Such an interesting time and character he was. As you mentioned I believe Alfred's travels gave him ideas of what could be and he clearly tried to bring some of those ideas to fruition. The fact that he knew education was important and made it more available shows he was smart enough to take the long view. One of the best examples of the right guy being in the right place, at the right time.
