I've heard way too many people say "I'm not good enough to go to tournaments." If you're interested in playing competitively, go to a tournament! You'll learn a ton.

Poison- Getting bodied is the best way to learn IMO
@PoisonXLZ9 жыл бұрын
As long as they're telling you how to improve, hell yeah.
@Tachyon8369 жыл бұрын
Poison- Definitely, nothing helps you more than seeing what other players have that you still need to work on. My first tournament, as a Zelda main made me see why she was low-tier. And within that same day, I picked up Falco and he stayed with me ever since. About 2 years I've been a falco main. At that tournament, I saw so much. People were confused at my Falco, it was so nooby...I didn't have any laser game, and the only real tech I did was wavedash. I couldn't even short hop aerial.....let alone the L cancel. The tourney definitely motivated me though and I've adopted a much higher level of play. Not only can I do lasers and SHFFL and SHFF Aerials.......I can waveshine, multishine, shine grab, laser grab, laser jab, ledge laser, ledge drop shine bair, double shine, and platform drop aerials. I'm currently just now getting the grasp of moonwalking with Falco, but techskill only gets me so far. This is where tourneys really help, you need reads, you need to be ready for mindgames. You can't practice that against a CPU that doesn't think. That is currently my weakness a a player, and you can only learn that playing people who are just as good or better than you. Edit: m2k also just happened at my first tourney which was Kings of the North 3, KoTN3. We played a friendly with him, and he 4 stocked me and my bud. At least we weren't JV 5'd!
@mahkramsaile47329 жыл бұрын
+Poison- They shouldn't attend if they don't have the basic knowledge of advanced tech and stuff though. If they go to tourneys and get wrecked without even knowing what the opponent is doing to them then it will do no good for their improvement. If they have the knowledge on the game and they read up on it, then they can start to improve through tournaments. Having the knowledge and applying it are two different things. Get the knowledge on your own through research, tournament play will help you to apply it.
@4137Swords9 жыл бұрын
+Bennie “Bee836” C You worded it perfectly. The struggles of upcoming competitive smashers: Not having a way to train and learn!!! Because playing against CPUs is nothing like against players and it sucks when you have no one else to train with.

even though im a mortal kombat tourney player i can definitely say that these are extremely helpful tips that anyone looking to join ANY tournament scene for ANY game should follow (although i got confused from you guys saying "friendlies" but then i realized that is your equivalent to what MK players call "casuals") everyone is always willing to help you out and play matches and just there to have fun, hell if you are just learning a fighting game, literally the BEST thing you can do is go to a tournament ASAP it is the best way of improving and you will have a lot of fun doing it. also one more thing, for your first tournament, it should be a learning experience and for fun, yes play to win but do not expect to win right off the bat, just get as far as you can, even if it is 0-2 dont get discouraged, find out how you can improve and come back next week, you will notice from week to week you WILL get better

first time i went to a tournament was really cool, i could barley wavedash but its awesome to have players which you can ask, hey how does this or that work, or if they tell you things on the fly while you play against them. after those 2 days i improved my gameplay by more than 200% because you get instant feedback how things work or what you are doing wrong

Bringing your own setup, plugging in and out your controller, seeing smash players that never shower. These things make going to tournaments so much better than playing online. Wii's are generally acceptable (at least where I am), since there isn't a difference (other than the crisper video quality of the Wii) between the two. It's also easy to emulate SSBM on a Wii so you don't have to buy a copy of melee, which are quite expensive at the moment.

How do I make a gamertag? Will I make one at the registration desk if this is my first tournament? Please reply to this comment thank you.

+Brian Duong (BDCube) Yeah just tell them your tag when you sign up. It's recommended that you stick with the same one for multiple tournaments for ease of recognition and other factors

+SSBM Tutorials So if this is my first time what will they ask me at the registration desk. Do I just tell them the gamertag I want to appear?
