Their band members -- John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr -- are not just music icons but they are often associated with being leaders of their era's youth and sociocultural movements.
But what if we told you that there are things about this storied band that you don’t know about? It’s why we’ve created a video that looks at facts the world never knew about the Beatles. Come take a magical mystery tour with us.

I disagree. After decades of hearing Lennon-McCartney, people think that sounds better because they haven't heard McCartney-Lennon for decades. Who cares about how it rolls off the tongue anyway? And as teen boys both John and Paul shook hands and agreed that whoever wrote the majority of a song would get the first name credit listing. Their first album,'Please, Please Me', all of the original Beatles songs, which were primarily written by Lennon, were all listed as McCartney-Lennon. That was not fair to John, but it wasn't Paul's doing, it was the bigwigs at the label's doing. Then Lennon took a trip to Spain with Brian Epstein to "quid pro quo" a permanent reversal to the credit listing as Lennon-McCartney. This hurt Paul deeply that John would do that to him, but he went along with it as a 20 year old who thought Epstein, who got them their first recording contract, was a brilliant businessman who knew what he was doing. During Wings Over America tour in 1976, Paul reversed the name credit listing to McCartney-Lennon on HIS Beatle songs only, and John didn't complain or have a problem with it. After Lennon's death, Yoko had a problem with it, and sicced her lapdog flunky, Eliot Mintz to create a stink about it to the press, get the fans in an uproar, to sneer at McCartney "trying to steal credit and revise history". She and John was always better at PR than Paul, who took a "beating" by many Beatle fans, and music critics, who thought that he was being arrogant, like "angry" John described after the Beatles break up. But last year, 2017, Yoko herself got history revised and got co-credit for writing John's most iconic post Beatles song 'Imagine' by producing a film with a manipulated John, two days before he was killed, giving her more credit for the song than he gave himself. That said, I hope in the near future, before he dies, Paul gets to witness the McCartney-Lennon name change on Beatles songs that he wrote only, or a majority of, and get history to fairly and accurately recognized his creations, like he and John, as teen boys originally agreed. It's only fair.

The story I'm familiar with is that the 'butcher cover' was a protest against Capitol Records (the American branch of their record label EMI) "butchering" their albums rather than releasing them with the coves and song-orders the Beatles and their producer George Martin intended. Yesterday and Today was cobbled together from tracks taken from the British release of Help!, Rubber Soul, and a couple of stand-alone singles (Capitol having already released their own versions of these albums, minus the tracks they withheld to pad the market with an 'extra' album). After mangling their work in this way, Capitol demanded the Beatles send them cover art for it ... and so they did!
@jrgboy
@jrgboy 5 жыл бұрын
Capitol at the time had been bought out by UK's EMI so it was a British company, but back then lots of things sold in the states had to be Americanized, I remember lots of UK films had their titles changed when released in America, I did read that that EMI threatened Capitol that they would ban the release of Sgt Pepper to the US if they tried to edit it.....
@Colley1973
@Colley1973 5 жыл бұрын
It was a way for Capitol to make more money. Split the original British album in two, there by making money off two Beatle albums vice one. Beatle's Butcher Cover was their response to Capitol's way of doing business.

It never really mattered to me... as just listening to the songs I could tell which one of them really wrote which song. And later in life when I did the research, I was correct every time. Lennon and MCcartney had easily identifiable styles in their songwriting.
@waterfalls5194
@waterfalls5194 5 жыл бұрын
But everybody doesn't know who wrote what, and some would like to know. I hope soon, before he dies, that Paul gets to witness his and John's original handshake agreement as teen friends, that whoever wrote the complete or majority of a song, got the first name credit listed. It's the only fair way for history to accurately record who wrote what. And there is precedent for McCartney/Lennon, since their debut album, 'Please, Please Me', listed McCartney/Lennon for all original Beatles songs.
@Zacomonta
@Zacomonta 5 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, the writing styles of Lennon and McCartney were easily identifiable. Sometimes, however, it wasn't so easy. John said he wrote "Day Tripper," on which Paul has most of the lead vocal. John also wrote "Good Night," which was sung by Ringo and sounds like a Paul song but it's not. Paul claims he wrote "Yellow Submarine" and "With a Little Help from My Friend," yet John and George are more clearly heard in "Yellow Submarine" than Paul, and John is the more prominent backing vocalist on "With a Little Help from My Friends." And both of those songs sound like John songs than Paul songs. But, John said in the Playboy interview just shortly before his death, that except for a few songs, he and Paul actually wrote many of the songs together.

@waterfalls5194
@waterfalls5194 4 жыл бұрын
@@brannon5311 I agree. But that first album is also precedent for making the the change to back to McCartney-Lennon on songs written entirely, or majority by Paul. I think Yoko getting cowriting credit to John's song 'Imagine', also reinforces the fairness of returning to original handshake agreement of John and Paul, before John "quid pro quo'd" it into a permanent Lennon-McCartney with Brian Epstein in Spain.

@Miles Coverdale The new Paul did INDEED want the pre-eminence and control. Lennon gave that to him, and the band survived to make many more hits. However, the new 'Paul' - William Shepherd - and John did not get along like the ORIGINAL Paul and John. Original Paul replaced late '66. The closeness wasn't there. Plus, WIlliam ('Paul') didn't mind being aggressive to the other band members to get what he felt he needed from them musically, to produce the quality records he felt they could. Hence, the old love and friendship that governed the Beatles from the start until late '66 was GONE - after Paul was replaced by WIlliam Shepherd. (John called him FAUL - the Fake pAUL.) THIS is what GRADUALLY tore the Beatles apart. FURTHER, Faul was getting tired of being in the Beatle bubble as well.

