It's not weird at all that you're sad about being back. That has nothing to do with being ungrateful. Yes, you've had an amazing experience and you've enjoyed it, but that doesn't mean that you're not allowed to miss it. You've lived a 'different' life for almost four months, people can't expect you to just forget about that and carry on with the life you left for that amount of time. Thank you for this video Nena! I'll probably be on the Fall'21 voyage and I'm over excited, video's like this make me want to go even more. Thanks for being real with us and showing us the hard site as well! xx

Nice follow up just after a year later. I am actually considering teaching on the ship for a semester when I retire. Why? Because this is a college experience that I never had. I had to work while I was in school, but I am grateful for a successful career. I am jealous of your experience and how the 4 months allowed you to experience something wonderful. What you need to do now is carry it on and learn what you found out about yourself and others. Use the experience to move forward and life will only get better, but never forget the memory. How could you,? You did a Vlog. All I have are photos of my own experiences, but those photos are no different than the Vlog. Bungee jumping.... Wow, glad you lived through that and that's one of many experiences during the 4 months that made the semester memorable. Stay well, life is short enjoy it... You are doing fine and hope doing this vlog helped you and others, like myself, chiming in on your experience. Imagine the Spring 2020 SAS class? They were in a middle of a global pandemic and we're just slowing getting out of it now... We hope and pray...stay well and safe...

I’ve literally watched all of your semester at sea videos! You are so inspiring by being so real, so honest, so open! God is working miracles in your life, and He has bigger plans for you! The SAS was step one, step two is beginning! ❤️

Thank you for your honesty :) I am graduating in May and there are a lot of big changes coming in my life. In the fall I will be starting my master's degree for which I am both very nervous and excited for. I really appreciated your perspective on 'reentry'. Great things are coming!

I can totally understand your feelings. After Highschool I have been to New Zealand for 6 months by myself and it was sonder the best experience of my life even though I really enjoy college. Everything felt so wrong, when I came home. The bad thing was that all of my Highschool friends haven‘t really been interested in what I have done and we just haven‘t as much in common anymore. So now I‘m not friends with them anymore, but I have new friends in college that I enjoy being around and that I know will be there for me even after college. You will always remember this amazing time!

I think what you experienced was an intensive experience. There are many intensive experiences you can find. My intensive Masters Nursing was so intensive and all-consuming, plus life-changing, and when it ended I think I felt as you have done after Semester at Sea. However, I have done two month residential intensives in swing dance in Sweden which were a blast. I did a three month intensive learning French in Tahiti. I’ve done intensives in Spanish in Mexico and Costa Rica. Life offers you intensives if you want them - and almost all are a whole bunch cheaper than Semester at Sea! You’ll feel exhilarated while doing them, meet lots of people, have those strange experiences and find things you didn’t know to look for, and then you’ll go through the return-to-reality phase. No one understands this unless they too have done something equivalent. Clearly, you enjoy the intensive experience, and how it lets you bond with others, learn deeper info about what you’re interested in than you’d otherwise get, and find so many little connections you never expected. I say, take the sadness, and figure out how to use it self-reflectively, as this video shows you have. Then find another intensive. It won’t be the same. The residential experience was part of what made your SAS so intense, plus the isolation from others for the 2 1/2 months plus the shared decisions, shared meals, shared activities, shared expectations, shared goals, and shared feeling that life is ahead of you. I’m sure the SAS showed you a version of yourself that you liked, and a life you loved. You can have that! Figure out how! Not easy. But it’s there. Thanks for sharing your feelings, which I related too - although no two people can ever fully understand another’s feelings. My relatives & friends had no clue what to ask either. How could they have done? I can’t wait for my next intensive, whatever it is, and I’m now 56! Antique!

I enjoyed your comments as an over 65 year old who has so far loved the intensives since my retirement from everyday office life. I’ve worked summer seasonal work in national parks and loved it. That’s exactly what each of the experiences have been. Now I am planning for the Fall 2021 trip as a lifelong learner. I also experienced some wonderful learning and work “intensives” over my lifetime and am feeling grateful for life’s opportunities.

This video taught me what I need to ask to people who've had big experiences and are returning from them. I had a cousin who went to England for 6 months a few years ago and another cousin who is working in Maui and plans to stay for 2-3 years

Ozan Kement that’s 10 months away. How are you to say it will still be a thing? And IF it is, I’d probably be dead or sick sooo I’m not implying that the coronavirus isn’t something that we shouldn’t take caution and pay no mind to, I’m saying that in my PERSONAL OPINION, this will likely go away by the end of April.

so exciting!! i did have a fuel surcharge, but it varies depending on how many people are on your voyage. as far as the classes go, it changes every semester but usually has a range of general education courses, business courses and lots of humanities courses. if you want, you can check out the class list on their website because it's usually similar every voyage :) hope this helps!

Do you think there is a difference if you were to go in the spring instead of the fall since you have the summer to decompress and you’re not returning to second semester and a short break?

seasickness is almost the only excuse for missing class haha. if you are really sick, you are allowed to miss class and go to the health center. but usually you are only allowed to miss like twice

@calerestial4640

Zubin Luthra probably... It’s common that voyagers go as lifelong learners with a whole group of people that they were when they did it the first time. So basically they just make it a big reunion out of it

would you suggest going on semester at sea second semester senior year? I want to go on it senior year, but I'm not sure what semester. I don't want to come back and still have one semester to go, but I also don't want to come back and have no where to go. What would you suggest? If there were any seniors that you knew of, how did their reentry go? thank you so much, I love your videos!!
@NenaShelby
@NenaShelby 4 жыл бұрын
i knew a few people that did SAS for their last semester as kind of a finale to their college career but there were also a few who went back for one more semester. i can see how that would be difficult to re-enter but it’s quite possible that it’s good closure for your time in college to have more of a finish with your college. reentry is hard regardless but it just depends on the person :) thanks for watching!

Love your channel! Been watching it from the start it made me so excited for Semester at Sea, before I went on it this past Fall'19. I started up my own youtube to recap my experience as well. Would love if you and anyone else would give it a look and leave me some recommendations to grow it. :)
