Today we’re going to talk about lactation insufficiency. Let’s say you just started breastfeeding, and there’s not enough milk. What could you do in this situation?
Natural remedies for lactation insufficiency:
1. Fenugreek
2. Blessed thistle
3. Alfalfa
4. Brewers yeast
5. Fennel seed
I like fenugreek and brewers yeast the best.
These natural remedies may help increase milk supply, but what if they don’t help?
The ducts in the breast tissue are regulated by estrogen and growth hormone. The actual breast tissue requires progesterone and prolactin. You need a combination of these hormones working together.
If there has been a chronic nutritional deficiency, you may find that the actual structures in the breast tissue are altered enough where the above remedies may not work right away. The ideal situation would be to eat a certain way about two years before becoming pregnant. This way, going into pregnancy, there would be no nutritional deficiencies and less risk of problems with breastfeeding.
What to try if the above natural remedies don’t work:
1. Fix your diet (go low carb)
2. Consume nutrient-dense foods
There could also be either subclinical PCOS going on or a hypothyroid condition. Iodine may help with a hypothyroid condition.
I believe it’s also important to avoid synthetic prenatal vitamins. A food-based prenatal may be more beneficial.
Key nutrients to take while pregnant and breastfeeding:
• Vitamin D
• Cod liver oil
• Trace minerals

Great tips. I would like to add that nothing will help stimulate milk production if milk is not being regularly removed from the breast. Some women think they need to make huge alterations to their diet when they just need to put the baby to the breast or express milk more frequently.

Just know that colostrum on the first day of life IS enough breastmilk, and you're only told otherwise by the formula pushers. Your baby's tummy can only handle the quantity of colostrum the size of a blueberry. Colostrum IS breastmilk, and it is enough! You are making enough, and only allow a truly competent person with your best interests in mind tell you otherwise.

I was so desperate to breastfeed that I took all the supplements, changed my diet and ultimately took a medication (domperidone) that damaged my heart and almost killed me! Contrary to the opinion of my doctor, midwife, doula and lactation consultant who constantly blamed me.....my body could only make a tiny (1 ounce max) of milk daily! Turns out that my body never developed milk glands. It’s a confirm called (IGT) insufficient glandular tissue. I also have breast hypoplasia! This culture of shaming moms who can’t breastfeed must stop! This condition happens more than you know and doctors have no clue. I’m so sick of it. My kids drank formula and they are now 7 & 8 years old and very healthy.

HammyMamma i starved my newborn son without knowing because of them, he was shrinking in front of my eyes everyday and all i hear is every mum can produce enough milk. Some babies die starved because of them, really. Newborn babies need nourishment, and they only drink milk so if you don’t have enough of it give them formula and don’t starve your baby because a stupid person thinks everybody can produce milk. I wish I would have known this years ago. I tried breastfeeding my first son back in 1980. I only lasted 2 months. By the time I gave up, my son had stopped gaining weight, even though I was nursing on demand hourly round the clock. Plus, I was a wreck from lack of sleep. I switched to the best formula I could find. Then with my second son, I didn't try nursing at all. Like I said, I wish I would have known about this back then. I did the best I could with the knowledge I had at the time - and nobody to help me.

My last baby was medically kidnapped and was subjected to formula in the NICU for 2 weeks. My milk did not come in until I got her home. In the meantime, I kept my breasts stimulated with a pump and took supplements such as Mother’s Milk Lactation chews and tea along with Blessed Thistle in liquid form. It took me 2 months to get my baby’s gut back to normal by breastfeeding and giving her probiotics in her bottles. She’s over 2 years old now and has not been sick once.

Dr Berg, Please add that low milk supply is also the result of not enough milk removal. The perfect diet and diet changes can't make up for that. For example, if mother is exclusively pumping 3 or 4 times in 24 hours instead of the recommended 8-10 times (the minimum a baby nurses) the body isn't going to replace milk that wasn't removed. Demand drives supply. Also, an ineffective breast pump or a baby that is not nursing well may result in low supply. Fenugreek may be associated with gastric upset. It is important to know the possible side effects and contraindications when taking any herb for enhancing lactation. This is a helpful video but low supply is often multifaceted and complex. Excellent point. I understand there is a 24 hour lag time between when the baby demands more milk and when the milk is actually available. Increase demand to increase the milk.

