@@BarbaraRattee for me it varies every time. I plan for it to be hot and/or cold. I dress in layers so I can take off a top shirt if it's warm and I have an extra shirt or a light jacket, depending on where I'm headed, that I can put on if it's chilly. Some times I need both in the same flight if it's a long one. I haven't done the Asia trips like Alex but 9 or 13 hrs to and from Europe is plenty of time for them to make sure you're miserable on a flight :)

Great tips. I also pack a small disposable LED flashlight for when the cabin is dark but you need to find something in your bag or if you drop something on the floor and have to search. I drop everything. It's less intrusive on your neighbors, and overhead lights don't always illuminate where light is needed. Game changer! Also, I bring sleepwear and slippers; even if the airline provides, they're never quite as comfy as your own, or if they don't provide, you're prepared. Next, I always pack tummy relief plus flushable antibiotic wipes that serve both for sanitizing surfaces and personal hygiene care. Remember to bring enough essentials for the return trip as you may not be able to replenish supplies while abroad. One last tip: I pack groups of things that logically go together in zip lock bags. For instance, my sleepwear all goes together in a single bag that I then remove the air, and it compacts the items. Then when I need my sleepwear attire, I just pull out the single bag easily knowing it's all together without having to rummage. I do this with my checked baggage too. It keeps your clothing from wrinkling, lets you pack more, and is especially convenient on multi-leg journeys with stopovers. It takes little longer to pack this way than normal, so it's definitely worth the extra time.

This is the BEST list I've seen yet. I travel with nearly everything listed here in an accessible bag, even a change of clothes (a shirt at minimum). I was once on a shorter 2-hr flight and had the person next to me accidentally spill tomato juice on my pants and shirt. I was miserable the rest of the flight because I could not get to clothes in my bag stored in the overhead. My additions to your list would be: anti-puffing eye balm for long flights (I use the Boscia brand) menthol cough drops (helps for dry throats as well as coughs) noise-cancelling headphones (if I have the space)

If the flight allows a personal item and a carry on, it's better to have a roller luggage that fits in the overhead bin AND a bag for underneath the seat for things you need easy access to. The person item can go on top of the roller luggage in the airport so you don't have to strain your neck, shoulders and back carrying that. It's always smart to pack a few outfits in your carry on in case your luggage gets lost. I fly back and forth between San Francisco and India, which is first a 15 hour flight with at least a couple hour layover and then another 4 hour flight. My luggage has gotten lost before (it was found, but took a week to get to me), so its a must to pack emergency outfits. I would also add compression socks if you have problem with circulation and let cramps.

I have a single backpack for my carry on for my flights to Asia. My connecting flight is usually in a different terminal so I have to cover a great distance in the airport. Plus I have to go through a security check when going from an arrival gate to a departure gate. So the less bags I have the better. It carries extra clothes, electronics, medicine and other things I can't afford to lose. I carry my passport, travel docs and trip money in a neck pouch. The passport only comes out of the pouch when it is requested and immediately goes back in the pouch when it is returned. That way it is always with me and it is easy to verify whether or not I have it with me. The backpack is stored in the overhead bin, it's usually too full to store under the seat, and I don't want to give up that legroom if it does fit. I wear cargo pants and a fleece (scottevest) jacket with lots of pockets. So anything I might need during the flight is on my person. This includes noise cancelling headphones, pen, gum, foam earplugs, iPod, wired earbuds (in addition to the headphones), and phones so I can turn them on after we land as we approach the gate.

I think, unless you have to go right into a business presentation or somewhere you have to look good the moment you get there, just take the make up off before the flight and don't worry about putting any back on. One of the things I do as soon as I get to the airport, before even getting a boarding pass or anything - take any outer layers you'll have to remove at security and stuff it in your carry on. Keys, watches etc, too. When you get to security you have your carry on to put on the belt. You're not stripping in the line and when you're through, you can take your carry on to another area to start getting dressed again. Then, at the most you're carrying your carry-on and possibly shoes. SHOES! Take slip ons, even maybe half size bigger. Easy on easy off. I have 'flight clothes' and they're all about 1/2 size bigger. No tight clothes to fly in.

Never use a rolling suitcase as your carry-on unless you want to be forced to check it at some point! I've been on several "full" flights where they asked for volunteers to check rolling bags then didn't get volunteers so they randomly forced some people to do so! That will never happen if you use a backpack! I use a combination of a backpack and a smaller soft-sided tote that fits under the seat with my essentials. The flight attendant told me by using a backpack I would NEVER be forced to check it if the flight is full.