The first Beatles album-that's their first UK album, which is now the standard one for both sides of the Atlantic-DID feature McCartney/Lennon credits, rather than Lennon/McCartney. This was long before there was any controversy about it, and yet it's almost never mentioned when the songwriting credits are discussed.

... maybe, but if "Yoko gave Lennon the courage to leave," she's still responsible for the breakup happening
@waterfalls5194
@waterfalls5194 5 жыл бұрын
McCartney was being polite and repeating what John had said, which was what Yoko told John to say: "That she gave him the courage to leave". But the truth was and is: John was not impressed with Yoko, or her art when they first met. He ran from her, but they changed the story later to what is now considered "official narrative". She abandoned her daughter to stalk married father Lennon for 2 years, introduce him (already a drug addict) to heroin to get him hooked on it, so she could take over his life, make him leave his wife and child, and ride his famous coattails to Fast, Easy, Struggle Free FAME for herself, on the same level as Lennon's and The Beatles (same playbook as mind control puppet MDC). The reason John like Allen Klein so much, is because 'MotherYoko", liked what Klein had to say about using The Beatles earnings from their record sales profits (instead of just John's earnings) to finance and showcase her shitty art. Ain't that some nerve? She and John expected the other Beatles to take money away from their households and their families, to provide for and finance Yoko's attempts to gain fame for herself. Narcissistic ego run amuck!

You forgot one thing. In 1975, Howard Cosell, who was friendly with John Lennon, wanted to have The Beatles reunite on his show "Saturday Night with Howard Cosell", but it didn't happen. Lennon was willing to have it happen for him as a favor, but because of all the lawsuits between themselves and with other companies and former managers, it didn't happen. Cosell was willing to pay them $1,000,000 for The Beatles to reunite on his show, but again, it didn't happen. Instead of a Beatles reunion, The Bay City Rollers were featured instead. Cosell said that he did it as a favor to Sid Bernstein, who worked with The Beatles back in the day and that Bernstein was quite the hustler as a promoter, but also, Cosell was dismayed as he felt that The Bay City Rollers didn't really make it. I still remember watching that episode myself. Just thought I'd share this little trivia tidbit with you.

Most people won't remember this, but I was around in '64 when the Beatles first broke out. Several of their records had the Lennon/McCartney credit reversed to McCartney/Lennon, and no one got in a twist about it. At first, Capitol Records didn't want to release Beatles records in America, thinking they couldn't crack the American market. So, EMI released the first few English hits on non-Capitol labels like Vee Jay, and MGM, and Swan, and Decca, and Tollie. After Ed Sullivan, Capitol went back and picked them all up, and the credit order was then secured.

Alright, you got me with one fact I actually didn't know! The singles cover. Some minor inconsistencies in this video: - Yoko wasn't the sole reason for the breakup. Neither was she the main one. But she definitely had a hand in it. She was trying to keep John apart from the others because she felt threatned by the other band members, especially Paul. Her constant presence wasn't helping either and her annoying behavior (Jooooohn! Joooooohn!) and suggestions no one asked for weren't helping either. This, of course, is bagatelized, but if you want to know more there's tons of discussions and amateur studies to be found online on this topic. The main reasons for the breakup: Allan Klein, John's drug abuse, George's thirst for more self expression (justified but he could be a pretty bitter diva), Paul's worcoholism and perfectionism, Apple's business, Brian Epstein's death, John and Paul's estranged relationship (watch understanding Lennon/Mccartney documentary on youtube) and last but not least Yoko's manipulation. Paul defends Yoko because that's how he is. He doesn't want public feuds and they are old and forced to collab on some things so they keep it on the down load. I think they are nice to each other but the love isn't srong lol. They were pretty bitter towards each other until 90's with occasional controversy in 2000's (when Paul wanted to swap the names). - Mark David Chapman's reason to kill John was his thirst for fame.

Maybe 12 years ago, I was telling my friend, Doug, about the Beatles - Yesterday and Today album cover(s) controversy. And being a big Beatles fan for years, he mentioned that he had two copies. Both turned out to be rare stereo versions with the sticker covers, used to cover the 'bloody baby / original covers' intact. After seeing what similar copies in the same condition were selling for on Ebay Doug offered to split the profit with me if I sold them on my Ebay seller account. By the end of the 7 day long auction, both albums were sold for over $700 dollars... each... Thanks, again, Doug! I might have to check and see what today's going price is later on tonight... There was actually a website where folks could send their, more G rated, Y&T Beatles album covers (along with like... $50.00 cash) and have the replacement stickers 'professionally' steamed off to reveal the original, 'bloody babies' cover. Significantly raising it's auction and resale value.

John admitted that he had hit Cynthia several times and deeply regretted it. If you look for interviews with her, you can see she was a beautiful woman inside and out. Never did she slag John or say anything hateful or angry about anyone. She chose her words very carefully. Sadly, John was going downhill emotionally from some very deep losses and he neglected his family. When John divorced Cynthia, Paul stayed close friends with Cynthia and Julian. He would take the time to visit them, and when John had Julian on tour, you can often see Paul playing silly games with Julian and holding his hand. He was very good to them, and John didn't mind. John was very addicted to heavy drugs by then and couldn't handle the responsibility of a family.
