When I became disabled and lost my job food stamps or vision pretty much kept food in the fridge. Without FS I would've starved waiting for SSDI to approve my disability benefits. But once I got my SSDI they cut the FS down to a minimum amount. Which I soon stopped using due to being more of a hassle for a few dollars to spend on food each month. Never purchased any gormet foods or Hugh dollar stuff. Just got what I needed to survive. FS are good in the right circumstances but too many people abuse the system leaving people that really could use it going without.

The American system is confusing. If you're on "welfare" you need to be actively searching for a job, and will be cut off if you aren't trying. I don't know how they measure how much you get, but you need to put in a certain amount of hours at your last job to be eligible, you can't be at a new job every fee months. Employment insurance is taken from your pay, so you essentially use your "own" money. If you have a disability, you're on disability and get a somewhat decent living income (arguable). All of these people, plus people with lower incomes - are eligible for food banks. You go, give your bank statements and they give you points. You get A LOT of food usually. Mostly canned goods, but they provide fruit and veggies too. You can go monthly where me and my grandma go. I have student loans so I'm ineligible for unemployment when I'm not working in the winter (most of the staff where I work have seasonal jobs due to the nature of it. Older employees who don't want to look for jobs every winter, will apply for unemployment) so it helps a lot. Live with my grandma who gets a bare minimum from the government.

The Old Khajiit Finally, a good rational response from someone who has actually been on Food Stamps. The people who have been dealt a raw deal in life whether it be Financially or Health wise and in that extreme state, which may be short term or long term a person needs an extent amount of help to basically not end up homeless, starving, sick or even dead. I’m so happy that you got the help you needed to gain financial security from your SSDI. You are absolutely right about others who abuse that system too and it’s a lot of this younger generation abusing it I noticed. Don’t get me wrong, their are quite a few adults I’ve seen take advantage of Food Stamps as well here in Florida. But, I’m very happy to hear when the ones who really need it get that care that America has given us. I’m 28 now, but I remember struggling to hold a place down back when I was 22 to 24 and it was just me & my ex-girlfriend. I had just lost my job, she had just quit her job. I regretfully had to borrow money from my Parents, but couldn’t ask for money from her family because they were VERY poor and I mean POOR. Anyways, while in between looking for jobs for awhile we began to hit rock bottom, especially since my ex had quite a few health problems that her medical could not take care of either. Then came the Depression, then the heavy drinking, then the Drug abusing and that’s both of us. Being poor & trying to support a Drug habit for 2 is no easy task, thankfully we didn’t become full blown addicts and I was VERY thankful that my ex wasn’t Pregnant nor did she or myself want children. But, I then decided to file for Food Stamps and I gotta say they still make it a little too easy to dupe the system by lying on your application that you’re “homeless” when in fact you’re room mates with each other or living at Parents house. After her getting a job and things running a little smoother, even though we weren’t doing great financially nor were we Dirt Dead Poor either. I couldn’t help but feel undeserving of my EBT (Stamps), after I had always complained about these Meth Head Hicks buying candy & junk food I realized the once necessary nutritional food I was buying with EBT slowly began to turn into Junk food, just like what I had complained about making me then a hypocrite. That’s right when I realized it was time for me to lose the Food Stamps and choose a career or school. I would only go back to Food Stamps as a last only option or if I had to have been stuck in the situation you yourself described. Food Stamps should be treated as temporary rather than a permanent lifestyle, treated with Respect like most things in Life. Anyway long story short lol, I’ve now been happily single (but, prowling), My Ex-GF is now happily married & we keep in touch, I’m grasping this mental Depression best I can (mostly without Drug Abuse), I’m with my whole Family and I’m pursuing my career as a History Professor. Glad though you are doing well Friend and keep on keepin on. Hopefully the Conservative/Republicans don’t cut TOO much from Food Stamps & hopefully Democrats/Liberals don’t make Food Stamps universally available to those who are just Lazy & Effortless. Have a nice day!

