The dredge ship you see is the cutter suction dredge Hampton Roads. She has been working in the port for several years deepening the port for large container ships. They started a port expansion project in the late 2010s and are finished with the main project but keep finding parts they want to further deepen. When you have rival ports like Norfolk going to 56 feet so that the large ships don’t have to wait on tide and such, the port business is very competitive. With that said, the Port of Savanna has grown significantly and is now the 3rd busiest container port in the US. In addition to good port facilities, it had both good rail and road connections. Little wonder it has grown so much.

I lived in Savannah for 10 years until the spring of 2021 - this was a cool way to see this. I use to fly my drone up and down the river as well. Got some great shots of the river at 400 feet🌴

I watched the entire video. Fascinating. Staying in Savannah right now at a hotel with a partial view of the river. It’s nighttime. At the end of une video I heard the sound of a horn. It was a giant container ship going by! I’m going to try and figure out what times the next ships will come by and go out to the waterfront to watch. Thank you for this very informative, well-shot video.

Great video, am a native of Savannah, now living in NC. Have been to the port a number of times, and up and down the river with Captain Sam, I believe was his name. My grandfather was a retired Merchant Marine Captain, and during my HS years volunteered with the local Preist to pick up sailors that played soccer against the Savannah team to get off the ship and have some recreational time. I got to go along and was invited to tour a few ships. Those were the days.
