Congrats on getting onboard. It makes me laugh when you see the ladder gangway. These ships are at these ports so often it’s amazing they don’t have a better gangway. That they use. Is there a part 2 coming of the parts you didn’t show?

First, I'd like to send out a big thanks to the American Steamship Company (ASC) for inviting Vibe with Mike to visit the American Century. I know this fulfills a dream Mike never thought would be possible. This was all made possible by Kevin and David from ASC corporate in New York. Again, thanks so much fellows for helping spur this unique partnership. Together with Mike's channel, many many folks from all over the world will learn more about ASC and Great Lakes shipping. Mike from ASC did a fantastic job leading the tour of the American Century. He answered numerous questions and provided neat insights into the deck operations of this massive footer. It's obvious to me Mike enjoys his job and represents his company in a very professional manner. I really enjoyed learning from Mike and look forward to more of his tours in the future. And a big shout-out and thanks to chief steward Jennifer. I agree with Mike in that the galley looks so clean and organized. Geez....I'm hungry right now just thinking about all those yummy dishes!! And much of it home-made. Thanks so much Jennifer for describing your important role on the American Century. Good food helps make for a happy crew. As one of Mike's Boat Friends, I can't wait to learn more and more from these types of onboard videos. There is no question they help personalize the Great Lakes shipping industry. Yes the ships are awesome, but without the ASC folks like Mike and Jennifer the ships wouldn't move....they wouldn't haul, and they wouldn't have a reason to salute with their horns. Safe travels to the Captain and crew of the American Century.

Hi Mike boat friends ! Excellent ! Excellent! Ship tour ! You took a lot of people on board a ship for their first time today ! What i noticed was the trimming lights and the skill of the guys loading the ship ! moving the chute back and forth to keep the ship on an even keel Looked like there might of been just a little list to starboard going out the channel ? unless it is camera refraction ? Could be an army of guys down below shoveling like crazy to level it out again ! They can also level it out with water in the ballast tanks on the one side Something to look for in the future ! when a ship comes and goes checkthe trimming lights to see if it is leaning over or not ? They also trim fore and aft The moden galley on a new ship is impressive i noticed rails sort of cafeteria style to slide food trays on The ship is so big it hardly ever moves would take a lot to get stuff rooling around. Have a great day

At lower lakes in the past the crew would work 90 days get. 16 days off then switch ships Tho each ship is the same each ship has it own differences By rotating the crew they become proficient on all the different ships and if needled can be moved seamlessly from one ship to another

What a great, informative briefing on the ship’s operations. Thanks for including the train shot but I need to correct your statement about the “freight train departing”. The train you shot was actually a loaded coal train arriving at the coal dock. Arriving, loaded trains go around the coal storage area on the outer loop then transition to the inside loop on the west side of the facility. The coal cars are rotary-dumped, several at a time, back on the east side. The train you shot is BNSF train C SCMSUD. (Coal loads from Spring Creek Mine, MT to Superior, WI docks. Three trains per day depart Spring Creek on this route to supply Detroit Edison. The empty trains return as symbol E SUDSCM. Thanks again for the great tour and ALL your great videos.

At the age of 86, I still recall my fondest memories of being on the lake freighter SS Huron. One of the 4 Wyandotte Chemicals ships. My father, Captain Clement F. Morreau asked me, as a teenager, if I would Ike to have a trip with him. It was the greatest thing I have ever enjoyed. The crew, the food, I covered every square inch of the ship, they taught me ow to steer the ship and I was able to steer from the Huron river it ship in lake Huron to he marker at Alpena Michigan and only varied 2 degrees form port to starboard. I even shoveled coal and many other adventures. I loved the bum boat in Toledo, the way the loaded the coal. The fresh air out in the lakes. I could go on and on. At one time or another my Dad was Captain of all four of their ships.

Thanks sooo much Mike and the ASC!! Mike, when you did a 360 degree spin on the deck of the American Century, I expected to see a film crew tagging behind you...your videos look so professional!! The train that we saw leaving the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal dock was one of 6 or 7 that were needed to fill this massive ship. That is between 750 and 800 rail cars of coal...if my assumptions are right. I'd love to hear from our ASC Boat Friends on how close my estimate is. Thanks again, Mike!

Hey Mike and All THE GLOBAL BOAT FRIEND NATION. Looks like a beautiful day in Dtown as was here in Bismarck albeit a little windy. What a great day for all of he Boat Friends thanks to he great folks and fellow Boat Friends with ASC to allow us to come on board. You really get a true perspective as to how big these vessels are, and easy to see they are over 3 Football fields long from bow to Stearns. Interesting to see the coal is really pulverized down, and to see the loading system which is much different than the system used for taconite pellets. The iron ore pellets are basically dropped down chutes by gravity into the cargo hold. The coal,is loaded using a Buhler type system using conveyor belts which the operator on board drops the coal straight down into the hold. Cargill B was the first elevator on the harbor to use the Buhler system for, loading grain, and now I see they are doing the same for coal. This coal comes from Colstrip Montana, and two unit trains per day come through Bismarck each day going to Duluth. Looking down the Bow of the vessel while loading I see the old Elevator S, but is do not know what it is called now but I spent a lot of time working in that elevator when i lived there. Also interesting was the Galley, and the cook was proud of her station as she should be. Sounds like she really tries to keep things changing so no one gets bored, but there are some favorites as she mentioned. This was a great video Mike, really got to see a whole different side of the equation for sure. Three long and two short for ASC for allowing us to come aboard, and safe passage for the good ship and crew, as well as a safe shipping season. Hello once again my, and many others, friend. I'm going to use the words double jealous right now because I am not sure of another word that says such as to how I, and I'm sure many others, are feeling of you. This is truly amazing because we get a behind the scenes look at what the workers of the American Century, and many other ships, do, and not only that but the icing on the cake of what different parts of the ships do, all for us. If I've not mentioned it before I love trains and airports by them, but what you've shown, ships and trains, reaches a whole other level, and it tells me that you listen to and know what your friends like; hand shake and thanks on that. Noow I tell you what would be awesome, to be a guest of Mike and be able to eat in the galley of what I'm sure is great prepared food. This country needs more videos of people like Mike and Jennifer working behind the scenes to know what they do, but it also gets them known, she seems very happy to have been made known like this, kudos again to you my friend. The view you had on the deck I'm sure was great. My wife and I went to Charleston, SC for our 25th wedding anniversary and toured the USS Yorktown CVS-10 AirCraft Carrier, and it was exciting, so I know that experience. To be short, BIG THANKS to you once again for another greta video and The ASC for allowing such. Thanks to all the men & women on these ships that work so that we have. Many happy and safe voyages Jennifer.

Oh my goodness, this has to be one of the coolest comments I’ve read! So much information and so much positivity! Tim, there wasn’t one second that I was on the ship that I didn’t think about you and all of the other Boat friends. I thought about what you would want to see. I thought about that you would want to hear answered. It was a delight to talk to the chief Cook on the ship as well. That was really fun. Don’t worry, there are many more opportunities and things we will do with these ships on board. I really appreciate you taking time out of your Saturday to leave such a great comment.

I want you to take a look at this video that I posted today. Tell me what you think after you watch it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6m2eGNvrr-rbbMsi=roivRoHQJDXLTnJh