Your wrong. The reason people buy unhealthy food is because they don’t know how to prepare the healthy options in a tasty way or don’t want to put in the effort. Water is the cheapest thing you can drink. Here in the US it’s generally safe to drink from the tap which means you turn your water into things like tea which is also very cheap to make. Take 4 tea bags and you can make one whole gallon of the stuff for about 30 cents. Produce regularly goes on sale when it’s getting old and depending on where you live in the USA or the season the cost can be cheaper then a processed item.

What people think about food stamps, in my experience, is largely dependant on whether or not they've ever had to use them. If someone has never needed them, they tend to see them as a waste and pretend that people on food stamps are somehow always eatting caviar and buying gym memberships with them, neither of which is true. If, however, someone has ever actually HAD foodstamps, they realize that, unsuprisingly, they can only be used for food and are an ABSOLUTELY VITAL government benefit that keeps people from starving and resorting to despirate measures a la the end of The Grapes of Wrath. I think it boils down to whether or not you care at ALL about your fellow Americans or not. (PS: Food stamps do NOT keep people poor. They keep people fed and alive, though they'll remain poor so long as they lack access to meaningful income, a situation that may not be solveable for at least some households. That's simply the harsh reality, and, unless we're ready to euthanize the poor, which I hope we never are, feeding those who cannot feed themselves is called basic human compassion.)
@lilaclizard45046 жыл бұрын
You'll also find those watching from outside America tend to have that compassion for Americans & think that enough food to live should be a basic human right for all & any country that can't provide that really shouldn't be trying to convince itself of the world that it is a first world country & the amount of money those on food stamps are getting is hardly enough for survival anyway! Our corporate tax is 20% and we spend less taxpayer money per capita to healthcare than US, even though it's free for those who can't afford it and ridiculously cheap for even the richest. But I'm not bragging here, I just say how things are. We Nordics are as rich or even richer than USA while comparing GDP per capita. Again, not bragging, just pointing out that Nordic model is not bad for economy. Oh, and those minimum benefits for people costs us less than 2% of government budget.
@atklm16 жыл бұрын
the musical gamer Well it tells roughly the living standards. Like Nigeria has bigger GDP than Norway, but per capita Norway stomps without contest and people there are ridiculously more wealthy than in Nigeria. And we can use pretty much any meaningful international rankings from happiness to freedom of press to governance, corruption etc. and USA loses to pretty much in every one of them to all five Nordic countries, so I guess it's more accurate to say that comparing USA to any western country is unfair to USA. Let's just say that here in Nordics, there are no homeless people lying everywhere on the streets and no people living in some god-forsaken trailer homes like animals and you can really see without any GDP measurement the difference, if you visit here.

I'm not contesting what you are saying, but the reason our government spends so little on science is because the capitalist incentive focus on private industry. If science spending were all government then agenda driven politics can derail useful science(Think Bill Clinton halting completion of the super-collider after billions spent when it was 90% completed.), and promote junk science(Dialect studies that concluded the way to make students learn better in school was to teach them Ebonics.). We don't need government funding for science because private industry invests the "lion's share" of the dollars. The United States puts more rockets in space and develops more new medications than any other country with miniscule government funding. With capitalism, there is an incentive to get rich and famous by inventing something new and useful, and such ideas are welcome in the developmental teams of research corporations who can mass produce these products for wide consumption by the public without a politician trying to halt funding.

Haha $125.51 a month. You're joking right, you have to be. It's often much less than that. Did you know that someone on social security / disability receiving $600 a month only qualifies for a total of $47. Yeah chew that over
@LushiaKyobi3 жыл бұрын
Probably depends on each case, whether the person on SSI is working, what state they live in, etc. I receive a bit more than that in SSI and I'm getting $145 in food stamps, likely because I'm not making any income on my own (and unable to) For a while at first I was only getting $15, but that was due to a government error. I also had to research what I needed to include in the paperwork to get a decent amount, for instance, including my recurring medical bills helped to increase the amount.
@realist2793 жыл бұрын
this can be true. it depends if you have other bills they consider to be basic needs like rent and utilities. you'll get more than 47 if you pay those kinds of bills. if you don't have other basic need bills yeah you'll get almost nothing.

