Dear The Bohemian Traveler, I just wanted to express my gratitude for the invaluable information you provide in your videos. As a recent new hire in the airline industry, I found myself feeling overwhelmed and underprepared for the realities of the job. However, your insights on the differences between "reserve" and "line" schedules, the unpredictability of the work, and the challenges of balancing income and hours have been pivotal in helping me make informed decisions about my future in this field. Your videos have been an indispensable resource for me and I am certain they will be for others who are considering a career in the airline industry. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and insights with us. Btw, I will most-likely decide to resign, two weeks after orientation.

I worked Delta for 8 years. Only way I had a weekend was by swapping shifts with other employees. It was very flexible in that regard. Never once had a morning shift. Seniority is WAY too high in Atlanta. Some days were great, some days were crap. But you are right. The longer you stay, the better it is. Great video!! If I had to go work there I actually would! Only reason I left was because Covid made everything uncertain.

@@TheBohemianTraveler thank you so much. You give me hope. I have a lot of experience in customer service. Haven't worked for a while. I'm ready to start again and I need my confidence back. AA rejected me over a test I took I'm sure the In structor said to not look at notes nothing. Don't look to the sides. I never heard him said open book test. So I did the best a could by memory. I felt so ridiculous when I found out it was an open book test. Then they sent me on a flight with experienced flight attendants and they didn't allow me to help with anything. I was alone at some airport. I just went back to my home base. I was told to go back a year later. But then I had another job. Also I was afraid something similar would happen again. The first time I went to flight attendant training I payed for all my expenses over two thousands. Didn't get my old job too. It's been a long time since I had the painful experience. Affected me terribly. Any way I was wondering if the computer programs have become easier to work with. Believe it or not I trying to get the customer service job. Im going to prove to myself that I can do it. Sometimes things don't go the way we want. I'm just going to keep on trying. How many years did you have to endure the crappy schedules? Were they on you and in what year did you finally get a good hours way you can have more freedom.
@TheBohemianTraveler Жыл бұрын
Well, with my first airline and the current airline, I had my first choice in schedules. Because I was really blessed with doing it through a cattle call and they hire tons of people. And I was not at the bottom of my class. But with AA, I had a crappy schedule the entire time. So it’s just gonna depend upon how many people are hired with you, and where you are placed within your hiring group. Now, if people never retire, and they don’t hire, then you will keep a crappy schedule for a while. But, there’s so much flexibility if you are willing to swap with others.

Thanks for the information. I have thought of the idea of working for an airline as of late. I have had a few interviews for a contracted company and one for an actual airline cross trained position but nothing as of yet. I have an interview for cabin cleaner coming up but it's not for an actual airline but a company that provides the service to my understanding. Do the airlines have their own cabin cleaners or are they usually cross trained? Do the contracted companies usually give raises overtime? Can the experience you get from a contracted company help you get your foot in the door at a major airline? The ones down here near Houston all seem to be on a hiring freeze to my understanding. Thanks again for the great information. The travel time is a bit far for not so good pay, the reviews on places do them no justice so I'm hoping its not a bad experience if I get offered a position.
@TheBohemianTraveler4 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your interview. I think it totally depends. Some companies hire their own to clean the aircraft, but many times they do have contracts with cabin cleaners. We clean the cabins because we are a small station. Well at least we clean the ones that remain overnight. And my station we are cross trained. But this is not normally the case for the larger stations. Since the major airlines are not hiring at the moment, it is nice to get your foot in the door and some experience at the contract companies, if you want to at least see if you like the industry. And if you don’t like it, you don’t have to stay. But I would give it a try if I were you. Good luck and let me know what happens!

Oh my gosh. Thank you so much for this video. I just finished ramp training last week. My flight home arrived at 8:30 pm and I was at work on the ramp at 5am the next morning. I worked two ten hour days immediately after arriving from training 5am until 3pm and on the third day I just couldn't do another day like that. I woke up at 3am and my face was red and puffy and my eyes looked like someone had punched me in the face. I want this to work so bad but already I am feeling like they own me. I was hired part-time but they told me that I am going to have to work full time for a couple of months. I took a leave from my regular job so that I can do this training which means that I am also taking a pay cut during this time. I really hope this is worth it because in addition to being exhausted I am losing a lot of income right now. My station is very small, only about twenty people work there so I will be cross trained in customer service and I can hardly wait for that training. I am a 56 year old woman working with young men and it is not easy trying to keep up with them. It seems like a couple of them don't want me there either. I am struggling right now but I am going to try to make it through.