Exactly! And that's not even touching on lip or tongue ties that make the baby inefficient at removing breastmilk or mothers who think they have a low supply because of various reasons but don't.

I’m currently 6 months into exclusive pumping and couldn’t agree with this more. I was determined not to give up and only after months of pumping around the clock, figuring out correct flange size, making sure I was EMPTY after every pump session, and getting the right pump for me was I able to start a freezer stash of milk. I haven’t had to supplement with formula yet, but it was constant research and advice from women like this lactation consultant. I will say that high protein low carb did improve my supply also, but nothing compares to proficient milk removal.

Wish I had seen this 3 1/2 years ago! I barely produced for my son and dried up at 8 weeks. I have celiac disease and I think the chronic malnutrition from the past contributed. I started the fenugreek late and it looked like it was helping, then my body just stopped producing. It was difficult, but once I went to formula totally, it helped my son’s tummy issues (he’s lactose intolerant) and colic.

A postpartum recovery girdle is a great start! I've also seen lots of videos advertised on Pinterest and KZbin on different exercises they did for this issue. My friend and her son both had it, which I never thought was possible. She wore a wrap within hours after giving birth, after her first shower, of course. The hospital will tell you only c section mums should wear it, but that simply isn't true. Many women have worn it and looked the same as they did before pregnancy within months or even weeks! No one's body is the same, you know your body. You will know of it's working for you or not. There is absolutely a ton of information out there, I've never looked into it much because I don't have any children myself (I just so happen to have lots of mom friends).

If you eat high carb high sugar foods when pregnant, the baby gets used to high sugar high calorie intake. Then what happens? When born, the baby wants more calories than your first days of milk production. Baby cries and you think your milk is not enough... Better to eat low carb when pregnant so the baby can be satisfied with colostrum

Thank you so much for touching on this subject. Very interesting and informative video. I have a 2 months old baby (got pregnant naturally at 41) and have been trying to increase my milk supply since I have birth. I have been on a low carb/ketogenic diet since about 6 months before I got pregnant. I Before this, I did eat carbs, but no refined carbs, no gluten, no breads, no pasta, no soy, etc. During my pregnancy, I ate a bit more carbs, but just a bit, mainly to expose my baby to other foods. I stayed strictly low carb though. Entire pregnancy was great, no issues, and I gave birth to a healthy baby, naturally and full term. So really the only problem I have had so far is with milk supply. I simply did not have enough after I gave birth and although the situation has improved a lot, I still need to supplement a bit less than half with formula. To help this, I have been drinking organic alcohol-free beer and eating a cup of oats every day and one banana .... the rest has been very nutritious foods (4 eggs a day, liver, fish, milk, nuts and seeds, some fruit but not a lot, some veggies). I am also supplementing with raw vitamins (have not taken synthetic prenatals) and algae. Drinking fenugreek tea ... what else can I do? I really do not like including more carbs in my diet, but it seems and I am told unless I do so, milk supply will be less .... Thanks in advance for any feedback! I really appreciate it!

Taking lots of sea kelp (i.e., for the iodine), as well. Taking strong probiotics as well. Continuing with the full dose of my raw prenatal as well. Taking additional raw food B vitamins and zink ...... and also taking schuessler salts every day (trace minerals). Have been doing this, together with nourishing myself with real foods, throughout my pregnancy and also while breastfeeding. Despite all this, every time I cut the oats, the beer, the banana, etc., I do no notice a reduction and need to supplement a bit more with formula. Nadejda Loumbeva Hi sounds like you are doing everything and a great job at that! I would add back breakfast, drink lots of water each time you are breastfeeding, also increase in your healthy fats per meal perhaps, avocado. I liked to have full fat cream with cacao powder for some reason. But yes add in the oats if you think it helps. I noticed keto connect added some carbs early on, if you watch their KZbin. You could increase the dha. Also I feel like there is always worry that the baby is not getting enough milk and an encouragement from the drs to give formula.I would say just stick to breastfeeding if you can hack it as formula messes with supply. Know that the baby will want to feed a lot more than if they were having formula. Tell yourself the baby is getting enough milk and will naturally want to feed often. Lastly try expressing/pumping on the other breast while feeding this supposed to help increase supply. Or offer the baby both breasts to feed from. You could freeze the expressed milk and use to top up in a few weeks at night perhaps. I’ve got 3 children and each experience was different.