It is done. But those who receive it shouldn't. I remember my mom was propositioned in a store parking lot to buy food stamps for money. She told the guy that it was illegal, and it is likely so people can buy drugs, alcohol, or other things with the cash.
@UmmYeahOk6 жыл бұрын
I don't know when the law was made, but in 2001-2002, I worked at an Albertsons grocery store. We got a lot of food stamp recipients buying cigarettes and alcohol all the time. I bothered me because, 1) there were cheaper places nearby where they could buy food, getting more with their food stamps, and 2) being a tax payer and witnessing my taxes being used this way. I remember one time witnessing a customer, who went over budget, and would have to pay the rest, have me void off several food items, rather than the expensive alcohol. In 2003, I worked at Super Target in the same town, on the same road, closer to lower income households, yet I rarely saw anyone pay with food stamps. We didn't sell cigarettes, but we did sell alcohol. When alcohol was scanned, the computer automatically marked it as having to be paid for with additional tender. You couldn't buy it with food stamps. The customers never seemed surprised by this. They just assumed they would have to anyway. Maybe the reason so many were driving further to shop at a more expensive store were doing so because they KNEW the system was broken. At Walmart, across the street from Target, I once witnessed a woman ask her husband if they should buy an xbox live card. The husband told her no, because it wasn't covered by food stamps. I know a ton of people honestly need assistance, including these people, but man, I saw WAY TOO MUCH abuse of it.

Many people criticize food stamps but as someone who was raised my a mother that's how we surviver after my mother lost her job with the state of Maryland. The food stamps didn't just help me eat at home but at school too. It also qualified me to take my SAT'S, get a free coat and gloves when we didn't have any money, and noticed us on churches that donate turkeys for Christmas. It was a blessing and it is why I was able to go to college and understand hard work. And everyone saying that people with food stamps have it easy that's not true. My mom shopped at the dollar store to feed us and other people she knew that couldn't get help. And I had nicer clothing because I had to work at any job that would take me so I could have a phone and not get made fun of at school cuz my clothes had holes in then and didn't fit. Most of my stuff still came from the clearance at the thrift stores which is still expensive for me the pay for in middle school.

Savva Moser you don't understand that its quantity over quality for poor people. Soft drinks are cheap if that helps them get back on their feet and have something to drink and keeps their bellies full instead of wasting money buying the "healthier" option (most fruit juices are worse for you than some sodas) if they waste money on that then they have less money to actually feed themselves and get nutrients. I work at a grocery store, food stamps are a joke. Most(not all) people will buy mountains on top of mountains of prepaid food, hotpcokets, frozen pizza and "cold items". Have in mind stores can turn "hot items" that you cant use food stamps on into 'cold items' simply by cooling them off, effectively manipulating food stamps. I have no problem seeing people get food they need, if they need it, but when i see 2 obese people who clearly dont take care of themselves buy a cart full of pop and pizza on food stamps; it sucks to know your hard worked for money is going towards not saving someone who needs it, but someone who is too lazy to do something with there lifes. I would much prefer having a system that allows you to buy raw products like flour, unmade chicken, milk, ect. Having the people make it saving alot of money and having them become more knowledgeable on what they do. Once you come to respect your food you make, youll start respecting the little things in life.

I work at a retail pharmacy that accepts food stamps. This happened a few weeks ago but I see similar events at least once a week. A guy came up to the register with $40 worth of food. Chips, frozen pizza, frozen burritos, soda, milk and candy just to name a few. Somewhere he said something about 7 mouths to feed. When his EBT card declined, he pulled out a $20 bill and decided to get beer and cigarettes. That's what pisses me off about some people on food stamps. That case is not unique I see one about once a week. Yes the food was not healthy but at least the kids wouldn't have starved. $20 is less than $40 but some food is better than no food.