Fantastic ideas, presented concisely & quickly!!! I I don't fly long distances anymore but I enjoyed seeing what YOU bring in your carry-on. You reaffirmed that the items I used to pack are useful & necessary. Everyone used to chide me about being so prepared, until they needed something & came to me for help. Two additional ideas: something for gas, diaharrea and/or bad indigestion in addition to the ginger. (I have gastro problems occasionally). Second idea; packaged snacks, whatever you like. I traveled long distances many times w/my son, from ages 2 to 21. If a meal was delayed or not enough for him, I had snack items to pull out for him. (& me sometimes!) Ideas: peanut butter-cracker packs, nuts, dried fruits, etc. Not the most nutritious, I admit, but better than candy bars....or dealing w/low sugar jitters! My son laughed at my "snack bag" until he needed food on an overseas flight, when the flight was delayed & we had to stay on the plane! A hungry teen is not pleasant to travel with, for sure!! One more thing:: a few sheets of paper towels. Can be used as a "placemat" or to help mop up spills, etc. It's easier these days to buy little packets of many medical & personal items. Browse your dollar store for these. I used to carry small bottles of many meds, which made my carry-on heavy. Now there are options with those little packs of everything! Safe travels and good health to you!🙂

Mini charger with plug to match your destination. iPad + kindle (longer battery life) medication. Since it isn't washable, I bring two zippered pillow cases. They take up almost no room and you can rest assured that you are sleeping on a clean pillow. For short flights, I will bring a neck support instead of a pillow because it takes up very little room. I use one called TRVL. It has a flexible plastic support inside of a fabric wrap. You wrap it around your neck and attach it to the end with a sewn - on velcro piece. You really have to see it but it works very well for me! It allows your head to remain upright and prevents it from bobbing around while you sleep!

But I would like to add: extra PENS for custom papers save you from waiting in lines. Snacks save us when our flight delayed and canceled, airport food is so expensive. And have a paper copy of itinerary because some resorts have sucky internet connections we got out room first because I have it. Some relied on their phone but unluckily they can't open their emails. Great list. Everyone calls me paranoid when I pack a change of clothes for emergencies in my personal item. I also keep my tiny camera, an emergency kit with pads in it, a sanitiser kit with a mask, wipes and sanitiser and vaccination certificate, my Umbrella, breath freshness, throat lozenges, reading material, bandaids and nail file, credit cards and money (both dollars and currency of the country where I am landing), compression socks Some snacks, teabags and whitener A travel video maker suggested we should put on a Hydrating tissue mask during the flight, but I would not feel comfortable doing that with so many people around me.

I always wear a button-down shirt with a pocket where I keep my passport with my boarding pass slipped inside of it. I also have a pen and a piece of gum to help ear popping on takeoff. On a 15+ hr flight I also have my first prescription pill to take instead of getting up and going to the bin for my backpack to retrieve it.

Be sure and keep your meds in their own containers. Do not mix in one container (I tried to do this once, I was questioned). You can ask your pharmacist for smaller containers to take with you on flights.

The change of clothes and toiletries also come in handy if something happens to your checked bag - having those in my backpack saved my butt more than once, and I always make sure those are in my backpack if I'm checking a bag. Also, I highly suggest getting an RFID blocking sleeve (or pouch, or something) for your passport (and cards, if you want to).

Have the information of your hotel with you. When you go through customs they want the address and name of your hotel. You should also bring a travel adapter to charge your electronics. If you get cold easily you will need an extra sweater and the blanket on the plane.

Dont know if you can get all of that, or even want to, through security especially if you have to do it twice in one flight. Yes this happens in Qatar. Initally and then at the gate. We had a 15 hr flight from Qatar to Miami and the girl next to us , slept most of the trip. Woke up to eat two meals and one snack meal and then went to the washroom and back to the seat to sleep. That was it. Nothing else and a lot of the other people tried this. So sack out and have nice dreams and then you are at your destination. Wish I could have done that. Probably the most important thing is your seat location if you are in economy. Always the first row or exit rows. The extra legroom is a god send. Two across if possible is a must . Of course Premium Economy is a dream (think Business class light). I highly recommend this. It was 43 hours non stop travel getting back to Miami from Cape Town. 43 hours. Lounge access is a must and of course seat location in the first row of each economy section or exit rows and two across. Good luck. Im 74 and survived this.

I thought I was the only one who did not like the rolling type suitcase. I use a cross body personal bag with zipper on top for easy access. I use large square cornered backpack for carryon which has more space than some others. (This one also has side handle like suitcase). Carrying fabric items save on weight.

When talking about your carry-on, you seemed to forget that for all (as far as I know) international flights, you are allowed both a carry-on bag AND a personal items bag, either a purse, camera, or computer bag that goes under the seat in front of you. Everything you mentioned can go in this bag except a change of clothes. Mine is a small backpack with my carry-on 20" roller bag actually carrying my laptop and camera, as well as a change of clothes or two. I carry the second, small bag with my two 8" Amazon Kindles, which let me download many books and movies or TV Show episodes from Amazon Prime Video for those of us who don't use Apple Products. My small backpack is far lighter since I don't carry a change of clothes and only carry a 24-hour supply of my medicines in it, instead of the 18 to 20 bottles of prescription medications I have in my carry-on. All told, my backpack has three or four pounds of things I need while in my airplane seat, while my roller case carries all the items I need for both the airplane portion (ten to 12 kilograms (22 to 26.4 pounds) depending upon the carrier) and the airport layover portion (depending on the length of the layover). Not all of us fly on the company's dime, so we are relegated to something that does not come close to business class (if your company forces you to fly economy for a 12-hour plus flight, I would get a new contract or a new company).
@AlexgoesCoconuts8 ай бұрын
Yes but nowadays most airlines ask most travelers to check their rolling suitcase at the gate because of limited overhead baggage storage so if you are stuck doing that you won’t have what you need. Just a thought