This is all great info! I would also like to add though, that most moms are absolutely producing enough milk for their babies. Things like pumping schedules, going back and forth from bottle to formula, etc, are going to tell your body to produce less. Also, our culture shames moms into thinking they aren't making enough. I'm a birth dollar, I see it all the time. You most liking are making enough. Stay healthy, eat and sleep well

I feel like I should share my story a little here. I was low carb most pregnancy then relaxed near the end with that. I tried to go low carb again after having the baby and by 6 months my supply dropped a lot. I know this is my fault because getting enough electrolytes/fluids and calories became a full time job with the workouts I was doing. I think if I wouldn’t have started lifting weights I could have kept my supply up on low carb just fine but the demand for nutrition and fluids just skyrocketed and became a full time job. Not even the supplements could help me fully. I did this with last two pregnancies to see if there was something I could tweak while working out on low carb and breastfeeding. NOPE! I will be retrying with my fourth and won’t be focusing so much of trying to workout as much and maybe allow 150g carbs rather than keeping it so in check. With my first baby I went 14 months no issues and I was simply on a Mediterranean/protein based meal schedule. Idk I’m rambling now but just thought I would share. All three times i was nutrient dense whole foods but the times i struggled were when exercise was highest and carbs were lowest. I hope this helps someone in some way. Dr B. When you say low carb what does that mean exactly in calories from carbs?

SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP!!! Every person that does not make enough milk is very likely to be not getting enough sleep!!! You may need an extra hour and a half over the regular 8 hours a night... but longer start to finish because you will be up in the night with baby.

Some mum's don't realise that milk wont come out because the breasts are so engorged with milk that the holes the milk comes out of are swollen closed. A bit like trying to suck on a fully blown balloon. Hospitals don't help. I heard every excuse when my daughter was born. "You're holding the baby wrong" "You need nipple shields" "You're not drinking enough." First time I fed her she sucked so hard the skin was lifted from my nipples and formed scabs. It's a truly toe-curling experience. Ten days of absolute agony at every feeding time, till a lovely health visitor told me to buy chamomile nipple ointment. She called it magic cream and it really was magic. It took the pain away immediately, my breasts relaxed and milk started to pour out by itself. I had no problems after that, no pain either, and for the next four years. The problem then was how to get my daughter to stop.

I am a huge advocate of keto, I have PCOS and Hashimoto's and I was able to get pregnant while on keto. However, keto made my milk supply dry out while things like oatmeal helped my supply. Any idea why? I completely used up my freezer stash while breastfeeding on keto. I was meeting my daily alories and drinking enough water.

I recently delivered a baby girl via c section ( my second one) . I have hypothyroidism and was on 125 thyronorm and after delivery the doctor changed it to 100 . The problem is I feel I don't have enough supply as my baby never feels satisfied .hungry all the time. With my previous delivery which was also a c section , I had the same problem and my baby started losing weight so we had to switch to formula ..I tried the natural lactation supplements- nothing worked . Can you please suggest what could be the problem ... Is it the supply problem or the latching problem ?

In Islam if a woman breastfed a baby for at least 5 times till he/she’s full. Then she is considered to be his mother. And if she has sons or daughters then they are his/ her brothers/ sisters, and can’t marry from them like his biological siblings. I believe it as faith, but really i wish to know the characteristics of breastmilk that can make strange babies become brothers and sisters.