I never have been on food stamps however I tried to see if I qualified one time in my life where money was extremely tight. Even then I didn't qualify but survived on Ramen Noodles. I work hard and make a very good living now. I agree there should be a safety net for times that are tough, but it shouldn't become a lifestyle.
I hate the this garbage food exists in the world. Except for chicken.

it needs more restrictions that are actually enforced must be a citizen, must pass a drug test, must provide proof on a regular basis that you are attempting to get a job and maybe add a time limit for how long they can be on them
@bassicallyandre6 жыл бұрын
Definitely drug testing. I've seen many people sell their food stamps for drugs.
@bibubbletea6 жыл бұрын
I think the drug test is reasonable but the majority of people on food stamps are only on them for about 6 months so

@Chrisexe6 жыл бұрын
These restrictions are actually real things. If you are unemployed to receive benefits you have to go to this 'Work First' thing where they help you make a resume and apply for jobs. Also, there is a strange cut off once you make a certain amount eatch month leaving you w/o snap and still hardly enough money to buy food and pay rent. This cut off often keeps people in low paying jobs so they can afford their rent each month and still feed themselves.

The problem with food stamps is that lots of them go to either financially struggling families, or it goes to the scum of society (some call them “thugs”, “methheads”, “bums”, or “useless people”). Bottom line is that they do help the poor, but they also help the shady people too, and discriminates against people whose jobs are tied to the state. People like my father can never receive a single food stamp or a single cent from social security, regardless of how bad things ever get, but the drugheads that he deals with and looks over will.
@GFlCh6 жыл бұрын
Why will your dad never be eligible to collect social security benefits?
@aaronlandry39346 жыл бұрын
Kevin Fegan He is forever ineligible to gain food stamps, free healthcare, free cellphones (I don’t see why the government even gives those out), or social security benefits, because he has worked for the state. If he had been employed at anything else instead, he’d be eligible, but can never qualify for them, because he’s a former employee of the state.
@tolfan44386 жыл бұрын
Aaron Landry I don't believe that you're right about that what state does your dad work for state employees are entitled to Social Security benefits it gets taken out of their check just like anyone else and food stamps are based on income if your dad's not eligible for food stamps is because of his income not because he works for the state how old are you by the way

it is a worthwhile handout if they don't whaste our tax dollars on soda and junkfood, we should ban those so they will be more careful with our tax dollars
@QuackersMcCrackers6 жыл бұрын
Actually, the food listed in this video are those that provide the most caleries. Thus, if such items were banned, people would need to use more food stamps to get the same amount of calories, having the opposite effect you intend.

All our tax dollars will eventually be wasted. Military, corn/soy subsidies, and earmarks all are examples of wasted money. It is the nature of money to be wasted.

@Tigerkem6 жыл бұрын
While I agree food stamps should cover healthier food, unfortunately unhealthy snacks are generally cheaper and have a much longer shelf life so that's probably while it remains. Fresh fruit and vegetables can be costly and can last a few days up to about 2 weeks. Whereas chips and drinks can last you months to a year.
@emmabila34806 жыл бұрын
good point but at least no soda

Food Stamps should only be allowed to be used for fresh fruits, vegetables, water, spices, meats, dairy, and juice. No soda, chips, sweets, or frozen foods should be allowed.

I don't have exact figures, but coming from a large family with several dozen cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. that are on SNAP, I can tell you with certainty that 3 of the top items bought with foodstamps are Cigarettes, Drugs (not marijuana), and Gasoline. I know you can't buy those items directly with EBT, but foodstamps are traded for cash at a rate of $2 in foodstamps for $1 in cash. So a $5 pack of cigarettes costs $10 in foodstamps. Drug dealers usually don't give cash for foodstamps, they just give you $50 worth of drugs for $100 in foodstamps. Happens much more often than people think.