So basically pretty similar to the military. I thought about working at the airport I mean I was in air cab in the military and that's basically what I dealt with when I was deployed and stuff. But if I were to go to work I would only want a part-time job. I'm considered 100% disabled for PTSD and I really just don't want a full-time job. And I only have one vehicle and if my husband's working I don't want to have to work anywhere every day of the week being at the airport is I believe 24 minutes away. It was a petroleum supply specialist in the military and I was also thinking about doing that for the airport.

Not sure for everyone but it’s about a dollar raise a year and at 5 years a 33% increase and then yearly increases after that. Don’t quote me though. Chin up. You got this. It’s just a stepping stone. I wish you the best.🙏🏾

Sounds a lot like the railroad with seniority and bad hours. I live about 45 minutes from United's EWR hub, at least on a day without much traffic. That's clearly a big hub, so it probably takes a lot longer to get desirable shifts there.
@TheBohemianTraveler5 жыл бұрын
ecoRfan Ewr would be a really good place to work. So many direct flights for you to travel to. I think you’d build up seniority at the big stations more than the small stations. Higher turnover and more positions available and more route growth. Have a great three day weekend!
@dotsyjmaher3 жыл бұрын
SO TRUE.....Low seniority is torture Bids... In order to travel I had to make trades and often work a month straight to get 4 days off to go to SFO
@TheBohemianTraveler3 жыл бұрын
💯!! Dang!! That’s great you make it work though.
@JoeDoe22 жыл бұрын
How do you get by with only doing one day per week? Doing what job? Yearly increases where I worked didn't even amount to $1/hr. More like .50-70 cents. Doesn't even keep up with inflation. Were you unionized? Was it worth the dues? You must be if your pay went up 33% after 5 years. So you started over with pay and seniority with each one of those jobs? How old were you when you did baggage, and how long did you do it? Squatting in the cargo hole on your knees and all of that? I've never seen women do that. Why do 'rampers' interact with flight attendants? Taking food on and off? Not much time for a conversation there. When would you meet people from all over the world on the ramp? You must be talking about gate agent or ticket agent.

@TheBohemianTraveler Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure about a contract. If it’s a year contract, do they make you stay the entire time? Because generally, after six months, you’re free to leave. But congratulations on your job. I know that if you go on the company website (the internal one), there’s a section about employment opportunities. And then you put your application in there. Good luck

Michael Robinson , Ready Reserve is equivalent to being part time without the benefits (healthcare). You’d still get the flight perks and other little nicknacks, but that the big difference. You’d still have a schedule and you bid with all the RR’s.

nicole chatman congratulations! I’ve seen it done. The people I’ve worked with worked 5 days a week and were able to complete training. They took vacation times and pto From their main job. I was lucky because I worked at a hospital so I generally worked two 12 hour shifts. So all my shifts that were during the week, I traded with my coworkers at the hospital to work weekends. And then I went to training Monday through Friday. Are they going to fly you out to training? I hope it works out for you.

broncoxc322 I’m not sure if you are cross utilized which means you do both, or simply customer service agent. Being a single mom where I really need to know my schedule in advance. When applying for a part- time position how would it work. Do you know your schedule in advance? At least after training. If the position is part-time will I know how many days I will be working for the next month or so or the the week? How does it work. I really want to work for an airline but with the salary as a single mom I cannot afford to get less then what I’m making now. If I could get an idea it would be great or should I give up my dream of working for an airline since I am a a single mom in my mid 40’s.😜
@TheBohemianTraveler5 жыл бұрын
Nat. lab. Never give up on your dream girl.❤️ yes, we definitely know our schedule in advance. So right now my schedule will be the same for 3 months. I can trade my schedule, drop days, and pick up additional days if I elect to. But that’s only if I want to. I understand the financial thing though. If you have additional income coming in outside of the airline job, it’s feasible.
