was bad, I wouldn't describe it as "outing". She was definitely treading the lines of outing, but outing doesn't seem like the right word. I mean, would the audience have taken Shys sexuality into question? Maybe, maybe not. You gotta remember, all his fans are boy crazy teenage girls. Would I describe as a more a damage to his reputation? definitely. And I understand completely why his feelings got hurt, they were jokes commenting on his flamboyance, and obviously it was 1960. But I don't think that crowd would've completely clocked in the fact he was gay, even with the jokes. But its treading a line. My point is, I get why people might interpret it either way. My opinion? Midge should've been WAYY more careful with what she was saying, but Its obvious she didnt mean any harm or to out him, she was nervous, intimidated by someone she idolised and was being called a thief, she felt out of place. Does that excuse her behaviour? I wouldn't say so, no. But it does at least give an explanation as to why she mightve spoken without thinking, wasnt in her right mind etc, etc. What I am in confidence of, however, is how Reggie knew she was nervous, told her to riff about Shy and then after it hurt Shy's feelings (which is completely ubderstandable) he cut her off, not taking into account how he gave her bad advice when she was completely spooked. And anyway, I think itd be a lot different if Midge wasnt at all remorseful. But she very clearly was, she cared about Shy, Reggie knew this. So when she definitely shouldve known better, I felt bad when she couldnt make up with Shy. Excited for S5.
@lulupomegranate
@lulupomegranate Жыл бұрын
Reggie knew he fucked up, but it still doesn't excuse her. She DID out him- some of the stuff she said (friend of Dorothy, the shoes) is literal slang for gay. AT BEST Shy can home people will think she's just taking the piss, calling him gay as a joke. It is not a risk that should be taken. And Midge KNOWS how bad it is for gay men, just a while ago she cleaned blood from Shy's face because he was attacked for being gay. She didn't think, and then refused to take accountability, which is a consistent character flaw of Midge. She is strong and sweet and wants to be helpful and is generally kind, but she breezed through life on charm wealth and beauty and it left her self centered and thoughtless. That's why she derails her friend's wedding, without thinking, because she's the one that "needs" to deliver the fun. That's why she not only missed her other friend's babyshower, but also CALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF IT, putting the attention on the fact that her friend was stood up, because SHE needs to make things right rather than think and let it be for a moment and then apologize later in private. Hell, even in the first few sentences of the whole show she goes "my roommate was friendly and fat which was great, I'd have someone to eat with who wouldn't steal my boyfriend". She didn't actually MEAN anything bad by it, but if that friend, who was not invited to the wedding nor was she part of her group of friends in college, heard it, she'd feel sad because generally, it's a shitty thing to say. This is not me trying to say that Midge is a bad person, I love Midge, but she does have some big character flaws. She's a goose.

Will Midge wear a mini and go without hairspray and a hat?! The British Invasion is coming! "It's the 60's man!" ! Well, she loathes Beatniks, so hippies!? Yikes. As a devotee of this MARVELOUS show, of course I ponder what man for her? if any, what hat? which shade of shoes and lipstick for on stage, her children- Ethan seems to eat too much sugar, to sit too close to the TV and to be a bit aloof, maybe he's just a kid? I love Susie, my favorite character, not just of this show, but of all TV shows- well she is among them- I have, as a mid ager watched alot of good and bad shows over the years! so maybe I am forgetting some other stand-outs...I loathe as we are supposed too, Sophie "Lemonade" but life has bad guys and bad characters propel stories along, gotta have curves in the road! I really have wondered how Joel's parents will accept Mei, should Joel decide to make her, his steady and of course easing ourselves into a major cultural shift, Vietnam War, The Women's Movement, MAJOR WARDROBE STYLISTIC UPHEAVALS! - dear Susie, her clothes will fit in nicely and they are SO comfy- I own at least 5 newsboy caps, for bad hair days, for warm- just part of one's wardrobe like boots, an iconic piece of clothing! I feel sort of sad because for me, not being of this era, so much of the appeal lies in a "foreign realm" fantasy! As a music lover, rock and roll, Blues and Folk, I now hum Blossom Dearie- actually I already owned 2 CDs , a 4 yr jazz hiatus- should go back to a great Canadian radio station...I am happy the shows creators mentioned a Season 5!!! ( I've been hoping for months- hooked on these funny, fallible, warm, most of them, believable characters and want more, more, more. Susie- I want her to get a big, loft, a home, a real home, with character and space for - maybe a pet! a dog, everybody needs a dog AND at least 1 cat...Thanks to this great bunch of hard working actors, writers, all the talented people who make the show possible, right down to the coffee guy! Namaste. Love a fan from Canada ( as a vegetarian I can no longer enjoy poutine, French fries with cheese curds and gravy)

We Shay plot device for the riders used was insulting to the audience it was clearly a manipulation and trying to get people to stay around for the cliffhanger and see what happens next season. How many people watched her stand up at the Apollo and weren’t cringing at what she was saying? Why didn’t Reggie signal her from the wings and say shut up knock it off or something? Why didn’t Reggie come up to her after her sad to say what the f do you think you were doing?Susie conveniently gone to blow up her house. And the Casa Blanca airport scene where she left while Shy goes flying off into the sky. And Joel and MEi? And that character is not particularly likable and I don’t know why he does because she I was playing him. She’s a hustler. I just don’t understand Why Joe will be played like that.and who cares about Imogene and Archie?The only thing I hope is that rose and Abe get to stay in that apartment. I don’t like them out of that kind of apartment I don’t like Shirl and Moish. Maybe Rose will get her trust fund back so that they can keep The apartment.And her rejecting her trust fund the season aren’t their papers you’re supposed to sign in order to not get it anymore I don’t think the money stopped coming. Unless there was some sort of legality involved. When the trust is set up it takes a lot to break a trust so what the hell is that all about?I didn’t really get what was happening with Zelda this season either it didn’t make sense for her she’s rebelling and then next thing you know she’s back in her uniform what was that all about? The attraction between Lenny and MidgeThere’s bound to be played out sooner or later. I like the guy who plays Lenny.
